Inter Milan Giuseppe Marotta has confirmed Manchester United’s plans to sign goalkeeper Andre Onana and expects an official offer from the club in the coming days.

With David de Gea’s future at Old Trafford uncertain, United have stepped up their search for a new no1 in recent weeks.

Brentford shot stopper David Raya and Diogo Costa of Benfica have also been of interest but United are now hoping to sign Onana, who previously worked with Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

Reports have suggested officials from United and Inter met on Friday to discuss the move with Nerazzurri chief Marotta confirming those talks are underway.

‘Manchester United confirmed to us that they are interested in Andre Onana’ Marotta said.

‘We are waiting for an official proposal in the next days, then we will decide how to react right after.’

Inter are understood to be asking for €50million (£42m) for their goalkeeper.

De Gea will become a free agent when his contract expires at midnight tonight. United have been in discussions with the Spaniard over a new contract on vastly reduced terms since the start of the year.

It emerged this week de Gea agreed to that new deal on a reduced salary, only for United to back out of the proposal.

United then submitted a new offer with an even lower salary which has not been signed.

The former Atletico Madrid starlet is getting married this weekend to long-term partner Edurne Garcia with talks set to continue next week.

Meanwhile, reports in Netherlands claim United are also interested in signing Feyenoord goalkeeper Justin Bijlow to come in and compete for the no1 spot with Onana should de Gea leave the club this summer.

Feyenoord are desperate to hold onto their shot stopper and will offer him a new contract to try and fend off interest from United.

Manchester United are interested in signing Feyenoord goalkeeper Justin Bijlow in addition to Inter Milan’s Andre Onana this summer.

There is huge uncertainty surrounding United’s goalkeepers this summer with David de Gea set to become a free agent at midnight tonight when his contract expires.

Talks will continue over extending his stay at Old Trafford while elsewhere, Dean Henderson is hoping to seal a permanent move to Nottingham Forest after last season’s loan spell at the City Ground. United have also blocked Tom Heaton’s proposed move to Luton Town amid the goalkeeper crisis at the club.

United are in talks to sign Onana from Inter Milan in a £42million deal but with Henderson desperate to leave and Heaton being offered first-team football at Luton, additional options are being sought.

Dutch outlet 1908 report their is ‘concrete interest’ from United in 25-year-old Bijlow, who served as Feyenoord’s no1 in their Eredivisie-winning campaign last season.

The report adds that should de Gea leave Manchester, United will seek to bring in both Bijlow and Onana to fight for a spot in goal next season.

Feyenoord are desperate to hold onto their shot stopper and will offer him a new contract to try and fend off interest from United.

A brief statement on the situation from United on Friday read: ‘David De Gea’s contract is due to run out but discussions remain open with the long-serving keeper.’

Reports suggest United have sensationally asked De Gea not to sign for another team even though they are looking for a replacement and could yet perform a U-turn over the Spaniard’s future.

Manchester United have reportedly asked David de Gea not to join another club just yet despite the goalkeeper becoming a free agent at midnight when his contract expires.

The Spaniard, who moved to Old Trafford from Atletico Madrid in 2011, had agreed an extension on greatly reduced terms only for United to withdraw that offer at the eleventh hour.

Manager Erik ten Hag has reservations about continuing with De Gea as his number one keeper, with the 32-year-old making several high-profile errors last season and also lacking the ball-playing skills the Dutch coach requires.

However, United have a limited transfer budget this summer and there are question marks over whether they can afford to sign a new goalkeeper.

Ideally, Ten Hag would like to bring in Inter keeper Andre Onana – with the pair having worked together at Ajax – but he will cost as much as £50million.

There have also been links with Porto shot-stopper Diogo Costa and Brentford’s David Raya, but right now the goalkeeper situation at United is in a state of limbo.

According to The Sun, club officials have sensationally asked De Gea not to sign for another team even though they are looking for a replacement and could yet perform a U-turn over the Spaniard’s future.

If United cannot bring in a new goalkeeper, they are prepared to return with a fresh offer for De Gea – but it will be on an even smaller salary than the reduced terms he had already reluctantly agreed to.

The Daily Mail are reporting that United bosses will hold face-to-face talks with De Gea next week but will have no contact in the coming days as he is marrying his long-term partner Edurne Garcia this weekend.

On Friday evening, United confirmed all the players who were returning to the club from loans, leaving on free transfers or returning to their parent clubs – such as Wout Weghorst and Marcel Sabitzer.

