^ ^ Alexander Isak injury: ‘Slight groin issue’ hopefully not serious, says Eddie Howe

Aston Villa v Newcastle United - Premier League

Eddie Howe did not sound too concerned about Alexander Isak’s ‘slight groin issue’ after the forward limped out of Newcastle’s win at Aston Villa on Tuesday night.

Two goals from Fabian Schar and an own goal from Alex Moreno put the Magpies 3-0 ahead at Villa Park before a late Ollie Watkins consolation.

It was a fantastic result for Howe and his side, but there was concern over Isak as he was substituted shortly before the half-time break, signalling to the bench that he needed to go off.

Miguel Almiron replaced the Swede and it did not cost Newcastle, but Howe is still waiting to hear the severity of the injury.

The Magpies boss identified it as a ‘slight groin issue’ and while he could not be certain, did not think it was a big problem.

‘We don’t really know. It doesn’t look too serious, looks like a slight groin issue. Fingers crossed we get him back quickly,’ said Howe.

On Isak coming off just before half-time, Howe said: ‘It was a total surprise to me. I didn’t see any incident, he just signalled to me that he had to come off. I was very unsure what had happened, it was out of the blue.

‘I’d like to say it was my decision but it was Alex’s decision [to come off]. He felt he had to come off.

‘We’re hopeful it’s not a serious injury, it doesn’t look too bad but it’s very early to say that. We need a proper diagnosis and then assess from there.’

With the transfer window closing on 1 February, Howe was not about to dive into the market as a result of Isak’s injury, nor is he keen to let anyone go.

Asked of possible departures, he said: ‘I don’t know. I don’t think so at this late stage. I’d be more than happy for the window to shut with no ins and outs.’

^ ^ Frankfurt set asking price for Arsenal and Liverpool target Hugo Larsson

Frankfurt have set a heft asking price of £68million for Arsenal and Liverpool target Hugo Larsson.

The Swede, 19, joined the Bundesliga club in an £8m deal from Malmo in 2023.

But his stock has risen significantly during his first season in Germany, with a host of clubs scouting the midfielder.

Larsson already has four caps for his country, and the fee Frankfurt paid Malmo is a club record for a player sold by the club.

The midfielder was bought as one for the future but even Frankfurt have been surprised by his adaptation this term, with Larsson now considered a first-teamer.

And that’s alerted the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool, who have been impressed with Larsson’s progress.

BILD say Frankfurt would reluctantly let Larsson leave this summer, but they’d require a fee of around £68m.

That would be excessive for a player that cost just £8m in 2023 but Larsson’s value is only expected to increase in the coming years.

^ ^ Jurgen Klopp provides Mohamed Salah injury update as Liverpool face Chelsea and Arsenal

Egypt v Mozambique - TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations

Jurgen Klopp has provided an injury update on Mohamed Salah ahead of Liverpool’s back-to-back games against Chelsea and Arsenal this week.

Salah picked up a hamstring problem on international duty for Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations, which saw him leave the tournament early to focus on recovery.

The 31-year-old has registered 14 goals and eight assists across 20 Premier League games for Liverpool so far this season with Klopp’s side top of the table.

But Klopp has confirmed that Salah is set to miss Wednesday’s home clash against Chelsea as well as the trip to Arsenal on Sunday in what is a blow for Liverpool.

Quizzed about his star player in Tuesday’s press conference, Klopp said: ‘There was no pressure on him [to return] other than wanting to get fit as quickly as possible anyway.

‘We don’t rush. If you could rush the healing process, Thiago wouldn’t be out for 10 months.

‘Mo is not ready. Out for this game, out for the next. It could have been worse but he is not available at the moment.’

Salah could possibly make his return when Liverpool host Burnley on February 10.

His decision to fly back to Anfield for treatment was criticised – with Pharaohs legend Ahmed Hassen accusing Salah of ‘plotting his departure’ from AFCON.

That saw Klopp leap to Salah’s defence, with the Liverpool boss insisting his player is ‘the most loyal Egyptian’ he has ever met.

^ ^ Rio Ferdinand fires warning to Marcus Rashford over his Manchester United future

Wigan Athletic v Manchester United- Emirates FA Cup Third Round
Marcus Rashford returned to training on Monday (Photo by MB Media/Getty Images)

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand says Marcus Rashford has failed to stick to his ‘duty’ at the club and should be ‘leading the team’.

The forward missed United’s FA Cup win against Newport County on Sunday, with the club claiming he was ill.

Rashford missed training on Friday through illness, after the club defended social media videos of him entering a nightclub in Belfast on Wednesday night.

