^ ^ La Liga president hopes Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood extends stay in Spain

La Liga president Javier Tebas says he hopes to see Mason Greenwood extend his stay in Spain beyond the end of the season.

In January 2022, Manchester United academy product Greenwood, 22, at the time regarded as one of the top young players in European football, was arrested on suspicion of rape, controlling behaviour and assault – charges which were later dropped.

The club decided Greenwood should resume his career elsewhere and the England international subsequently completed a season-long loan switch to Getafe last September.

Despite widespread criticism of the move in Spain and incessant jeers from rival supporters, Greenwood has excelled in the pitch for Getafe, scoring seven goals in 25 appearances in all competitions.

Greenwood’s outstanding performances have reportedly attracted the attention of both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid and it’s understood the forward would be keen to remain in Spain, rather than return to United next season.

It remains to be seen what the immediate future holds for Greenwood, but it appears La Liga chief Tebas would be more than happy for the attacker to stay put and carve out a career for himself in Spain.

‘I am a lawyer, if someone has come out of a legal case innocent, there is nothing to say. He is innocent,’ he said.

‘He is another great player, maybe the circumstances didn’t make it easy for him to come but he is doing really well in Getafe as a player and I hope he continues to be successful and he continues to stay in Spanish football.

Reputation means you should respect the legal decisions and I am a lawyer so I cannot accept any people that concerned him in the press. You have to respect the legal decisions.

‘If Greenwood came off as innocent and wasn’t condemned [convicted], there is no more to talk about. In Spain, we have had other cases.

Tebas added: ‘We can’t be judges for everything, we can’t just say, “You can’t play here”, because we would have empty teams.

‘If somebody has been acquitted, you cannot do anything about it.’

When told that Greenwood’s case didn’t actually go to trial, but that the charges were dropped, Tebas replied: ‘Well, he wasn’t condemned, so I don’t care.’

Getafe president Angel Torres has made no secret of his desire for Greenwood to join the club on a permanent basis in the summer.

‘He is very comfortable in Madrid and he’s crazy about the idea of staying another year,’ he told Spanish radio station COPE.

‘It’s a question for them United, they have to decide if he goes back there.’

On the suggestion that United may not want Greenwood back, Torres replied: ‘No, and there is a market for him in Spain, but it depends on money. It depends on Manchester United.’

^ ^ Liverpool send scouts to watch £60m midfielder in Arsenal clash

Liverpool sent scouts to watch £60m transfer target Alan Varela during Porto’s Champions League win over Arsenal last week, according to reports.

The 22-year-old defensive midfielder has caught the eye since joining Portuguese club Porto in August from Boca Juniors in his native Argentina.

Varela is already on the radar of top clubs and Liverpool are reportedly monitoring his situation ahead of a possible move at the end of the season.

The Argentine has made 28 appearances for Porto to date, with seven of those coming in the Champions League.

He helped Porto win four of their six group games as they finished second behind Barcelona to qualify for the last 16.

Porto have a 1-0 lead over Arsenal from the first leg ahead of their second meeting at the Emirates on March 12 – with a quarter-final spot up for grabs.

Porto captain Pepe has told his teammates they must be ‘perfect’ in the second leg to knock Arsenal out of the Champions League.

‘We got an excellent result,’ Pepe said. ‘In London it will be even harder, so we have to go in even more focused than we did today. We have to be perfect.

‘Galeno’s goal was very important, as we want to qualify for the quarter-finals. We knew it was going to be a tough game.

‘Arsenal have a lot of quality, but we put on a great performance and won with a great goal.’

^ ^ Chris Wilder reveals how Sheffield United duo have reacted to bust-up ahead of Arsenal clash

Vinicius Souza and Jack Robinson come to blows in Sheffield United’s defeat at Wolves

Chris Wilder says Jack Robinson and Vinicius Souza have put their on-field bust-up ‘to bed’ and ‘moved on’ ahead of Sheffield United’s clash with Mikel Arteta’s free-scoring Arsenal.

Rock-bottom Sheffield United ensured they remained rooted to the foot of the Premier League table with a 1-0 defeat away to Wolves last time out, with Pablo Sarabia heading home the only goal of the game in the 30th minute at Molineux.