Reference was also made to De Gea, with the statement saying his contract ‘is due to run out but discussions remain open with the long-serving keeper’.

Tom Heaton was not included in the list of players who are leaving Old Trafford this summer, with United having triggered a one-year extension clause in the veteran’s contract due to the chaos surrounding De Gea and the goalkeeper situation.

The 37-year-old had an offer from newly promoted Luton Town and was keen to join but, incredibly, he may end up being United’s No.1 when the season starts if De Gea does not renew and there are no funds to sign a new keeper.

Jose Mourinho is interested in bringing Manchester United midfielder Fred to Roma this summer.

The Brazil international was one of Mourinho’s first signings at Old Trafford after joining the club in a £52million deal from Shakhtar Donetsk.

The 30-year-old has one year left on his contract at Old Trafford and is among the clutch of players who could be sold this summer as United seek to raise additional transfer funds for Erik ten Hag.

The Sun report Mourinho is keen on a reunion with Fred in the Italian capital, having remained a big fan of his from their time together in Manchester.

The Portuguese is said to be keen to inject some energy into his aging midfield, viewing the United star as an ideal addition this summer.

Fulham are also interested in signing Fred, with manager Marco Silva seen pulling the Brazilian aside for a chat outside Old Trafford on the final day of the season.

United have demanded £20million for the Cottagers for the player, a fee Fulham view as prohibitive.

Speaking on his future at the end of the season, Fred said: I have to talk with my family, I still have one year left in my contract here.

‘Now it’s holidays’ time and a good opportunity to rest.

‘I’ll talk to my staff, to the club and see what is everyone’s decision. I do have to talk with Ten Hag as well, he’s the manager and the conversation has to involve everyone.

‘We have to see how next season will plan out. I want to be important, I want to help the team, so we’ll see. But I’ve always been and still am very happy at Manchester United.

‘Of course, I always want to be playing, to be helping my team and gladly I started and I think we played well.’

Scott McTominay is another player who United could cash in on this summer but ten Hag is said to be reluctant to lose both the Scot and Fred in the same summer.

Chelsea sound out Everton star as Brighton demand Declan Rice-sized fee for Moises Caicedo

Chelsea have sounded out alternative midfield options if they cannot secure a deal for Moises Caicedo with Brighton reportedly holding out for a mammoth offer.

The west Londoners are in the middle of a massive clear-out of their bloated squad, with the likes of Kalidou Koulibaly, Edouard Mendy, Mateo Kovacic and Kai Havertz all leaving for sizeable fees.

Chelsea pocketed £65m from Arsenal for the Germany international, while they have also agreed a £60m deal with Manchester United for contract rebel Mason Mount.

That leaves the club with a sizeable transfer kitty but also a dearth of options in midfield, with N’Golo Kante also having left on a free transfer and Ruben Loftus-Cheek set to join AC Milan.

New boss Mauricio Pochettino is keen to bring in a defensive midfielder to partner club-record signing Enzo Fernandez, though an early move for Manuel Ugarte came to nothing after Paris Saint-Germain swooped in.

That has seen Chelsea refocus their attention on Caicedo, who they tried to sign in January but saw two bids rejected by Brighton.

The south-coast club are prepared to let the Ecuador international leave this summer if a suitable offer is made, though their valuation has been impacted by Declan Rice’s imminent £105million move to Arsenal.

According to the Evening Standard, Brighton are asking for £100m for Caicedo as a result of that deal though there is a hope from Chelsea that a fee of around £80m can be agreed.

But if negotiations drag on and Brighton hold firm over their mammoth valuation, the west Londoners are prepared to move on to other targets and have already ‘sounded out’ Everton’s Amadou Onana as well as Southampton teen Romeo Lavia.

Chelsea could face significant competition from Arsenal for the latter, but Onana – who moved to Goodison Park a year ago in a £33m deal – could be a more gettable target.

Previous reports have suggested the Toffees would want to double their money on the Belgium international, who enjoyed a strong campaign despite Everton’s struggles and was particularly impressive in a 1-0 win over Arsenal back in February.

Chelsea also want to add a second, more attacking midfielder to their ranks this summer to cover for the departures of Havertz and Mount.

Celta Vigo’s Gabri Veiga is the player they would ideally like to sign, with the Spaniard having a £34.6m release clause, but again they face significant competition – this time from Manchester City, who are eyeing the 21-year-old after missing out on Rice.

