^*^ Liverpool v Newcastle United: Premier League – live!

Jurgen Klopp tells BT Sport that the 9-0 result against Bournemouth is not the reason he’s named the same starting XI tonight. “It was more the performance, and it is early in the season, and we need to find rhythm. Now we have to keep it. We had time from Saturday to Wednesday, so there was no need for rotation. Tomorrow Diogo [Jota] will be in training and Darwin [Nunez] will be free again, so it looks better now. We have to create consistency. You never can guarantee a result, but you can guarantee a specific performance if we go into it and throw everything on the pitch with an outstanding attitude.”

If it ain’t broke, etc., and so Liverpool name an unchanged side in the wake of that 9-0 rout of Bournemouth. Darwin Nunez serves the last game of his suspension, while Joel Matip and Curtis Jones return from injury to take up places on the bench.

^ ^ Jose Enrique tells Liverpool to make shock move for Chelsea star Conor Gallagher

Leeds United v Chelsea FC - Premier League

Jose Enrique believes Liverpool should sign Conor Gallagher from Chelsea to solve their midfield crisis.

Liverpool have endured a difficult start to the new season, drawing against Fulham and Crystal Palace before losing at arch-rivals Manchester United, although a record-equalling 9-0 win over Bournemouth has softened the blow somewhat.

One reason for the Reds’ stuttering start is the number of injuries they have suffered, especially in midfield with the likes of Thiago Alcantara, Naby Keita, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain missing games.

As a result, Jurgen Klopp has been forced to rely more heavily on the declining James Milner and the talented but very inexperienced Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho.

Many have suggested that the club therefore need to dip back into the transfer market for a new central midfielder though Klopp has remained coy on whether or not there will be anymore new arrivals.

Dortmund star Jude Bellingham has been heavily touted for a big money move to Anfield next summer, but a more immediate solution may need to be found if the club want to seriously challenge for the Premier League title this season.

Former Liverpool defender Enrique agrees, telling BoyleSports Premier League: ‘Liverpool definitely need a midfielder. Oxlade-Chamberlain, Thiago and Naby Keita are great, but they are always injured, and you need strength in depth.

Liverpool Training Session
Jurgen Klopp has said that Liverpool will ‘try everything until the deadline’ to sign a new midfielder (Photo: Getty)

‘At the moment, they’re really lacking a midfielder and losing Sadio Mane has been a massive loss. ‘I love [Matheus] Nunes, who just signed for Wolves and it’s a mistake that Liverpool didn’t go for him.

‘They’re talking about [Moises] Caicedo from Brighton, but I like Gallagher from Chelsea. He could be going back to Crystal Palace, but I like him a lot, he will be a good player.

‘Next year Liverpool will go for someone like Bellingham but right now there’s not a lot of options. For me, I love Gallagher from Chelsea.

‘If they don’t get the players that they need then it will be tough to see them fighting for the title. If they’re lucky with injuries, they could be there but if they don’t I think it will be tough.’

After an excellent season on loan at Palace, Gallagher has returned to Chelsea to play an active role in their first team, but he has massively struggled in the opening fixtures of the season.

He was especially poor in the 3-0 defeat at Leeds and was sent off against Leicester last Saturday, leading some to speculate that he needs more time to develop with a return to Palace now reportedly on the cards.

Chelsea have opened talks to sign AC Milan forward Rafael Leao and Dynamo Moscow midfielder Arsen Zakharyan but have been told that Neymar won’t be leaving Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

Under new owner Todd Boehly, the Blues have already smashed the British spending record for a single transfer window.

Thomas Tuchel has welcomed the likes of Raheem Sterling, Wesley Fofana and Kalidou Koulibaly to his squad at Stamford Bridge but is keen to bolster his ranks further before the summer window closes on Thursday night.

Chelsea have endured a mixed start to the new season and slipped to a second defeat against Southampton last night.

It was reported on Wednesday that Chelsea were interested in signing Brazilian superstar Neymar but The Times say PSG are now refusing to sell.

As a result, it is claimed that Chelsea have turned their attentions to other targets and are now in talks for AC Milan’s Leao and Dynamo Moscow’s Zakharyan.

