^ ^ Kai Havertz hails four Arsenal teammates but says Premier League title race talk is ‘too early’

Kai Havertz has hailed four of his Arsenal teammates but says talk over the Premier League title race is ‘too early to say’.

The Gunners went close to landing their first top-flight title since 2004 last term, topping the table for 248 days, but eventually missed out to Manchester City.

Mikel Arteta’s side look among the main contenders again this time around and are top of the league after the opening 13 games of the 2023-24 campaign.

But City are just one point behind them in second while Liverpool and Aston Villa – who sit third and fourth – are two points off Arsenal with no side running away with it just yet.

Quizzed for his thoughts on the Premier League title race, Havertz told Football Daily: ‘It’s really too early to say something about this.

‘Anyone can beat anyone. We really don’t know what’s happening, maybe we will in a couple of months.

‘Right now we are focusing on ourselves and trying to win as many games as possible.’

Arsenal will need their key players to keep performing if they are to win the league and Havertz has heaped praise on four stars in the Gunners’ squad.

Speaking about Declan Rice, who moved to north London this summer in a £105m deal from West Ham, Havertz added: ‘I knew him before [I joined Arsenal in June].

‘We were messaging before we came. He’s a great person, a really good guy and on the pitch as well he is showing what he can do and help the team. He is a very important player for us at the moment.’

Havertz also lauded winger Bukayo Saka, defender William Saliba and forward Gabriel Jesus.

‘I’m so impressed with [Saka],’ Havertz said. ‘I knew he was a top, top player. He has both his feet on the ground.

‘He has so many years in front of him. When you come out of the academy, it is so nice for the fans. I hope he is going to keep his standards very high.

‘[Saliba is the] same as the other two guys. As a defender, he is so, so good. He makes everything so easy and so calm. He is still so young. He’s going to have a big career in front of him.’

Asked about Jesus, Havertz added: ‘He’s the best [striker I have played with]. I see it in every training session. It’s an honour to play with him. You see his quality on the pitch, he is amazing, he is one of those players who can turn a game around by himself.

‘He scores a lot of goals. He is not only a goalscorer, he can link up so well and help with the build-up play. He is so good for the team and helps everyone on the pitch.’

^ ^ Manchester United and Newcastle make approach for Stuttgart striker Serhou Guirassy

Manchester United and Newcastle United have both made an approach to sign Stuttgart striker Serhou Guirassy in the January transfer window, according to reports in France.

The 27-year-old has been in sublime form for Stuttgart this season with 16 goals in 10 appearances so far.

United remain in the market for a new striker to ease the burden on £72 million summer signing Rasmus Hojlund, who is yet to score in nine Premier League appearances this term.

Newcastle, meanwhile, have been hampered by injuries to both Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson at different stages this season.

According to FootMercato, United, Newcastle, Roma and AC Milan have already enquired about the prospect of signing Guirassy in the upcoming transfer window.

The report claims Guirassy would be open to leaving Stuttgart in January, while the striker is available for a modest fee due to the €17.5 million (£15m) release clause in his deal with the Bundesliga club.

Speaking at the weekend, Stuttgart manager Sebastian Hoeness conceded that Guirassy could leave in January.

‘In football you can never exclude anything, so I won’t do that here either.

‘I think he feels really comfortable. Of course, I hope he stays with us for a long time, just has a good time with us.

‘But with him and with the others, it is never possible to exclude things.’

^ ^ Louis Saha compares Kobbie Mainoo to PSG starlet Warren Zaire-Emery and backs Man Utd star to give Gareth Southgate ‘something to think about’

Kobbie Mainoo
Mainoo could force his way into the England team by next summer (Picture: Getty)

Louis Saha is confident Kobbie Mainoo can force his way into the England picture the same way Paris Saint-Germain sensation Warren Zaire-Emery has done with France.

The 18-year-old was handed his first Premier League start against Everton on Sunday, turning in a superb display in midfield to help United ease to a 3-0 win.

Erik ten Hag called upon the academy graduate in the second-half of the Champions League thriller on Wednesday night with Mainoo expected to be back in the side to take on Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Saturday.

