Marseille head coach Habib Beye has warned Arsenal loanee Ethan Nwaneri that parts of his game still need to be ‘much stronger’.

Nwaneri joined Marseille on loan in the January transfer window and he has scored two goals in nine appearances for the French club.

Marseille face Monaco in Ligue 1 on Sunday and with Mason Greenwood unavailable due to suspension, Nwaneri has been tipped to make his sixth start for the French side.

However, Beye believes the 19-year-old still needs to improve defensively.

‘Ethan has great qualities, he’s a great talent who needs to adapt to the intensity of Ligue 1,’ Beye said.

‘We saw that when he came on against Lille, he scored but when we analyse his performance overall there are still aspects of his game that need to be much stronger in terms of counter-pressing, his defensive efforts to win the ball back.

‘He seems like the ideal replacement in Mason’s absence but we also have the opportunity to change our system and our playmaking, so we have several choices and choice with quality players.

‘Ethan is a young player who needs to understand, arriving at Marseille, he comes from the Premier League, from a big team in the Premier League but he also arrives in Ligue 1 at a very, very high level club and inevitably the adaptation takes a little time.

‘What’s very good is that he scored for the national team. Sometimes with the national team, you get playing time, and that’s very positive for us.’

^ ^ Ryan Giggs tells Michael Carrick to sign £70m midfielder: ‘He looks a Man Utd player’

Ryan Giggs has urged Manchester United to sign two midfielders this summer (Webby & O’Neill)

Ryan Giggs has urged Michael Carrick to sign Adam Wharton this summer, claiming that the Crystal Palace midfielder already ‘looks like a Manchester United player’.

United are in the market to sign a new central midfielder this summer with Casemiro due to leave Old Trafford at the end of the season.

Giggs believes Wharton, who is valued at £70 million by Palace, should be one of United’s priorities in the summer window but insists his former club should sign two midfielders, with Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest a prime candidate.

‘First of all we’ve got to deal with our players who have gone out on loan, Rashford, Sancho, Hojlund, we’ve got all them to deal with, but the priority is definitely midfield, I can see definitely two,’ Giggs said in an interview with Webby & O’Neill.

‘It looks like Mainoo is going to stay, Casemiro is going to go, Ugarte is going to go, and we need to strengthen midfield without a shadow of a doubt.

‘I always like a left-footer in the team so I wouldn’t argue with Wharton, I think he looks, to me, like a Man United player.

‘Somebody who can handle the ball, passes forward, runs forward, Premier League experience, all of them have got Premier League experience, so I wouldn’t be against that.

‘Anderson I like as well, solid player. Plays every game, I can see a Wharton and Mainoo, an Anderson and Wharton, I can see all of those scenarios, it just depends, British players are a lot of money and what we’re able to spend. But we need two midfielders.’

Giggs has also urged United’s hierarchy to keep Carrick as manager and to not look at alternatives such as Luis Enrique, Julian Nagelsmann or Oliver Glasner.

‘The hardest thing in the world as a manager is to win games and he’s doing that, we’ve lost one game,’ Giggs said.

‘Not only that, just the feeling around the place, we were going to games and watching games not knowing what we were going to get. It’s all changed now, fans are coming to games now or watching TV thinking, ‘right, we’ve got a massive chance here’.

‘We’re looking up now rather than down – can we catch City?

‘The turnaround has been amazing. I think we were all like, well I was, ‘we need seven or eight players’, to now maybe needing three or four in the summer, which is more achievable than seven or eight players.

‘There’s no… I can’t see past Michael at the moment, I just can’t.

‘I think he’s brought a calmness, I think he’ll bring in Man United players because he knows the club.

‘Give him time I think he goes from strength to strength.’

^ ^ Southampton vs Arsenal: FA Cup predicted lineup today and confirmed team news

Mikel Arteta may opt to rest a number of his Arsenal stars against Southampton tonight after a spate of withdrawals during the international break.

Despite Carabao Cup final heartbreak, the Gunners still have a healthy lead at the summit of the Premier League having booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

They are also in the last eight of the FA Cup and can book another trip to Wembley with victory over Saints tonight.

11 members of Arsenal’s squad were either not involved in recent international fixtures or withdrew from their respective squads during the break.

William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes pulled out of the France and Brazil squads shortly after the defeat to Manchester City with Eberechi Eze and Jurrien Timber, who missed the game at Wembley, doing likewise with England and Netherlands. Leandro Trossard also withdrew from Belgium duty.

Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka left the England squad without playing a minute with Martin Zubimendi also returning home earlier than planned from Spain. Piero Hincapie limped off during Ecuador’s draw with Morocco while there was concern for Noni Madueke after he was forced off in England’s drab draw with Uruguay.

Madueke was spotted leaving Wembley later that night wearing a knee brace but speaking on Friday, Arteta eased injury fears over his winger, hopeful he will only be out for a matter of days.

He will not be involved today, along with Eze who could miss up to six weeks of action. Hincapie will also sit out of the action at St Mary’s.

Jurrien Timber and Martin Odegaard are in contention to return but Arteta gave little away regarding the fitness of Saka, Rice, Zubimendi, Saliba and Gabriel.

Arsenal XI to face Southampton – Metro prediction

Arsenal have faced lower league opposition in every previous round of the competition this season with Arteta resting some of his stars at every stage.

Rice and Zubimendi are still to start in the FA Cup this term and could be rested again even if passed fit while Madueke’s absence and doubts over Saka’s fitness could hand Max Dowman a chance to start on the right.

With speculation building over his future, Myles Lewis-Skelly will be hopeful of a spit in the starting XI at left-back.

Southampton vs Arsenal TV channel, live stream and kick-off time

Southampton vs Arsenal kicks off at 8pm tonight (4 April).

You can watch the match live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. It will also be broadcast live on TNT Sports 1 with streaming also available through the HBO Max app.