Portugal international Leao, 23, impressed in Italy last season and is believed to be keen on a move to the Premier League.

Russian star Zakharyan, meanwhile, scored seven goals and claimed eight assists last season, attracting interest from a number of clubs from across Europe.

Chelsea are also pursuing a deal for Josko Gvardiol with the intention of loaning him back to RB Leipzig for the rest of the 2022-23 season.

The Blues have been linked with a move for Barcelona striker and former Arsenal star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang but the deal is in the balance after he broke his jaw during a terrifying home robbery earlier this week.

French defender Fofana became the latest high-profile player to sign for Chelsea on Wednesday and said: ‘The two last days have been really big for me and I’m very happy.

‘I trained this morning with the team and it’s a dream for me. I’m very excited to start playing games for the fans and the club.

‘I’m here to win trophies – the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, everything. I came here to win and the club is built to win trophies so I’m here to continue that.’

Paul Merson has urged Chelsea to sign Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha on transfer deadline day but says Blues owner Todd Boehly should forget about signing Anthony Gordon from Everton.

Chelsea took their spending for the summer above £200m this week as they completed a £70m move for Leicester City defender Wesley Fofana.

French defender Fofana, England forward Raheem Sterling, Senegal centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly, English midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka and American goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina have all secured moves to Stamford Bridge this summer.

But Chelsea might not be finished in the transfer market just yet as they continue to be linked with late moves for Palace star Zaha and Everton ace Gordon.

The summer transfer window shuts on Thursday and Arsenal legend Merson believes Chelsea should look to secure a stunning deal for Zaha but abandon their interest in Gordon, who Everton value at more than £60m.

‘Wilfried Zaha has been linked with a move to Chelsea and it remains to be seen if he will secure a transfer before the deadline,’ Merson told Sportskeeda.

‘I think a lot of people judged him based on his Manchester United stint and I think that’s a bit unfair. The likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah didn’t quite make the grade at Chelsea, but look at them now!

Chelsea have been linked with a stunning move for Wilfried Zaha

‘Zaha has added goals to his game and will be a really good signing for Chelsea, in my opinion.’

Merson added: ‘I don’t understand these Anthony Gordon links. The kid’s a good player, but the transfer fee mentioned is enormous!

‘If I was in charge of Everton and was offered to take Armando Broja or Conor Gallagher as part of a player-plus-cash deal for Gordon, I’d consider it to be the deal of the century and take it!’

Chelsea’s mixed start to the new season continued on Tuesday night as they suffered a 2-1 defeat at Southampton. Thomas Tuchel’s side face West Ham this weekend.

^ ^ Chelsea’s deal for Wesley Fofana slammed by Graeme Souness

Chelsea have spent huge money to sign Wesley Fofana from Leicester City (Picture: Getty)

Chelsea’s decision to sign Wesley Fofana from Leicester City has been slammed by Graeme Souness.

The 21-year-old centre-back, yet to earn his first cap for France, has signed a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge, the Blues confirmed on Wednesday.

Fofana, who cost an initial £70m, joins Kalidou Koulibaly and Marc Cucurella as defensive reinforcements for boss Thomas Tuchel this summer.

Souness is unimpressed the club’s business, feeling they are spending too much on players with just ‘potential’ and suggested that Chelsea fans should be ‘worried’ over the fact Fofana had to head to America for a medical.

‘We were talking about Raheem Sterling, but I still think they need a centre forward,’ Souness told TalkSPORT when quizzed about Chelsea’s top four chances this term.

‘They signed [left-back] Marc Cucurella. He might be a very good player, but I don’t see that as a priority. You have Ben Chilwell, Marcos Alonso.

‘You have to prioritise where your real need is, and they have not done that.’

Asked about Tuchel’s decision to sign Fofana, Souness added: ‘It’s [just] potential again. You talk about Manchester United spending a 100 million euros on Antony, that’s potential at 22. Fofana is a similar age.

‘It’s slightly worrying he [went] to America for a medical. Something has been flagged up.

‘In this city we are in [London] you are telling me you wouldn’t get the best treatment?’