The teenager has represented England at youth level but is also eligible to play for Ghana. His impressive early performances for United have even prompted talk of him being a wildcard pick for Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad for next summer.

Former United striker Saha believes Mainoo’s emergence will certainly give the England boss something to think about, comparing the situation to that of PSG star Zaire-Emery, who won his first cap for France this month at the age of 17 after a breakout year for his club.

‘A good comparison is Warren Zaire-Emery from PSG, who is just 17 and has had a run of games and now looks likely to go to the Euros with France,’ Saha told Betting Odds.

‘If Mainoo brings consistency and keeps playing at a high level then he could definitely give Southgate something to think about.’

Mainoo has taken his chance with Casemiro currently sidelined through injury and Sofyan Amrabat’s indifferent form since arriving on loan from Fiorentina.

Saha believes the presence of the two experienced midfielders will be key to Mainoo continuing his impressive start.

‘It was an incredible start for Mainoo, especially considering he has just come back from an injury.

‘He showed confidence, willingness to receive the ball and had great positioning which at a young age is very impressive. It’s a good start, and now he needs to find consistency in his game to reach the top.

‘He will have to lean on the more experienced players like Casemiro and Amrabat, both of which can really help his development.

‘We can see straight away he has so much quality and he will be an incredible asset for Manchester United and Erik ten Hag, because he needs players like Mainoo who are energetic and aggressive.’

^ ^ Jamie Carragher slams Erik ten Hag for ‘terrible’ Casemiro signing

Manchester United v Crystal Palace - Premier League

Erik ten Hag has ‘too much power’ and shouldn’t have been allowed to complete the ‘terrible’ signing of Casemiro.

That’s according to Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher, who says the Brazilian’s move to United was down to the ‘panic’ at the club.

United signed Casemiro in August 2022 for a fee of £60m, with the midfielder signing a four-year deal at the club.

Casemiro’s arrival came after United lost their opening two matches of the season to Brighton and Brentford, and followed a summer-long pursuit of Barcelona ace Frenkie de Jong.

When you look at Man United buying Casemiro – I don’t care how well he did last season – that’s a terrible buy, from a business and club point of view. That’s just a panic,’ Carragher said.

‘£70million on a guy who’s 30, 31 on a five-year deal, on massive money. I think he’s on the way down now… who’s going to sign him

‘I think the managers just have too much power,’ Carragher told CBS.

‘I just think since then [Alex Ferguson’s retirement], top football clubs have top directors of football, people who run the club. And I just think they let the manager get on with it. He buys who he wants.

‘You look at Ten Hag now, basically 60-70 per cent of the players he’s bought – they’re either from the Dutch League, or he’s worked with them before. So you know he’s got an unbelievable amount of power at the club. It hasn’t worked, I think it’s the same with Jose (Mourinho), (Louis) van Gaal, other people.

‘And a manager should have an input into signings,’ he continued. ‘I’m not saying a manager should not know who they’re signing. But a manager shouldn’t be allowed to just go buy who he wants.’

^ ^ Arsenal legend urges Ange Postecoglou not to repeat Arsene Wenger mistake when Tottenham play Manchester City

Tottenham Hotspur v Aston Villa - Premier League
Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham have lost their last three games (Photo: Getty)

Paul Merson has urged Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou to change his tactics for the trip to Manchester City this Sunday.

Spurs head to the Etihad off the back of three consecutive defeats to Chelsea, Wolves and Aston Villa.

In all three games, Spurs took the lead but fell foul of some risky defending as the side stuck to the high-line philosophy that Postecoglou has installed at the club.

This issue was especially notable in the loss to Chelsea, with Nicolas Jackson easily able to break through the lines and score a hat-trick in the dying minutes against the Lilywhites who had been reduced to nine-men at this point.

The high-risk, attacking tactics worked a charm at the start of the season, but the severe injury and suspension crisis has ruled many key stars out and the players who have come into the team aren’t implementing them as well.

‘There’s no way Tottenham can go and play the way they do against Man City. Great managers change things up,’ Arsenal legend Merson wrote in his Sky Sports column.

