^ ^ Graham Potter responds to rumours he spoke with Manchester United over replacing Erik ten Hag

Graham Potter

Graham Potter remained coy when asked whether he had spoken to Manchester United as he made his return to the limelight this evening, 17 months on from his sacking at Chelsea.

The 49-year-old was dismissed just seven months into his tenure at Stamford Bridge and has since been out of a job, instead opting to keep a low profile over the last year-and-a-half.

However, Potter’s future has been the subject of intense speculation in recent months, with the former Brighton head coach heavily linked with a string of high-profile positions, including Manchester United and England.

Potter’s name was high up on United’s shortlist of managerial candidates at the start of the summer, before Old Trafford bosses decided to keep faith with an under-pressure Erik ten Hag.

The likes of Gareth Southgate, Zinedine Zidane, Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel had also been under consideration after Ten Hag led the Red Devils to their worst ever finish in the Premier League last season.

It’s understood United’s new sporting director Dan Ashworth held talks with Potter before he had even been appointed, with the pair remaining close after working together at Brighton.

The topic was raised as Potter joined David Jones and Jamie Carragher in the Sky Sports studio on Monday Night Football for Bournemouth’s clash with Southampton – and Potter decided to keep his cards close to his chest with his response.

Asked whether he had spoken with United, Potter replied: ‘I think what I’ve read so far in the media, a lot of it is untrue and false.

Graham Potter

‘I think I’m the only coach in world football that has been linked with Stoke City and Napoli in the same week!

‘So I take what the media say with a pinch of salt.

‘I’ve had lots of conversations with lots of people and I think for the respects of everybody, it’s best that I keep those private.’

Erik ten Hag

Potter has some sympathy for Ten Hag, though believes the pressure the Dutchman faces is a ‘just the reality of life’ for elite-level managers the English top flight.

Asked whether he felt managing United was the ‘impossible job’, Potter replied: ‘I don’t think anything is impossible but obviously jobs are difficult, that’s just the reality of life in the Premier League.

‘If you’re a big club like Manchester United and you’re not in the top six then there’s always going to be scrutiny.

‘Sometimes you have to look past the results and performances, they’ve missed a lot of chances, maybe they haven’t quite got the points they think they could have got.

‘Sometimes teams go through that. You think can perform your xG but you don’t and then you get a bad day like they did yesterday and all of a sudden the clouds come over pretty quickly and that’s what they have to face.’

Dan Ashworth
Ashworth was appointed as United’s sporting director in early July (Picture: Getty)

Potter is confident United’s new sporting director Ashworth has the perfect experience and character traits to help steer the club back to their former glory.

‘Absolutely. I think Dan is part of a team there as well. I think he will want to support, he will want to help. That’s my experience with Dan,’ he added.

‘I don’t know anything about the context with Manchester United but my experience of Dan from working with him at Brighton was he was very supportive, he would challenge at the right time but help and be there for you.

‘I think football clubs have to create conditions for coaches to be successful as well and that’s what he will try to do as best as he can.’

Bruno Fernandes

Potter has not been surprised by the ’emotional’ reaction to United’s heavy 3-0 defeat to Tottenham at the weekend.

‘The challenge is to try have have some perspective, try to rationalise what has happened and speak logically,’ he continued.

‘After a game everybody is emotional, of course, because football is about emotions, it’s about feelings. Fans are hurting, they want answers, they want to blame somebody.

‘Sometimes it is the manager and sometimes, of course, we make mistakes and we’re not perfect.

‘But it’s part of the job and part of what we sign up for and I’m sure Erik would say the same. It’s what he expects at Manchester United if you don’t win or you don’t play well or you lose. People are going to be critical.

‘I think it was one of those games, whoever lost that game felt they were going to be under pressure. It wasn’t so long back that people were talking about Ange [Postecoglou] having no tactics or no plan B.

‘All of a sudden he’s won four on the trot and now all of a sudden everything is great for him and it’s flipped the other way.

‘You can’t win unless you win. That’s the thing. You need to get enough results to keep you guys [the media] at bay and then you’ve got to work with your players and stick to what you’re doing and take the club forward as best you can.’