Fofana joined Leicester in 2020 from Ligue 1 side Saint-Etienne for a £36.5m fee and played 52 games for the Foxes across all competitions, helping them win the 2020-21 FA Cup.

Leicester legend Gary Lineker feels Chelsea are getting a top player, saying: ‘Gutted to lose him but wish Wesley Fofana well.

‘Every player wants to play Champions League football so it’s understandable. Chelsea fans, you’ve got the most prodigiously talented young central defender in the world. Yes, I believe he’s that good.’

^ ^ Paul Merson makes prediction for Arsenal v Aston Villa and Leicester v Manchester United

Paul Merson has predicted Arsenal v Aston Villa and Leicester v Man Utd
Paul Merson has predicted Arsenal v Aston Villa and Leicester v Man Utd (Picture: Sky Sports)

Paul Merson is confident Arsenal will maintain their perfect start to the Premier League season when they face Aston Villa, but expects Manchester United to drop points at Leicester City.

The Gunners are the only team yet to drop a point in the Premier League this term, with Mikel Arteta’s side beating Crystal Palace on the opening weekend and Leicester City, Bournemouth and Fulham since.

Tomorrow night, Arsenal welcome Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa to the Emirates and Merson believes his former club will extend their perfect record with a narrow win.

Pressure is mounting on Villa boss Gerrard, with the Midlands club losing three of their first four games of the season and being booed off on Sunday following a 1-0 home defeat to West Ham.

‘I think Arsenal will win this, but it’ll be a slightly harder game than what they would expect,’ Merson told Sportskeeda.

‘Aston Villa are really struggling at the moment and have Manchester City to come after this one, so Steven Gerrard will definitely be feeling the pressure.

‘There’s a lot going wrong with his team at the moment and he doesn’t know his best XI, which is a worrying sign if you’re a Villa fan.

‘Martin Odegaard is someone who has impressed me at the start of the season. He’s a very good footballer and has got a proper footballing brain – I can’t understand how Real Madrid let a player of his calibre go for as little as €30 million!

‘He’s led by example so far and looks set to be a key player for the Gunners this season. I’m going 2-1 Arsenal.’

On Thursday night, Manchester United will look to make it three wins from three when they travel to the King Power Stadium to face struggling Leicester.

Erik ten Hag’s side endured a miserable start to the campaign but have improved in recent weeks to stun Liverpool and beat Southampton at St Mary’s.

Leicester are currently bottom of the Premier League with one point from a possible 12. Brendon Rodgers’ team lost 2-1 to ten-man Chelsea last time out.

Former Arsenal and England winger Merson added: ‘Manchester United did sort of ride their luck in their 1-0 win against Southampton.

‘They didn’t play particularly well, but you could also argue that Southampton didn’t really come too close to getting even a point.

‘Leicester City will be kicking themselves for not getting at least a point against ten-man Chelsea after Gallagher’s red card, which was a bad result for them.

‘To make matters worse, Wesley Fofana is leaving for Chelsea and the likes of Youri Tielemans and James Maddison could also move before the transfer window slams shut.

Manchester United beat Southampton last time out

‘Brendan Rodgers is a top-class manager, but this could be a long season for Leicester if they lose key players before the transfer deadline.

‘People are getting a little carried away with Manchester United because of their result against Liverpool, but you have to keep in mind that their performance against Southampton wasn’t great. If that game had ended in a draw, no one would have complained!

‘I see goals in this one, so I’m going for a 2-2 draw. Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t start the last two games and Manchester United have won, so I expect him to be on the bench this time around as well.

‘His future is still not sorted and I’d be shocked if he stays at the club beyond the transfer window.’

Sergio Reguilon and Harry Winks are set to leave Tottenham on loan having been cut-off from the first-team squad by Antonio Conte.

The pair were among four players left out of the club’s pre-season tour during the summer having failed to break into Conte’s plans and were informed that they were free to leave North London.

Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele had already left, joining Villarreal and Napoli on loan, and now it is the turn of Reguilon and Winks who are also heading to Spain and Italy.

Reguilon was keen on a return to La Liga just two years after he joined Spurs from Real Madrid, and will now play for their local rivals Atletico Madrid who were keen to acquire a new left-back having just loaned out Renan Lodi to Nottingham Forest.