Tensions were running high after the Blades had conceded their 66th goal of the campaign – far and away the biggest tally in the top flight this season – and tempers boiled over as team-mates Robinson and Vinicius squared up to each other on the edge of their own box.

After a couple of swipes were exchanged, players from both teams managed to intervene before the incident escalated and the duo escaped bookings as referee Darren Bond consulted with the video assistant referee.

In the immediate aftermath of the loss, the Blades’ fourth in their last five games, Wilder argued that the spat was a storm in a teacup, insisting similar bust-ups ‘happen behind closed doors at every level’.

And it appears Robinson and Vinicius have put their scrap behind them, with the club needing to focus their attention on survival as they prepare to play host to third-placed Arsenal at Bramall Lane on Monday night.

‘Listen, I understand it was close and a massive talking point, I get that for media maybe outside Sheffield,’ Wilder told reporters at his pre-match press conference on Thursday.

‘It’s not really much of a talking point for myself involved at the football club.

‘It made me laugh actually because the second story down after that on the Sky Sports website was two NHL ice hockey players absolutely smashing each other to bits! Taking their gloves off and smashing each other to bits for ten minutes.

‘So it wasn’t quite that in terms of intensity but for me it’s not an issue as long as it got put to bed straight away. I can sit here and over my career as a player, career as a manager and career here as Sheffield United manager, there’s been plenty of those situations that have happened.

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder

‘Obviously, there was the spotlight of the Premier League and it’s not a good image. I totally get that and it was too close for comfort, but you know what side I’m going to come out of it… it’s two boys that want to do well.

‘Did it get us going? I’m not sure it got us going because I thought we were alright anyway.

‘But these things happen, it gets put to bed and we move on.’

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta

Despite Sheffield United’s current predicament, Wilder insisted he would much rather be scrapping it out against ‘world-class’ opposition like Arsenal than coasting along in the Championship.

He explained: ‘What would you rather do? Would you rather be playing a Championship game on a Monday night or would you rather be watching Arsenal in front of the world and playing against world-class players and a team that’s absolutely flying, playing in Europe, that have improved year on year and that deservedly in the position they are?

‘I know where I’d rather be and I’m sure the players will have that same attitude.’

Asked whether he believed in ‘free hits’ against the Premier League’s top sides, Wilder replied: ‘No, there’s no free hits. We have to produce a performance that represents ourselves, our football club, that the supporters are proud of.

‘We haven’t had enough of those this season so we need to produce more of those than no. So no free hits for me regardless of the opposition.

‘Of course, the bookies and people in the game will have us down as the whipping boys on Monday night, we understand that, but the game’s not always built like that, results aren’t decided before a game on league position.

‘They go into the game as favourites, I understand that, but we have to show we’re capable of being competitive and get a result out of the game.’

^ ^ Bayer Leverkusen chief ‘optimistic’ Xabi Alonso will snub Liverpool job

Liverpool made contact with Xabi Alonso’s agent this week (Picture: Getty)

Bayer Leverkusen’s sporting director Simon Rolfes is ‘calm’ and ‘optimistic’ that head coach Xabi Alonso will snub jobs at Liverpool and Bayern Munich.

Liverpool made contact with Alonso’s agent on Wednesday and some news sources have even claimed that the Reds have offered him a three-year deal.

Alonso is believed to be Liverpool’s No.1 managerial target to replace Jurgen Klopp, who will leave Anfield at the end of the season.

Bayern Munich have also made Alonso a top target as they seek a successor to Thomas Tuchel for the 2024-25 campaign.

Alonso has links to both Liverpool and Bayern Munich – having played for the two teams before entering the world of management.

The 42-year-old is one of the most sought-after managers in world football having massively impressed at Bayer Leverkusen, who are top of the Bundesliga.

Bayer Leverkusen’s sporting director Rolfes, though, remains hopeful that Alonso will not be tempted by Liverpool or Bayern Munich in the summer.

‘I remain calm and optimistic,’ Rolfes told the Frankfurter Rundschau. ‘The most important thing for managers is that they feel comfortable and have the feeling that they are in the right place.

‘Xabi knows what he has at the club. He has said that many times. This is how he works with his team and his coaching team every day.’

Quizzed directly about Liverpool opening talks with Alonso’s agent, Rolfes added: ‘There are many subjunctives in the world. Not everyone has to enter.’