The club were relaxed about the video, as it was before a scheduled day off.

However, further footage emerged of Rashford entering a nightclub on Thursday night – the day before he reported ill for training.

Rashford’s agent arrived at United’s training ground this morning as the forward reported for training.

Ferdinand believes Rashford has failed to realise he’s now a ‘senior’ member of the dressing room and says he needs to be more ‘aware’.

‘Right now Marcus should be the guy that’s leading that team,’ said Ferdinand.

‘There’s a lot of noise around the club. You’re one of the most experienced players now, keep that noise down. That’s your duty.

‘You’re one of the leaders now, like it or not, because of the time you’ve been there. You’ve got to be aware enough that when you’re not doing well enough as a club and as a team, and you’re not hitting the standards that you know you’re about, you’ve got to be aware.’

Rashford signed a new long-term deal in the summer of 2023, following a brilliant campaign for the club.

The forward scored 30 goals in all competitions last term, including one in the final of the Carabao Cup final.

However, he’s netted just four times this term.

^ ^ Roy Hodgson addresses Michael Olise speculation amid Manchester United links

Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson said it would be a ‘sad day for the club’ if Michael Olise departed as speculation surrounding his future continues to mount.

Olise has become one of Palace’s key assets over the last few years since his move from Reading into 2021.

The 22-year-old’s season has been hampered with various niggles and injuries but he has still notched five goals in nine appearances.

Chelsea activated the winger’s £35million release clause in the summer but Olise opted to remain in south east London, penning a new four-year deal at Selhurst Park.

However, interest remains strong from both Chelsea and Manchester United and, while Olise is not expected to leave in the January transfer window, the Frenchman is likely to depart at the end of the season.

When asked about Olise’s potential departure, Palace boss Hodgson said: ‘My thoughts are [it] would be a sad day for the club.

‘I am certain the club would like him to honour [his long-term deal] and to improve the team around players like him.

‘We need to make the team stronger and not lose them to other Premier League clubs who are putting some money on the table.

‘But at the moment that isn’t our concern, it’s these [upcoming] games. I’m certainly counting on him to play his part in that and the summer will have to take care of itself.’

Olise has missed Palace’s last three games after sustaining a hamstring injury before the Year but Hodgson confirmed he is available once again for selection.

‘He’s available – he has trained now,’ the 76-year-old confirmed of the French youngster.

‘Obviously, we have to be careful and the sports science people are urging caution, so we’ll see.

‘He himself feels he’s fine, so I don’t have any concerns myself, but we will have to keep an eye on it because it is quite a long time since he played his last game.’

^ ^ Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta reveals whether he’d manage another Premier League club amid Barcelona links

Everton v Sunderland - Premier League

Mikel Arteta has not ruled out the possibility of managing another Premier League club amid speculation surrounding his Arsenal future.

Arteta’s comments come amid reports linking him with Barcelona following the announcement that manager Xavi will leave the dugout this summer.

It is said that the Spaniard is a top name on Barcelona’s shortlist and that the 41-year-old would be interested in the role.

However, in his pre-match press conference on Monday, Arteta himself rubbished such claims and reaffirmed his commitment to the Gunners whom he has managed since 2019.

But he was also quizzed on whether he would manage a different Premier League club in the future, and interestingly he suggested that could well happen.

‘Today, no. But I don’t know, I played for two big clubs in this country,’ Arteta replied.

‘I’ve moved around in different things, I’m extremely young, and I don’t know, I don’t know what’s going to happen.’

Next Barcelona manager odds:

Mikel Arteta – 4/6

Rafa Marquez – 4/1

Jurgen Klopp – 8/1

Hansi Flick – 10/1

Jose Mourinho – 10/1

Thiago Motta – 12/1

Xabi Alonso – 16/1

Julian Nagelsmann – 20/1

Odds courtesy of Oddschecker

As he points out, Arteta captained both Arsenal and Everton during a playing career that also included spells at Barcelona, PSG, Rangers and Real Sociedad.

He was also assistant manager at Manchester City and had been tipped to succeed Pep Guardiola at the Etihad prior to returning to the Emirates.

His comments contrast that of Jurgen Klopp who has vowed to never manager another English club after announcing his departure from Liverpool at the end of the season.

Asked about Klopp’s impact on the Premier League, Arteta added: ‘I think he’s made this league much better. First of all the person, the character, the charisma, the way of transmitting his ideas and passion for the game is something special.

‘He’s had a big contribution for the growth of this league and I love the way he did it. The emotion that he put in and when you see the human side explaining the reasons behind it and the challenges and everything that is related to our job, I think it was spot on.