‘I like Ange, he’s a top manager. He’s come into the Premier League to a big club and said he’s going to play his way, front-foot football – and I have all the respect in the world for him doing that.

Tottenham Hotspur v Aston Villa - Premier League

But when you haven’t got the players, you’ve got to take a step back. When he’s got his full team, 100 per cent play like he’s playing.

‘I remember many years ago I was in the studio when Arsenal went to Old Trafford. Arsene Wenger, never sits back, plays on the front foot. He’d got about seven injuries, played exactly the same way, got beat 8-2. 8-2. That’s not clever.

‘You’ve got to play to your strengths. Sometimes you’ve got to say, ‘you know what, it’s not right to do that this weekend’, and they’ve got to change it up.’

Tottenham Hotspur v Chelsea FC - Premier League
The Man City game will be the last that Cristian Romero misses due to suspension (Photo: Getty)

Among those unavailable against the Citizens are midfielders James Maddison and Rodrigo Bentancur and first-choice centre-back duo Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven.

The recent results have seen Spurs lose their spot at the top of the table and slip to fifth, three points behind second-placed City.

Merson added: ‘Lose this game, that’s four on the trot. For the last four games with those injuries, at least three of them you’ve got to rein it in and think about nicking a point here, a point there, and maybe nick a win on the way too.

‘But trying to win all three of those games… Sometimes you just haven’t got the players. The fans aren’t silly, they’ve seen enough of it over the years at Tottenham.

‘They know he’s trying to entertain, but if you’ve not got Robbie Williams’ voice you’re not selling out Knebworth.

‘Manchester City couldn’t cope with the injuries Tottenham have got. Eight players out, and a lot of those are key players too. If they go to the Etihad and open the game up they’ll ship five, I’ve got no doubt.’

^ ^ Bruno Fernandes responds to criticism of his Manchester United captaincy

Everton FC v Manchester United - Premier League
Bruno Fernandes’ leadership at Manchester United has come in for criticism (Picture: Getty Images)

Bruno Fernandes admits he might not get everything right as Manchester United captain, but has defended his leadership, saying he is always doing what he thinks is best for the team.

The midfielder has come in for criticism from Red Devils legends, with Roy Keane saying he should be stripped of the armband and Gary Neville saying he doesn’t want to be captain at all and should relinquish the responsibility.

There has been something of a morale boost at Old Trafford with three Premier League wins on the spin, most recently a 3-0 victory over Everton on Sunday.

Fernandes showed his leadership skills by handing over a penalty to Marcus Rashford for the struggling striker to slot home and gain some confidence instead of taking it himself.

The 29-year-old has defended how he leads the team on the pitch, admitting he can get things wrong, but he always has Manchester United’s best interest at heart.

‘Obviously you don’t like to be criticised, everyone’s the same, but at the same time I have to do what I think is the best for my team,’ Fernandes told a press conference on Tuesday ahead of a Champions League clash with Galatasaray on Wednesday.

‘Probably I am not always right but in my head at the moment it is the right choice, so I do it.

Everton FC v Manchester United - Premier League

‘My focus is on the team, the staff, everyone who works with me day by day. I think they are pretty happy with me, the way I am is the same since I arrived at the club, it has not changed since being captain.

‘I don’t think it has to change. I am really open with everyone so no one until now has had a problem with me, so I think I should keep it like that, everyone is pretty happy with my leadership.’

The Red Devils go to Turkey this week bottom of Group A but not out of contention to make the knockout stages.

Bayern Munich are already guaranteed to be top of the group, with FC Copenhagen second on four points, Galatasaray third also on four and United a point behind.

^ ^ Bruno Fernandes hails Alejandro Garnacho for his best-ever Manchester United performance in Everton win

Manchester United's Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes celebrate after the match
Bruno Fernandes insists Alejandro Garnacho has plenty of room for improvement (Reuters)

Bruno Fernandes believes Alejandro Garnacho delivered his best-ever performance in Manchester United’s win over Everton and claims the Argentine ‘can be much better than he already is’.

Garnacho scored a contender for goal of the season with a stunning acrobatic effort to open the scoring in United’s 3-0 win over Everton on Sunday.