Rio Ferdinand issues warning to Mauricio Pochettino over Chelseas squad

Rio Ferdinand has warned Mauricio Pochettino that Chelsea’s squad ‘lacks balance’ and is ‘crying out for some midfielders’ as he prepares to take over at Stamford Bridge.

Pochettino starts his tenure in west London next week after agreeing to become the club’s sixth permanent manager in five years at the end of last season.

The former Paris Saint-Germain, Tottenham and Southampton boss takes charge of a team that finished just 12th in the Premier League last term, closer to the relegation zone than the Champions League places.

Despite the fact Pochettino is yet to arrive at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea have been busy in the transfer market, unveiling Christopher Nkunku as their latest big-money signing.

Chelsea’s hierarchy have also started trimming a bloated first-team squad, selling Kai Havertz, Mateo Kovacic, N’Golo Kante, Kalidou Koulibaly and Edouard Mendy.

But Ferdinand believes the outgoings have left Chelsea with an unbalanced squad and says the Blues need to bring in some new midfielders to compensate for the departures.

Chelsea have expressed interest in signing Moises Caicedo from Brighton, having admitted defeat in the race to sign Declan Rice, who is set to join Arsenal in a deal worth more than £100m.

Chelsea have agreed to sell Mason Mount to Manchester United

Ex-Manchester United defender Ferdinand told the FIVE YouTube channel: ‘You look at Chelsea’s midfield – Jorginho went last season, Kante and Kovacic have gone, Mount and Loftus-Cheek are on their way out.

‘That’s five midfielders, two or three of them start. There’s no midfield at that club at the moment.

‘They’ve got about eight or nine attacking players in the wide areas but the squad lacks balance, they’re crying out for some midfielders.

‘It’s going to be interesting to see where they go because they need someone alongside Enzo, who they spent £100m on.’

Discussing Chelsea’s transfer strategy over the past 12 months, Ferdinand added: ‘Are these players Chelsea are buying for the future?

‘Because they’ve sold a lot of experience and are bringing in players that look like development players to me.

‘They look like they will need time. They’ve got huge potential but Chelsea need players for now as well.

‘Is it a change in tact in their recruitment? It’s going to be really interesting to see how Chelsea shape up after the transfer window. Chelsea fans might need to be patient.’

Rio Ferdinand reveals the only way David de Gea will stay at Manchester United

Rio Ferdinand has revealed the ‘only way’ David de Gea will stay at Old Trafford and criticised Manchester United for their handling of the goalkeeper.

The Spaniard, who has been at United since 2011, will become a free agent on Saturday as his contract with the club expires.

De Gea has been in talks with Manchester United over a new deal for several months, with Erik ten Hag keen for the 32-year-old to stay for at least one more season.

In a revelation that does not reflect well on the Premier League giants, De Gea reportedly signed a new deal – agreeing to take a significant pay-cut to extend his spell in Manchester – only for the club to then withdraw the offer.

Ferdinand says he is ‘gutted’ by how the situation involving his former team-mate has played out and hopes it is ‘sorted’ one way or another soon.

The Manchester United legend also says the ‘only way’ De Gea will still be at Old Trafford next season is if the club fail in their bid to sign Andre Onana or another goalkeeper they have been linked with this summer.

Speaking on the FIVE YouTube channel, Ferdinand said: ‘It’s a funny situation. Whether you think David de Gea is good enough for Manchester United anymore is up for debate.

Erik ten Hag has a dilemma at Manchester United

‘But he’s been an unreal servant to this football club. He’s been there for 12 years and been Player for the Year multiple times. In the main he’s served the club remarkably well, he’s an outstanding professional.

‘There’s a lot of people calling for him to leave and that’s understandable and fair. I’m just a little bit gutted with how the club have handled this.

‘It comes down to communication. I’m seeing more and more players leave with a sour taste and it’s not right. I don’t think it’s fair on the player.

‘David must be sitting there and thinking, “I never dreamed that I would leave the club in this way, in this manner.” I look at it now and how does David de Gea stay?

‘The only way he stays is if United can’t get Onana or whichever goalkeeper they go for. It would be difficult for him though because he’ll be looking at the club in a different light.

‘It was love before, maybe it’s business now. It’s disappointing and I hope it gets sorted out, for David and the club’s sake.’

De Gea has been a mainstay in Manchester United’s team for more than a decade, making 545 appearances for the Red Devils and winning four Player of the Year awards.