^ ^ Jude Bellingham remains an injury doubt for Real Madrid’s La Liga clash with Valencia

Real Madrid player Jude Bellingham
Bellingham’s wait to return to action looks set to be extended (Picture: Getty)

Jude Bellingham is reportedly a doubt for Real Madrid’s La Liga game against Valencia on Saturday.

The England international has not played since being withdrawn with an ankle injury during Madrid’s 4-0 win over title rivals Girona on February 10.

According to The Athletic, Bellingham has not yet returned to training alongside the rest of his teammates and has instead been completing physio, gym and swimming pool work as part of his recovery.

As such, the 20 year-old looks unlikely to be included for the tricky-looking trip to the Mestalla, which will see Los Blancos extend their gap at the top of the league summit to nine points with a win.

Madrid are said to have targeted their Champions League Round of 16 second leg tie against Leipzig on March 6 as a possible return for their star midfielder.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men have been without Bellingham for their past three games, with that run of fixtures starting with a narrow 1-0 win over Leipzig in the first leg of their European counter.

The Spanish giants were then held to a 1-1 draw away to Rayo Vallecano, before returning to the Bernabeu to grind out a 1-0 win over Sevilla.

Before rolling his ankle against Girona, Bellingham had netted his 19th and 20th goals of the season in what is turning out to be a dream debut season in Madrid.

A whole host of records have tumbled Bellingham’s way this term, with that brace against the Catalan club seeing him become the highest scoring Real Madrid midfielder in a single La Liga season in the 21st century.

This is not the first time that the former Birmingham City academy graduate has been in the treatment room this season.

Bellingham was forced to sit out the reverse game against Valencia with a shoulder injury, with his teammates coping well in his absence by putting five goals past their opponents.

^ ^ Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea interested in signing young Ajax star

FK Bodo/Glimt v AFC Ajax: Knockout Round Play-offs Second Leg - UEFA Europa Conference League 2023/24

Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea are all reportedly interested in signing Ajax goalkeeper Diant Ramaj this summer.

Ramaj only joined Ajax from Eintracht Frankfurt last summer, signing a contract with the Dutch giants until 2028.

And though the club have endured a very difficult season, the keeper has showed much promise, only conceding 26 goals in 17 league appearances.

These are not bad numbers for a 22-year-old playing for a struggling team, with Ajax, who recently recruited former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson, currently fifth in the Eredivisie.

His performances have caught the eye of several of the Premier League’s biggest teams however, with Sport Bild’s Christian Falk reporting that Arsenal, United and Chelsea are keen.

This is somewhat surprising news given that all three clubs signed new goalkeepers just last summer, in the form of David Raya, Andre Onana and Robert Sanchez.

FC Porto v Arsenal FC: Round of 16 First Leg - UEFA Champions League 2023/24
Arsenal could target Ramaj if Aaron Ramsdale leaves the club (Photo: Getty)

Though the latter two have endured difficult seasons, it seems unlikely that their clubs would already be lining up potential replacements, especially as United paid £47million for Onana, while Dorde Petrovic has looked good while standing in for the injured Sanchez.

It has been suggested that Ramaj could join Arsenal to become Raya’s No.2, with Aaron Ramsdale very likely to leave after being surprisingly ousted from the starting XI.

The German youth international will have a good chance to prove himself against English opposition very soon after Ajax were drawn against Aston Villa in the Europa League Conference last-16.

The first leg of that tie takes place next Thursday, but before then Ramaj’s side face FC Utrecht on Saturday.

Former Manchester United defender John O’Shea has been named the Republic of Ireland’s interim manager.

The 42-year-old will oversee friendlies against Belgium and Switzerland in March.

O’Shea, who won 118 caps for the Republic, had served as Stephen Kenny’s assistant before he departed in November 2023.

The FAI have been seeking to appoint a new manager in the last four months but their search hasn’t come to fruition, leading O’Shea to take charge on a part-time basis.

‘I’ve always had immense pride representing my country, whether that be during my playing career or as part of the coaching staff,’ said O’Shea.

‘It’s great Paddy has agreed to come on board for the two matches and work will begin straight away to prepare for two top-quality fixtures against great opposition in front of our fantastic home support.

‘I’ve got great belief in this group of players.’

The likes of Neil Lennon and Lee Carsley have been linked with the permanent role.