‘When someone has done what he’s done for that football club in the league you have to respect that and basically say thank you because I think he made the league better, every manager better and this league much more beautiful and intense.’

^ ^ Bayern Munich respond to Thomas Tuchel exit rumour after shock Barcelona link

Thomas Tuchel of Bayern Munich looks on prior to the friendly match between FC Basel and FC Bayern München at St. Jakob-Park on January 6, 2024

Bayern Munch have dismissed reports linking Thomas Tuchel with the soon-to-be vacant Barcelona job after comments the German made at a fan event.

The Catalonian club will soon begin their search for a new head coach after Xavi announced he intends to step down at the end of the season.

Tuchel sent alarm bells ringing the following day at a Bayern fan club event when he spoke about his desire to move abroad again and his enjoyment of working with Spanish players.

However, Bayern have now shut down the rumours linking Tuchel with a move to Barcelona, claiming his words had been misrepresented.

‘On Sunday, as part of a fan club visit, our head coach Thomas Tuchel was asked by supporters about his coaching career and his previous experiences abroad at Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea, and naturally provided information about this during the discussion,’ the statement read.

‘He also answered general questions from fans about Spain as a footballing country. He never spoke about Xavi Hernández and his successor, as was falsely claimed afterwards.

‘We will no longer accept such unobjective statements directed against our coach, which always come from the same place.’

Elsewhere, reports from Spanish publication Sport claimed that Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was considering leaving Arsenal at the end of the season, with Barcelona a potential destination.

However, the club and Arteta have strongly denied these suggestions, with the Spaniard labelling them as ‘upsetting’ and ‘totally fake’.

‘What I read yesterday I don’t know where it’s coming from. I’m really upset about it,’ he added, speaking at a press conference on Monday.

‘I could not believe it. I don’t know where it’s coming from. I think we have to be very careful when you talk about personal things especially.

‘I’m in the right place.’

Bruno Fernandes was left ‘fuming’ by a ‘greedy’ Manchester United teammate during Saturday’s FA Cup clash against Newport County.

The Red Devils took an early 2-0 lead in their fourth-round clash against the League Two side thanks to goals from Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo.

United could have put the game to bed and gone 3-0 up on 19 minutes but Alejandro Garnacho struck the crossbar.

The Argentine should have passed across goal to either Fernandes or Rasmus Hojlund for a simple tap-in but instead decided to go for glory.

After Garnacho’s effort cannoned off the bar, Fernandes and Hojlund appeared to turn their backs on him in disgust.

Danny Murphy, on commentary duties for the BBC, said: ‘Fernandes is fuming and I think he’s right.

‘If Garnacho squares that then Fernandes has a tap-in and the game is done. It’s a bit greedy.

‘If Garnacho squares it, it’s a goal, 3-0, and it’s game over. 10 minutes later, it’s game on [after Newport scored to make it 2-1].’

Meanwhile, Murphy singled out United defender Luke Shaw for praise in the clash at Rodney Parade.

‘I always think Man Utd look a better side when Shaw is in the team,’ Murphy added. ‘He’s good defensively, calm on the ball and gets forward well. They have missed him.’

^ ^ Replacing Jurgen Klopp will be a monumental task for Liverpool and his huge success may scare off applicants

Jurgen Klopp’s shock announcement that he is leaving Liverpool in the summer will have thrown the club into disarray.

The Anfield owners, the Fenway Sports Group, have apparently known about his decision since November but the news will have come as a bombshell to the players, especially those whose contracts are expiring, as well as to the supporters, and it may make potential targets thinks twice about joining the Merseyside outfit.

There’s absolutely no doubt the German will part company on the very best of terms and will remain beloved by everyone connected to the club.

He’s won everything possible with Liverpool, with the Reds’ first Premier League title in three decades in 2020 arguably eclipsing the Champions League success in Madrid the previous year.

Both those achievements were close to being eclipsed in 2022 when Klopp and the Kop on for the quadruple only for a hectic schedule see Manchester City beat them to the title and Real Madrid send them to a second Champions League defeat under the former Borussia Dortmund manager.

Roberto De Zerbi's odds to succeed Jurgen Klopp have already been cut

It’s fair to say succeeding Klopp has the potential of being a poisoned chalice, think Sir Alex Ferguson leaving Manchester United and Arsene Wenger parting company with Arsenal.

David Moyes at Old Trafford and Unai Emery at the Emirates were placed under tremendous pressure to match the very highest standards and both were soon out of a job even though they have since proved their managerial worth again.

Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso opened as the 8/11 favourite when the news broke on Friday and despite drifting to 5/4 the former Reds midfielder, who claimsLiverpool is his second home, is now no better than 4/5 with Paddy Power and Betfair.