However, if some of the mistakes he made last season are anything to go by, the 32-year-old appears to be past his best and is not a natural ball-playing goalkeeper, something important in the football Ten Hag wants to play.

In Ten Hag’s first season at Old Trafford, Manchester United finished third in the Premier League and lifted their first trophy since 2017.

James Maddison reveals details of first chat with new Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou

Tottenham Hotspur Unveil New Signing James Maddison

James Maddison has revealed how Ange Postecoglou’s promise of a ‘completely different Spurs team’ convinced him to move to Tottenham.

The north Londoners moved quickly to wrap up a £40million deal for the England international this week, with Harry Winks heading in the other direction to Leicester City in a separate £10m deal.

Maddison had interest from Newcastle United and other Premier League clubs but picked a move to Spurs despite the absence of European football on offer.

The 26-year-old has now spoken about the role new manager Postecoglou played in his decision, with the Australian leaving a lasting impression on the midfielder when they spoke.

‘Being a Spurs player now is something I’m very excited about. I feel a hunger about the place,’ Maddison told the club’s official website.

‘You come here and get a feel for the club, for the people.

‘Speaking to the manager is very important. To have a decent chat with him and get his thoughts on how he sees Spurs going this season.

Tottenham Hotspur Unveil New Signing James Maddison
Maddison represents something of a coup for Tottenham (Picture: Getty)

‘He said, “Whether you come or not, you’ll see a completely different Spurs team under me” and it kind of stuck with me that he said that.

‘It made me think that is the self-belief I have in myself.

‘I spoke to Daniel [Levy, the chairman] as well and they both spoke very highly of everything about the club, about me and things like that are so important. Building a good relationship with him, with Daniel, speaking to other players.’

Tottenham have had three successive managers over the past four years who have all played more pragmatic, counter-attacking football in the shape of Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte.

But Postecoglou has an attacking, possession-based philosophy that is far more in tandem with what Tottenham fans want to see – and which they played under managers like Mauricio Pochettino and Harry Redknapp.

Maddison, who Spurs have been interested in for the best part of a decade, will provide a much-needed creative spark, while the north Londoners have already moved quickly to secure a new starting goalkeeper in the form of Empoli’s Guglielmo Vicario.

Patrick Vieira favourite to become manager at Ligue 1 club owned by Chelsea

Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira looks set to become manager of Strasbourg, a Ligue 1 club owned by Chelsea, according to reports.

Vieira has been out of work since getting sacked by Crystal Palace back in March, following a 12 game winless run.

The 47-year-old had been linked with Leeds following their relegation from the Premier League but those rumours have cooled in recent weeks.

Now, it seems the World Cup winner is returning to his native France for his next job, with L’Equipe reporting that Vieira is the ‘favourite’ to take the reins at Strasbourg – who were very recently taken over by Chelsea’s parent company BlueCo.

Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital agreed a deal to buy the Ligue 1 side last week, with the Blues’ owners attempting to set up a multi-club model akin to Manchester City and RB Leipzig.

Boehly had previously spoken about developing ‘pathways for our young superstars to get on to the Chelsea pitch’, with Strasbourg fans quick to criticise the takeover amid fears they could become a feeder club.

BlueCo have moved quickly to attempt to reassure supporters, saying in a statement: ‘It is an honor for us to be part of this historic club.

‘We are committed to preserving the legacy of Racing [Club de Strasbourg] and to working closely with Marc [Keller, club president] and his management team to continue the excellent work they have done.

‘This strategic investment would strengthen our presence in European football, alongside our stake in Chelsea. We believe it would create tremendous opportunities for sharing knowledge and expertise.’

Prior to Palace, Vieira’s previous managerial jobs were at New York City and Nice, and prior to his sacking had been earmarked as a future boss at Arsenal or Manchester City.

As for Boehly and co., they’ve also got their hands busy dealing with a mass exodus of players from Chelsea, with Mason Mount set to be the latest departure after the club agreed to sell him to Manchester United for £55million.

Erik ten Hag blocks Manchester United departure as David de Gea saga changes summer plans

The Dutch coach has endured a frustrating summer window so far (Pictures: Getty)

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has blocked backup goalkeeper Tom Heaton from leaving the club due to the ongoing drama surrounding David de Gea’s future, according to reports.

The Spanish shot-stopper’s current contract with the Red Devils expires at the end of this month, meaning he will officially become a free agent at midnight on Friday.

United had offered De Gea a new contract on greatly reduced terms which he agreed to, but then belatedly withdrew that offer and put forward another proposal on an even smaller salary.