However, the FAI say an appointment won’t be made until April.

The Republic won just six out of 29 competitive matches under Kenny.

Ireland face Belgium at the Aviva stadium on 23rd March, before the Swiss visit Dublin three days later.

^ ^ Gael Clichy tells Chelsea what they’re missing following Carabao Cup final defeat

Ben Chilwell Gael Clichy
Gael Clichy says a lack of leadership is to blame for Chelsea’s struggles (Photo: Getty / Sky Sports)

Chelsea’s lack of leaders on the pitch cost them the Carabao Cup final, according to former Arsenal and Manchester City star Gael Clichy.

Mauricio Pochettino was denied his first trophy in English football on Sunday after Virgil van Dijk’s 118th minute header won the cup for Liverpool.

Chelsea were left to reflect on what might have been at Wembley, as the young Blues side failed to take advantage of a Reds team that were missing many of their best players thanks to injury.

The club are languishing down in 11th in the Premier League, with the FA Cup not only their last chance to lift silverware this season but perhaps also their best hope at qualifying for Europe.

Pochettino’s side have lacked a cutting edge and winning mentality this season, something that Clichy believes is down to a lack of experience and leadership, referencing the impact several of his former teammates had on their respective sides.

The former defender said on Sky Sports: ‘Most importantly, you have different types of leaders in a team. When I look at this Chelsea team… where is your performance leader, your Thierry Henry for instance?

‘Where is you tactical leader, someone like Gareth Barry? Where is your performance in terms of stamina, like James Milner? Where is your Vincent Kompany, your character?

Chelsea v Liverpool - Carabao Cup Final
Chelsea missed several great chances to win the Carabao Cup (Photo: Getty)

‘I don’t see any leaders in this team. Now, that’s not to say that the players aren’t good enough.

‘I’m saying that as a coach, as a club you need to be able to identify certain aspects within a dressing room and when I see this team game after game, I don’t see any leaders.

‘So when you come to a game like this where you’re supposed to be on the front foot and actually get your hands on silverware, do you actually have the experience and the players to do it?

‘I don’t believe they do. They do have great players or good players but they don’t have these leaders that make you win games.’

Chelsea have the youngest average squad in the Premier League (23.4) by some margin, with their most experienced players and serial winner Thiago Silva out of form and currently out injured.

Chelsea continue their FA Cup campaign on Wednesday night against Leeds United, with Pochettino saying in his pre-match press conference: ‘Now we need to keep the spirit up, move on and be ready for tomorrow.

‘Of course it is another competition, the FA Cup, and we also want to go until the end. We need to be ready because we are going to have in front [of us] a very good opponent in Leeds.

‘They have won their last eight games, are in a very good moment and it is going to be very tough. That is why we need to feel confidence and energy.’

^ ^ Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s plan to build ‘Wembley of the north’ at Old Trafford gets council green light

Trafford Council have welcomed Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s plans to build a ‘Wembley of the north’ on the site at Manchester United’s current ground, Old Trafford.

The 71-year-old revealed last week that his ‘preference’ is to completely rebuild Manchester United’s stadium on adjacent land to the current arena.

The club own large swathes of land around the stadium but the Glazer family – the former full owners of the club – haven’t commissioned any work to Old Trafford since their takeover in 2005.

While the possibility of refurbishing the current stadium remains, Ratcliffe says building an entire new stadium would be quicker and more cost-effective. Refurbishment is slated at £1bn, while a rebuild is £2bn, but facilities would be better and work would be completed in five years – approximately half the time.

Ratcliffe and INEOS have already got down to work by drawing up plans with the council to refurbish the Wharfside area around the stadium.

The British billionaire is looking for outside investment to fund the ‘Wembley of the north’, and said a conversation must be had with the government before a decision is made.

But, while Trafford Council back the plans, they say United will have to fund the move themselves.

Ms Patel, who is leading the council’s redevelopment plans, said a ‘Wembley of the North’ proposal “would be wonderful”.

‘That is great ambition from Jim Ratcliffe and these plans match that in terms of the setting and the future of the area,’ said Liz Patel, who is leading the council’s redevelopment plan.

‘How United get together the finances for their own stadium refurbishment would be separate.’

‘We want to create a much more family-friendly space where people want to stay longer and have processional routes so it’s a lot safer for fans arriving on foot from tram stops or walking out from the city centre – as sometimes happens in European matches.’