The 19-year-old has endured a difficult start to the season with several mixed performances on United’s left flank but Fernandes believes the winger has plenty of room for improvement.

When asked about Garnacho ahead of United’s Champions League clash with Galatasaray, Fernandes said: ‘He has that special talent for big moments to be decisive.

‘But I’m more happy for his work off the ball against Everton – it was, for me, the best game he’s had until now, it was amazing.

‘I think when he can put that together with his qualities to score goals and help the team up front, he’s going to be such a good player.

‘He’s already a great player, but I think for his age and for his talent, he can be much better than he is actually already.’

Fernandes also believes United possess plenty of match-winners in the squad alongside Garnacho.

‘I hope he can do it again against Galatasaray. It will be amazing to have another goal like that,’ the midfielder said.

‘But obviously we expect moments like that from Garnacho. He is a special talent that can have these kinds of moments in games that can help us to win games. We have such young players in front that in moments they can change the game to our side.

‘I think we had it in the past, even like most recently with Scott [McTominay] against Brentford at home when, not being a striker, he came in and had that moment inside of the box as a striker, the killer instinct that gives you the win.

‘You know, you need these kind of special things sometimes to win games and Garna has done it many times. Both Antony and Anthony Martial are capable to do it. [Facundo] Pellistri is also capable to do it. Rasmus [Hojlund] also can do it and often us from behind as midfielders and defenders. In some moment, we can have a ball where we can decide the game and we have to take it.’

^ ^ Alejandro Garnacho criticised for copying Cristiano Ronaldo’s celebration after Manchester United wondergoal

Everton FC v Manchester United - Premier League

Alejandro Garnacho should stop ‘copying’ Cristiano Ronaldo and should carve out his ‘own name’ in football.

That’s according to former Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal.

Garnacho scored one of the best strikes in Premier League history on Sunday when his acrobatic overhead kick put United 1-0 up against Everton at Goodison Park.

The goal was reminiscent of Ronaldo’s famous overhead against Juventus in the Champions League in 2018.

Garnacho, who has made no secret of the fact that Ronaldo is his idol, celebrated by copying the Portuguese legend’s iconic celebration.

But Vidal says Garnacho should have celebrated the goal in a ‘different way’ and shouldn’t ‘copy’ Ronaldo.

‘The only bad thing or what I didn’t understand is why he celebrates like Cristiano?’ said Vidal.

‘He has to make his own name. He is an already great player.

‘It’s good that he is his idol, respect for that, but then he has to make his name. How are you going to celebrate a goal and remember it? I don’t know, celebrate it another way. But it was a great goal, it was a great goal.

Garnacho put United on their way to a well-earned 3-0 win at Goodison.

It was a good start to a crucial week for United, which includes trips to Galatasaray and Newcastle United.

Tottenham Hotspur's Heung-Min Son applauds after losing the English Premier League soccer match between Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa

Son Heung-min has issued an apology to Tottenham supporters after their 2-1 defeat at home to Aston Villa on Sunday.

Giovani Lo Celso gave Spurs a deserved lead after 22 minutes but Villa pulled level on the stroke of half time through Pau Torres.

Spurs missed several chances to retake the lead, with Son seeing three goals ruled out for offside during the game, and Ange Postecoglou’s side were made to pay as Ollie Watkins’ goal in the 61st minute sealed the win for Villa.

The defeat is Spurs’ third in a row and Postecoglou’s side now slip to fifth in the Premier League, with Villa moving up to fourth.

‘I’m very sorry to our fans, three games in a row with defeats is obviously not the way we want to approach, but the fans were unbelievable, I think we take a big responsibility to move on for next weekend,’ Son said.

‘As captain I think I can say everyone did everything to win this game and it was tough to break up and still create chances but I think we gave everything.

Son Heung-Min of Tottenham Hotspur

‘I think, especially in this game where you’re 1-0 up, I think we have to control it more.

‘I think we have to respect the opponents and we made a couple of mistakes this season from going up 1-0, we started playing a bit slowly, and then conceding goals, offsides, delaying the game, we lost our tempo a little bit and we’re giving a chance to Villa to come into the game, and then it makes it harder, especially before half time when you concede from a set-piece, I think we have to be stronger than today.