Winks is joining Serie A side Sampdoria, having only ever played for his boyhood club previously, in an attempt to restart his career with the defensive midfielder starting just nine Premier League games last season.

According to Fabrizio Romano, both players are undergoing medicals on Tuesday ahead of the transfer deadline on Thursday, but neither loan deal will contain a buyout clause.

Meanwhile on Tuesday, Tottenham also officially completed the permanent signing of Cristian Romero for £45million, after the centre-back spent last season on loan from Atalanta.

The Argentine has joined on a five-year-deal and becomes the club’s eighth signing of the summer following Richarlison, Yves Bissouma, Destiny Udogie, Djed Spence, Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster, and Clement Lenglet.

And there may be more to come before the transfer window closes, with Tottenham keen on bringing in a winger should Bryan Gil return to Valencia on loan.

Leeds’ Daniel James and Atletico’s Yannick Carrasco have been linked but Spurs’ interest in the players is not said to be too serious.

^ ^ Alexander Isak ‘turned down Manchester United transfer’ in order to sign for Newcastle

Alexander Isak turned down a move to Manchester United in order to sign for Newcastle, according to reports in Spain.

The Swedish international striker joined the Magpies last week for £58m, signing from La Liga side Real Sociedad where he had spent the past three years of his career.

The 22-year-old, who was on Borussia Dortmund’s books between 2017 and 2019, scored 44 goals in 132 appearances for the Basque club and had attracted interest from a plethora of teams around Europe.

Now, Mundo Deportivo claims that Man United had contacted the forward’s representatives in order to discuss potential personal terms for a transfer, with Erik ten Hag said to have been interested in securing his services.

Despite the proposal being called ‘juicy’, Isak’s agency apparently advised him to turn the Red Devils’ approach down.

Isak has yet to make his debut for his new club due to a delay in the organisation of a work permit, meaning he sat out Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers and may be forced the miss the midweek trip to Anfield to face Liverpool on Wednesday.

Asked about Isak’s prospects of featuring against the Reds, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe was uncertain.

‘I desperately hope so,’ Howe said in his pre-match press conference. ‘We are in the hands of other people. There is no guarantee but it is as close as 75 minutes before kick off so it may go right down to the wire. In training he has looked good although the sessions have been light.’

Howe will be without regular number nine Callum Wilson for the match against Jurgen Klopp’s side, after the former Bournemouth striker was ruled out for a few weeks with a hamstring injury.

^ ^ Callum Hudson-Odoi reveals Chelsea team-mate Kai Havertz encouraged him to join Bayer Leverkusen

Callum Hudson-Odoi says he is ‘delighted’ to join Bayer Leverkusen and has revealed Blues team-mate Kai Havertz encouraged him to make the loan move from Chelsea.

England forward Hudson-Odoi, who has not featured for Chelsea this season, has been loaned to Leverkusen for the rest of the campaign.

The 21-year-old made 15 Premier League appearances last season but has largely struggled since injuring his Achilles in 2019, shortly after he signed a five-year deal at Stamford Bridge.

Hudson-Odoi joins a Bayer Leverkusen side who are third in Germany’s Bundesliga table and will be competing in this season’s Champions League.

‘I’m definitely excited. I think it’s a new experience for me – I haven’t been anywhere else but Chelsea,’ Hudson-Odoi told the club’s website.

‘So coming here, I’m delighted to be here and I can’t wait to get started with the boys, get going and hopefully do well.

‘The project [is attractive]. I said to the family that I want to go out there and make sure that I’m playing football and get the opportunity to play in front of great fans. It’s massive for me to come here.’

After Bayer Leverkusen expressed interest in signing Hudson-Odoi, the player spoke to Chelsea team-mate Havertz, who spent a decade at the German club before his £70m move to west London last summer.

‘He [Havertz] told me it’s amazing, obviously, that everyone around that he’s been with the past years have been amazing for him,’ Hudson-Odoi added.

‘He enjoyed every moment of it and he said you’ll love it over there – just go, do you and be confident and everything will go well.’

Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes has also discussed the club’s move for Hudson-Odoi, saying: ‘We have signed a fast and penetrative winger in Callum Hudson-Odoi.

‘He has everything to be able to help us immediately. Callum has played over 100 games for Chelsea and proven himself in the Premier League as well as in the Champions League.

‘This will give our attacking game another special component. We’re very happy this transfer has gone through.’

Chelsea, who have taken seven points from their first four games of the season, could recall Hudson-Odoi in January.

Jürgen Klopp has labelled Bournemouth's decision to sack Scott Parker as 'harsh' so early in the season. Parker was sacked three days after the team suffered a third consecutive loss, the 9-0 defeat at Liverpool. Parker indicated after the game at Anfield that he felt the club had not spent enough this summer during the transfer window, but club owner, Maxim Demin, said 'it is unconditional that we are aligned in our strategy to run the club sustainably' as he thanked Parker for his time. Klopp called Parker an 'outstanding manager' and labelled the Bournemouth ownership as 'nervous' after a lack of spending following their promotion to the Premier League.

Chelsea v Arsenal - Florida Cup

Arsenal fans must resist going ‘overboard’ about Gabriel Jesus because the likes of Erling Haaland are still better than the Brazilian.

That’s according to Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand, who says Arsenal fans have a tendency of overhyping players.

Jesus has made a brilliant start to life at the Emirates since his £45million arrival from Manchester City earlier in the summer.

The Brazil forward has scored twice during the Gunners’ 100% start to the Premier League season but his performances have been even more impressive, with Jesus looking a sharper version of the player we saw at the Etihad.

Arsenal fans were accused by Richard Keys of ‘overcelebrating’ their 2-1 win against Fulham on Saturday, which has understandably annoyed Gooners.

But Ferdinand says Arsenal fans do have a tendency of ‘going overboard’ and he’s warned them not to do the same with Jesus after his ‘unreal’ start at the club.

‘I think that Jesus’s impact has been unreal,’ Ferdinand said on FIVE.

‘I think that he has been a fantastic signing, an absolute major signing for Arsenal, but please don’t go overboard like all Arsenal fans do.

‘When you have got [Erling] Haaland banging in a hat-trick at the weekend and you are going, ‘Oh, Jesus is overshadowing him still’, what are you talking about?’

Haaland arrived as Jesus’ replacement at the Etihad and the Norwegian superstar has made a sensational start at the club.

The former Dortmund ace has netted six times in five matches for City, including a hat-trick in a 4-2 comeback against Crystal Palace last weekend.

Ajax winger Antony is expected to undergo a medical with the club over the next 48 hours after Manchester United agreed an £85million deal to sign the Brazilian.

The 22-year-old is expected to arrive in the north-west on Monday night before undergoing the first part of his medical in order to sign for the club.

Antony has made no secret of his desire to move to Old Trafford and despite stating that they would not sell the Brazilian, Ajax caved on Sunday by accepting a club record fee for the midfielder.

Given Antony requires a work permit and visa, it’s unlikely that the Brazilian will be registered in time for Thursday’s clash against Leicester.

To do so, Antony’s move would have to be completed before midday on Wednesday in order for the Brazilian to be registered.

But in any case, Ten Hag wants Antony to have at least a couple of training sessions with his new team-mates before making his debut.

Should his transfer be completed by Wednesday, the plan is for Antony to make his debut against Arsenal on Sunday.

Antony is unlikely to start against the Gunners given he hasn’t featured in Ajax’s last two fixtures but he can expect a place on the bench against Mikel Arteta’s side.

Manchester United are in talks with Barcelona over a swap deal involving Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Sergino Dest, according to reports in Spain.

Wan-Bissaka, who joined United in a £45 million deal from Crystal Palace in 2019, has made just one appearance as a substitute in the Premier League this season with Erik ten Hag preferring Diogo Dalot as his first-choice option at right-back.

Meanwhile, Xavi has been keen for Barcelona to strengthen the right side of his defence and had made Cesar Azpilicueta his top target before the Spaniard opted to stay at Chelsea.

Dest is not part of Xavi’s plans and the 21-year-old has not featured in any of Barcelona’s three La Liga matches this season.