^ ^ Michael Kayode’s agent confirms Premier League interest amid Arsenal transfer speculation

Fiorentina star Michael Kayode
Arsenal have been heavily linked with Fiorentina wonderkid Michael Kayode (Picture: Getty)

Michael Kayode’s agent has revealed that Premier League clubs have shown strong interest in his client, but insists the defender remains fully committed to Fiorentina for the time being.

The 19-year-old right-back started his youth career with Juventus before making a name for himself in Serie D with Gozzano, playing a vital role as the club sealed promotion into Serie C in the 2020/21 season.

A string of excellent performances in Italy’s fourth tier put Serie A’s elite on red alert and the teenager completed a switch to Fiorentina’s academy in 2021, going on to win the Coppa Italia Primavera and the Supercoppa Italiana Primavera.

Last August, Kavode made the step up to Fiorentina’s first-team and the full-back has since gone from strength to strength under the tutelage of Vincenzo Italiano across an eye-catching debut campaign.

Making 24 appearances in all competitions, with Fiorentina sitting seventh in Serie A, Kayode was rewarded with a new contract in October – tying him to the club until 2028.

Reports emanating from Italy claim Arsenal are admirers of Kayode and the youngster’s extension will have come as a blow to the north London outfit. However, it’s believed the Italy Under-21 international remains firmly on the Gunners’ radar.

Speaking to Radio FirenzeViola, Kayode’s representative, Andrea Ritorni, confirmed Premier League interest but reassured Fiorentina supporters that the teen would not be on the move anytime soon.

‘Fiorentina need not worry,’ Ritorni said.

‘There is a contract that speaks for him: Michael is doing well with this club and in this team.

‘Of course, various Premier teams follow him and have followed him.’

Ritorni stressed that Kayode had not had his head turned and remains focussed on Fiorentina for the foreseeable future.

‘This interest is normal, it’s part of football and life,’ he added.

‘However, Fiorentina have tied him down with a nice contract and many bonuses.

‘Let’s think about doing well now and in the future for the purple shirt.’

^ ^ Former Chelsea star Florent Malouda says Gary Neville’s ‘bottle job’ criticism was ‘not harsh’

Chelsea v Liverpool - Carabao Cup Final
Mauricio Pochettino’s side came in for heavy criticism after the Carabao Cup final (Picture: Getty Images)

Florent Malouda does not believe Gary Neville was being overly harsh by labelling Chelsea ‘bottle jobs’ after their Carabao Cup final defeat to Liverpool on Sunday.

The Blues lost 1-0 after a Virgil van Dijk goal deep into extra-time, a narrow defeat but one they came in for stinging criticism for from Neville.

The Manchester United legend was on commentary for Sky Sports and labelled Mauricio Pochettino’s men ‘blue, billion-pound bottle jobs’ after they wilted and eventually lost in extra-time.

Neville had a problem with how Liverpool were struggling badly with injuries and brought on a string of academy products with almost no top level experience but seemed to strengthen, while Chelsea went from playing well in normal time to crumbling after 90 minutes.

Malouda, who won the Premier League and Champions League with Chelsea, was not ready to defend his old team from the criticism, feeling Neville was well within his rights to make the remarks.

‘When you lose you have to accept criticism, and I don’t think that was a harsh comment,’ Malouda exclusively told Ladbrokes Fanzone.

‘When you listen to Gary Neville talk about Man United, he can be harder on his own team. The difference between the money Chelsea have spent versus the results is unacceptable. I think it is good to understand that criticism comes from high expectations, and it is a good time for Chelsea to get back to the drawing board. What is happening now is simply not enough for a team like Chelsea.’

The Frenchman is not calling for Pochettino to be replaced as manager, though, saying the club needs stability and that there are no great candidates to replace him anyway…other than Jose Mourinho.

‘I am not worried about Pochettino. I am worried about Chelsea,’ said the 43-year-old. ‘In terms of managers, when you look at the options available apart from Mourinho, there is nobody obvious for the job that could make a big difference.

‘I believe in stability, and I believe the club should support the manager and include him more in the process of picking players in the club strategy.

‘I definitely think we need to stick with Pochettino. Instead, we need to bring people on board now who can back him up and help him develop his ideas.’
