^ ^ Gary Neville says ‘only one team’ can deny Arsenal the Premier League title

Gary Neville has ruled Manchester City out of the title race and believes Liverpool are the ‘only’ team capable of denying Arsenal the Premier League trophy.

Arsenal’s serene progress in the Premier League this season continued on Saturday as Mikel Arteta’s side beat Burnley 2-0

First-half goals from Viktor Gyokeres and Declan Rice earned the Gunners their ninth successive win in all competitions, while a remarkably tight defence kept a seventh clean sheet in a row.

Arsenal are the short favourites to win their first Premier League title since 2004 and Neville fully expects the trophy to be heading to the Emirates Stadium.

Neville is in fact ‘confident’ that Arteta will finally get his hands on the trophy and has questioned where Arsenal’s biggest challenge will come from.

The ex-Manchester United and England defender doubts Manchester City will mount a title charge despite ‘genius’ Pep Guardiola at the helm and says the ‘only’ real challenge could come from Liverpool.

Arne Slot was bidding to retain the trophy this season but oversaw four successive league defeats before Saturday’s much-needed 2-0 win over Aston Villa.

‘Look, Arsenal can lose the title from here,’ ex-England defender Neville, who won the Premier League eight times at Manchester United, told NBC Sports.

‘I understand why Mikel Arteta, the Arsenal players and even the fans will play down the idea that they have to win it this season.

‘But they’re the most consistent team and they’ve been building up to this now for three or four seasons.

‘I actually tipped them for the title for the past three seasons and they’ve obviously fallen short. I thought they should have been there last season when Liverpool won it because I thought if Man City dropped off, Arsenal had to be the team to do it.

‘There won’t be many people making excuses for Arsenal this season and that’s not me applying pressure to Arsenal, I just think they’re the best team in the league and they’ve got the right squad.

‘It’s only November so it’s crazy to suggest you should win the league from here – but they should and if you’re not Mikel Arteta or an Arsenal player you can say that quite confidently.

‘The reason I say I’m confident Arsenal will win the league is because you always think about what can stop a team. If Liverpool lost Virgil van Dijk or Mohamed Salah in previous seasons they would be in trouble.

‘But I can’t think of any player Arsenal might lose now and it would mean they would lose the title… even the two centre-backs because of the summer signings.

‘Every position is covered. Bukayo Saka was that player in the past but Noni Madueke came in when he was injured. Everywhere they are properly doubled up with the same level of quality or only a small drop-off.

‘So who’s going to take it off them? Arsenal would have to beat themselves not to win it.

‘I don’t think Man City are going to get back to a level they they’ve been at previously and come back at Arsenal. Pep Guardiola is a genius but he hasn’t got the players or the team playing at the level needed.

‘Liverpool are the only team but they would have to get back on track very quickly.’

^ ^ Mary Earps blasts England boss Sarina Wiegman and Lionesses teammate in explosive new book

Former England star Mary Earps has taken aim at her replacement Hannah Hampton, revealing she told Sarina Wiegman she was rewarding ‘bad behaviour’ by recalling her rival to the Lionesses squad.

Earps announced her shock retirement from international duty just weeks before last summer’s European Championships. Hampton was installed as the new no1 goalkeeper by Wiegman as England won the competition for the second time in a row, beating Spain on penalties with Hampton saving two spot kicks.

Earps had been England’s goalkeeper for their previous triumph at the 2022 Euros, where Hampton was an unused substitute.

In her new autobiography ‘All In’, Earps has lifted the lid of Hampton’s behaviour which she claims the latter ‘frequently risked derailing training sessions and team resources’.

Shortly after that Euros success in October 2022, Hampton was dropped from the England squad. Wiegman at the time refused to disclose the details behind the decision but reports claimed a poor attitude led to her being left out.

‘It affected us all in a domino effect to an extent that was extremely unusual in a successful elite team environment,’ Earps commented in her book, being serialised by The Guardian.

Hampton was recalled to the squad in 2023, setting her on the path to becoming England’s new no1 last summer in a decision Earps questioned.

When Hampton started in a qualifying match against Republic of Ireland in 2024, Earps took her concerns directly to Wiegman, telling the manager: ‘I don’t get it. It’s a qualifier match. And bad behaviour is being rewarded.’

As Hampton began to get more opportunities, Earps felt her relationship with Wiegman was breaking down.

‘This felt unjust. My eyes welled with tears,’ she wrote.

‘It was a choice that went against my core values. The affinity I had for Sarina and this job – one I’d given every last cell of myself to – was being destroyed, the trust and respect evaporating.’

Wiegman’s decision to name Hampton as her first-choice goalkeeper in April 2025 prompted Earps to announce her retirement, accusing her manager of lacking honesty over the situation.

Earps wrote she was left ‘extremely disappointed’ by the decision, telling Wiegman that she ‘could have been more direct and honest’.

Wiegman responded by telling Earps she had only come to the decision recently, insisting she had communicated openly.

‘That sounded like bulls*** to me,’ Earps wrote.

^ ^ Is Burnley vs Arsenal on TV today? Predicted starting XI and team news

Arsenal v Crystal Palace - Premier League
Rice is fit again after coming off last weekend (Picture: Getty Images)

Arsenal are in action away to Burnley this afternoon as they look to maintain their lead at the summit of the Premier League.

Martin Odegaard remains sidelined as a result of the knee injury he suffered against West Ham United earlier this month.

Noni Madueke is also still unavailable as a result of the knee injury he picked up against Manchester City in September with Kai Havertz not featuring since the opening day of the season.

While the trio are not in contention today, they are likely to be available for the north London derby against Tottenham on 23 November.

Declan Rice and Riccardo Calafiori both came off in the win over Crystal Palace last Sunday but both were back in the squad on Wednesday night in the Carabao Cup victory over Brighton.

Saliba a doubt this afternoon (Picture: Getty Images)

William Saliba and Gabriel Martinelli were also casualties last weekend, missing the midweek game as a result of those unspecified knocks.

Saliba was still being assessed this week with Arteta confirming on Friday he is still a doubt.

Martinelli meanwhile has been ruled out.

Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus also remain unavailable.

The Gunners sit four points clear at the top of table, leading Bournemouth with Tottenham and Sunderland a further point behind.

With Liverpool’s woes worsening, title talk in north London is heating up with Mikel Arteta’s side looking formidable despite a string of injury problems in the opening months of the season.

Arsenal XI to face Burnley – Metro prediction

Arteta was able to rest almost his entire starting XI midweek against Brighton with Eberechi Eze the only player to start who you’d expect to be in the team again on Saturday.

Saliba’s availability is likely to be the biggest decision facing the Arsenal boss – if he is passed fit he could opt for the same XI that secured that hard-fought win over Palace last weekend.