The 32-year-old – who has a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia – is yet to agree to the new terms, leaving the goalkeeper situation at Old Trafford in a state of chaos.

United have been linked with a move for Inter’s Andre Onana to replace De Gea, while Dean Henderson – who spent last season on loan at Nottingham Forest – could also be called upon.

Current number two Heaton had been expected to leave but with the situation still so up in the air, The Telegraph are reporting that Ten Hag has vetoed his exit.

The 37-year-old arrived at Old Trafford in 2021 on a two-year deal with the option of an additional year, though had asked to be allowed to leave so he could join Premier League new boys Luton Town.

Manchester United goalkeeper Tom Heaton
Heaton had hoped United would let him join Luton (Picture: Getty)

But United have now triggered the one-year extension clause and will not allow the veteran keeper to leave until the goalkeeper situation has been resolved.

Heaton is thought to be disappointed by the decision and was keen to take on the No.1 role at Luton, with manager Rob Edwards having identified him as the ideal signing to bring experience and Premier League pedigree to his back-line unit.

According to The Telegraph’s report, with Henderson still recovering from surgery and De Gea potentially leaving, Heaton could start the season as United’s No.1.

Ideally, Ten Hag wants to bring in a new goalkeeper – who has better distribution than De Gea – to be the club’s new starter between the sticks and is keen on a reunion with Onana.

The Cameroonian worked under the United manager at Ajax and is incredibly involved in build-up play, while Inter are prepared to cash in if they receive an offer in the region of £43m.

But there are considerable question marks over United’s transfer budget this summer, in part due to the ongoing saga surrounding the club’s potential sale, and they have endured a frustrating window so far.

They saw three bids rejected for Chelsea contract rebel Mason Mount but have at last agreed a £60m package after reengaging in negotiations, while defensive target Kim Min-jae has elected to join Bayern Munich.

Manchester United finally reach agreement with Chelsea to sign Mason Mount

Manchester United have finally reached an agreement with Chelsea to sign England midfielder Mason Mount.

Erik ten Hag identified Mount as one of his top summer targets several months ago but United have been struggling to strike a deal with Chelsea.

Manchester United had a third bid worth £55m rejected last week and were reportedly looking at other targets as they disagreed with Chelsea’s £70m valuation.

But United have now agreed to pay an initial fee of £55m plus £5m in add-ons for a player who made 195 appearances for Chelsea and has 36 caps for England.

According to The Athletic, Chelsea have given Mount permission to undergo a medical at Old Trafford as they iron out the finer details of the transfer.

Mount was entering the final 12 months of his contract at Stamford Bridge and talks over a new deal stalled earlier in the year.

The 24-year-old, who will sign a five-year deal at Manchester United, was one of a number of Chelsea players to underwhelm last season as the Blues finished just 12th in the Premier League.

Manchester United player Erik ten Hag

Mount has secured a move away from Chelsea just a few days before Mauricio Pochettino takes over at Stamford Bridge as the club’s sixth permanent manager in five years.

N’Golo Kante, Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech, Edouard Mendy and Kalidou Koulibaly have also left Chelsea during the early stages of the summer transfer window.

While some of those departures were to be expected, Chelsea have made a ‘mind-blowing’ mistake by selling Mount to Manchester United, according to Paul Merson.

‘I cannot believe Chelsea are letting Mason Mount go,’ the former Arsenal and England star told Sky Sports last month.

‘We saw it last season with Antonio Rudiger, who was outstanding and one of the best defenders at the club.

‘He asked for more money and they didn’t give him it and then they buy Kalidou Koulibaly for £33m on a four-year contract which works out as more money than what they’d give Rudiger.

‘Now they’re doing it with Mount. He’s one of their own, he hasn’t had a very good season but they’re judging it just on one season.

‘The year before he was Chelsea’s best player. He was one of the first names on the team-sheet for England. Now they’re letting him go. It’s mind-blowing.

New Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino arrives at Stamford Bridge next week

‘They’ll bring someone in who will probably take another year to get used to the league because they will have played abroad.

‘You’re also letting a very good footballer go to Manchester United or Liverpool, who Chelsea are fighting with to get into the top four next season. You couldn’t write it.

‘How can you let him go to a club that could majorly haunt you? United won’t believe their luck if they get him.’

Mount joins a Manchester United side that finished second in the Premier League last season and won the EFL Cup – their first trophy since 2017.