He seems the obvious choice as he is doing a tremendous job in leading his unfashionable club towards a Bundesliga title traditionally dominated by Bayern Munich.

But keep an eye on Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi, who has been touted as the long-term replacement for Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. He’s definitely worth an interest after being cut from 10/1 to no bigger than 7/1 with Ladbrokes.

Definitely avoid putting any cash on Steven Gerrard. He was just 6/1 with William Hill 48 hours ago for some inexplicable reasons but the former Rangers boss, who failed at Aston Villa, is out to 18/1 with the same firm and that still seems shockingly short.

• Jannik Sinner, the new Australian Open champion, has never been further than the quarter-finals of the French Open in 2020, suggesting clay is not his best surface. However, the 22-year-old Italian reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon last summer and is worth an ante-post flutter at 6/1 with Betway to rule this year’s grass-court grand slam.

Aryna Sabalenka, who successfully defended the women’s title in Melbourne, reached the last four at Roland Garros and the All England Club last year before losing a thrilling US Open final to Coco Gauff and looks the best female player on the planet. She’s each-way at 7/1 with Betfred and Betway for the French Open and 9/2 with the latter to win at Wimbledon.

• Wrexham are 10/3 with Betfred and Sky Bet to cause an FA Cup shock by beating Blackburn at Ewood Park.

^ ^ Jack Wilshere picks out Arsenal prospect as ‘great example’ to Under-18s teammates

Arsenal Under-18s head coach Jack Wilshere has hailed Michal Rosiak as an example to his teammates for the dedication he puts in to practicing free-kicks.

The 18-year-old scored his fourth free-kick of the season in a 4-0 win over Leicester for Wilshere’s side on Saturday, while Osman Kamara scored twice and Chido Obi-Martin also netted.

Wilshere had praise for Polish midfielder Rosiak’s work on the training field, which is clearly paying off in matches.

‘He’s a great example to the players because he practices and practices,’ said the former England midfielder.

‘Of course, there are other sides to the game you can practice but he puts in serious dedication to his craft of taking free-kicks.

‘He actually tried a bit of a different technique today but it was unsavable. A great goal.’

Kamara also earned some praise from his manager after his two goals against the Foxes, with Wilshere saying: ‘It’s been tough for him at times this year because teams are doubling up on him and he’s got to find new ways to beat his man.

‘The goals today gave him confidence and I was happy with his performance today.’

Wilshere and his side were under some pressure after a 7-1 thrashing at the hands of Liverpool in the FA Youth Cup last week and he was pleased with their response.

‘We needed to show character after last week. It was tough for the team as it’s probably the first time the players have experienced bad press, and negativity and you need character to overcome it,’ he said.

‘You need to get back to the drawing board, turn up to training and play games even harder. I asked them to show personality by being confident and getting on the ball.

‘There was a lot of personality all over the pitch today so I’m very happy with that.’

^ ^ Crystal Palace star Michael Olise wants to join Man Utd this summer over Chelsea

Crystal Palace star Michael Olise would prefer a move to Manchester United over Chelsea this summer.

Chelsea were interested in signing the Palace winger during the summer transfer window, activating a £35million release clause in his contract.

Olise opted to remain in south east London, however, rejecting their interest and signing a new four-year deal at Selhurst Park.

United are interested in making Olise the first signing of the Sir Jim Ratcliffe era at Old Trafford this summer with his new deal at Palace thought to include another release clause that comes into effect at the end of the season.

The Hammersmith-born winger was on Chelsea’s books as a youngster having also had brief spells at Arsenal and Manchester City before signing for Reading. He left the Royals to join Palace in 2021 where he has developed into one of the league’s best wingers.

While Chelsea hope to bring him back to west London, football.london report Olise would favour a move to United, the club he has supported since he was a teenager.

Olise is said to be aware of interest from both clubs and is widely expected to leave Palace at the end of the season.

The exact figure of Olise’s latest release clause remains unknown but it thought to be significantly more than £35m.

United hope to sign Olise for a price lower than that release fee and could offer Aaron Wan-Bissaka to Palace as part of the deal.

Wan-Bissaka left the Eagles to join United in a £50m deal in 2019 with his future at Old Trafford uncertain.

United have struggled in attack this season, up front and also in wide areas.

19-year-old Alejandro Garnacho has been their only bright spark on the wing with Marcus Rashford enduring a an indifferent season and Antony failing to muster a single goal or assist.

Jadon Sancho’s long-term future looks bleak meanwhile having been sent out on loan to Borussia Dortmund this month.