‘I’m happy and I’m very pleased the players gave everything especially in difficult circumstances but it’s tough to take, doesn’t matter how well you’re playing, obviously in the end you’re talking about the result.

‘Creating chances, good, very good, the way we’re playing, I’m very, very pleased an happy, but obviously it hurts when you’re losing games, especially at home.

‘We had such amazing support again and losing the game, it hurts.’

^ ^ Manchester United legends hail Alejandro Garnacho after scoring ‘Goal of the Season’ against Everton

Everton FC v Manchester United - Premier League
Has Alejandro Garnacho scored the goal of the season already? (Photo: Getty)

Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand were among those to quickly declare Alejandro Garnacho’s overhead kick for Manchester United against Everton as the ‘Goal of the Season’.

United took on Everton on Sunday at a raucous Goodison Park, with the home fans in full voice after the club were controversially docked 10 points for breaching the Premier League’s financial rules.

But the crowd were quickly silenced after Garnacho opened the scoring after meeting Diogo Dalot’s cross with a spectacular overhead kick from the edge of the box.

His shot sailed past Jordan Pickford into the top corner, with every player on the pitch in disbelief at the goal, with onlookers quickly comparing it to Wayne Rooney’s legendary bicycle-kick against Manchester City.

‘He can’t believe it, Garnacho. I can’t believe it,’ Neville, on commentary duty for Sky Sports exclaimed.

‘I don’t think I’ve ever been in a stadium to see an overhead kick as good as that – and I was there for Rooney’s in the Manchester derby.

‘That was unbelievable. A magical, magical goal.’

Fellow United legend Ferdinand tweeted his approval: ‘Thanks Garnacho. Goal of the season complete.’

Legendary Olympic sprinter Usain Bolt, a well-known fan of the Red Devils, also tweeted: ‘Goal of the Season’.

‘Pickford absolutely no chance. What a start from Manchester United,’ Everton legend Leon Osman said on BBC Radio 5 Live.

‘Quick as a flash Garnacho spotted it, adjusted his body and it was behind him yet he still rises into the air and as sweetly as you’ve seen one hit connects with it right into the top corner.’

‘Absolutely amazing. We had a great view of it, right behind it,’ former United captain Roy Keane said on Sky Sports.

‘It’s really good movement, it’s a great ball from [Vitcor] Lindelof, a good run from Dalot and when the ball goes in… It’s hard to talk about it, I’ve never done it in my life!

‘But the contact he makes, the skill levels, as soon as it left his foot… I’m usually critical of goalkeepers, but I’ll let him off this time! It’s a brilliant goal, and a brilliant start.’

Ex-Tottenham skipper Michael Dawson added: ‘The ping from Lindelof’s original ball, the strike from Garnacho, I was off my chair. It was absolutely sensational.’

Antony has missed Manchester United’s Premier League clash with Everton due to injury.

United’s squad has been hampered by several injuries with Lisandro Martinez, Jonny Evans, Casemiro, Mason Mount, Christian Eriksen and Tyrell Malacia all ruled out of the trip to Goodison Park.

But Antony has now joined United’s lengthy injury list as he is ruled out of the game against Everton after suffering a knock in training.

Rasmus Hojlund, who is recovering from a hamstring injury, has also failed a late fitness test and has been left out of United’s matchday squad.

On a positive for United, Luke Shaw makes his first Premier League start since August.

Meanwhile, 18-year-old midfielder Kobbie Mainoo makes his second Premier League appearance for United after suffering an ankle injury during pre-season.

When asked about Mainoo’s first start of the campaign, Erik ten Hag told MUTV: ‘His pre-season was short, he dropped out with a really severe injury, but he’s back.

‘It was a long wait but we prepared him well, he played a couple of games in the last weeks so he’s ready to go.’

Speaking on Shaw’s return, Ten Hag said: ‘It’s very good because he has a presence. I think always with a player like him others can build on that, he gives others confidence, it’s very good, it’s helpful.

‘Part of his skillset, playing from the back, defending very strong.’