According to Sport, Barcelona and United have now advanced negotiations for a straight swap involving Dest and Wan-Bissaka.

The report claims that Ten Hag is ‘favourable’ to the idea of United signing Dest, having already managed the United States international at Ajax.

United have also monitored Memphis Depay’s situation in recent weeks and have considered a move for their former forward.

Barcelona are open to offloading the Netherlands international, who was close to joining Juventus earlier this month, in order to lower their wage bill.

United’s hopes of signing Frenkie de Jong, however, are all but over with the midfielder intent on staying at Barcelona.

Elsewhere, Cristiano Ronaldo’s agent, Jorge Mendes, is still working on trying to get the 37-year-old out of United and remains in talks with Napoli.

^ ^ What is the biggest win in Premier League history?

Liverpool put nine goals past Bournemouth in their second home game of the 2022/23 season to record one of the biggest wins in Premier League history.

This was Liverpool’s biggest victory since Jurgen Klopp took charge in 2015 and it was the first time the club had scored nine goals in a Premier League match.

So, where does this rank amongst the biggest wins in Premier League history?

Let’s find out.

What is the biggest win in the Premier League?

Liverpool’s 9-0 win over Bournemouth was the joint biggest win in Premier League history.

The victory equals Leicester City’s 9-0 hammering of Southampton in October 2019 at St Mary’s stadium.

Lightning struck twice for Southampton in February 2021, when Ralf Hassenhuttel’s men lost 9-0 again, this time against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

And Old Trafford was the scene of another 9-0 drubbing back in March 1995, when five goals from striker Andy Cole saw Manchester United become the first team to score nine goals in the Premier League era.

What is the biggest win in English football history?

The biggest win ever recorded in English football took place in 1887, when Preston North End beat a sorry Hyde FC 26-0 in the first round of the FA Cup.

This is also the record for the most goals scored in an English football match, and it remains the only occasion in which one team has scored over 20 goals in English football.

Nottingham Forest recorded the biggest away win in English football history with a 14-0 victory over Clapton in the 1891 FA Cup.

The biggest winning margin since the turn of the 20th century came when home side Stockport County beat Halifax Town 13-0.

The visitors had done well to keep the score at halftime to just 2-0, but the floodgates well and truly opened in the second half and they conceded a further 11 goals.

This remains the largest winning margin in league football in this country.

Jack Wilshere gave a powerful speech to his Arsenal U18s squad after they thrashed Tottenham U18s for his first win in charge.

The 30-year-old, a cult hero at the Emirates, left Arsenal in 2018 after 17 years but returned in July to become head coach for the U18 side as he looks to one day lead the first team like fellow former player and current boss Mikel Arteta.

Wilshere was a fan favourite in north London – helping the Gunners win back-to-back FA Cups – and picked up numerous individual accolades including being named PFA Young Player of the Year and Arsenal’s Player of the Season.

He was capped 34 times for England and also had spells at West Ham, Bournemouth and Danish club AGF before calling time on his career this summer.

Since taking charge of Arsenal U18s, he has endured a 1-0 defeat to Chelsea, a 1-1 draw with Fulham and now a thumping 4-1 victory over north London rivals Tottenham.

Omari Benjamin, 16, scored a hat-trick in the match and Wilshere sent a passionate message to his players at full-time, which has since gone viral.

‘How does that feel? You deserve it,’ Wilshere told his players. ‘Every single one of you deserve it for your performances this season.

‘We haven’t got the results we want, that’s fine, but we keep building. The way you train, your attitude, remember what I said to you before the game?

‘Look into my eyes. I saw every single one of you look at me and look at each other, and that is a performance which tells me you are together.

‘You’ve all got passion, you’ve all got desire and you want to win. That’s the level boys.

‘There’s some things in the second half we can do better, and we will get better because we keep working every day in training and that is credit to you.

‘But the level of the energy that I asked for, the passion, pride, desire, that’s the standard.

‘We have to get that every week, not just because it’s Tottenham. Every single week and we’ll blow teams away. Alright? Okay?

‘After three, I want you to shout as loud as you can, so they know what it means to us. One, two three… Come on!’