^ ^ PSG boss Luis Enrique makes huge claim about Arsenal and explains Ousmane Dembele axing

PSG boss Luis Enrique

Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique has hailed Arsenal as ‘one of the best teams in Europe’ ahead of the sides’ Champions League meeting on Tuesday night.

Arsenal secured their spot in Europe’s premier competition with a second-placed finish in the Premier League last term, with Manchester City beating them to the English title for a second year in succession.

Mikel Arteta will have been eager for a statement performance as Arsenal kicked off their group-stage campaign against Atalanta earlier this month but the north London outfit were held to a goalless draw in Bergamo.

David Raya was Arsenal’s hero that day, keeping the scoreline goalless with a remarkable double save from a penalty in what was a tense affair at the Gewiss Stadium.

Next up for the Gunners is an intriguing clash with Ligue 1 giants PSG, who suffered a painful defeat at the hands of Borussia Dortmund at the semi-final stage last term.

Previewing Tuesday’s contest at his pre-match press conference this afternoon, Enrique had nothing but praise for Arsenal and the job Arteta had done since taking over the reins at the Emirates.

‘I think they are one of the best teams in Europe at the moment,’ the Spaniard told reporters.

‘With the ball they are a team very close to the top European level and without the ball they are also very good.

‘I would even say that they are one of the best teams in the world without the ball.

‘They are a team with a real identity. We are similar but also have different styles of play.’

Enrique and Arteta were team-mates for a short period at Barcelona and the PSG boss is looking forward to catching up his fellow countryman in north London.

‘We were team-mates for a season at Barcelona even though he was young at the time. I have good memories of him as a team-mate,’ Enrique added.

‘He had a great career as a player, he had a very successful end to his career.

‘We haven’t faced off against each other since we’ve both been coaching.

‘Even if it’s only five minutes before the game, I’d like to talk to him and it will be a pleasure to be able to greet him on Tuesday.

‘He’s one of the best coaches on the market right now and he’s helped Arsenal become a club that wins titles again. He’s a great coach and a great person.’

Ousmane Dembele
PSG have dropped Dembele for the group-stage contest (Picture: Getty)

Ousmane Dembele has been axed by Enrique for PSG’s encounter with Arsenal, a decision that caught Arteta by surprise as he faced the media earlier today.

Widespread reports in France claimed Enrique and Dembele were involved in a heated altercation following the side’s 3-1 victory over Rennes last Friday.

‘There are difficult circumstances, difficult decisions,’ Enrique said when asked to elaborate on the situation.

‘I am 100 per cent committed to my decisions, I am 100 per cent sure of my decisions. My decisions are not irreversible.

Leandro Trossard

‘I signed for this club to create a team with an identity, that plays football.

‘Was I hired to win titles and win the Champions League? Certainly not. I was hired to do the best I can.

‘I have the support of the management, the sporting director, the president. I am here to create a team and to do it also with Ousmane Dembele.’

Enrique hopes to avoid the matter becoming a ‘soap opera’ which he fears could become a distraction ahead of such a crucial game.

‘I have nothing to add to what I said before,’ he went on.

‘You already have enough to work with, if you want. I am honest but I do not want to make a soap opera out of this matter.

‘There is no dispute between the two of us, that is totally false.

‘There is a problem of commitment of the player towards the team but not a problem between the player and the coach.’

^ ^ Bruno Fernandes reveals what James Maddison told him after controversial red card

Manchester United FC v Tottenham Hotspur FC - Premier League

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes says he should not have been sent-off against Tottenham on Sunday and he revealed that James Maddison agrees with him.

It was a shocking afternoon for the Red Devils at Old Trafford as they were thrashed 3-0 by Spurs, not helped by a red card for their skipper after just 42 minutes.

The Portuguese slipped before trying to challenge Maddison and in the awkward tackle he caught the Spurs man on the shin.

The referee was very quick to flash a straight red and VAR did not intervene, despite the consensus in the Sky Sports studio being that it should have been a yellow.

Fernandes was shocked that he was punished so heavily and says that even Maddison felt it was very harsh.

‘It’s part of slipping going in, I don’t take him as everyone wants to see it, I don’t go with the studs, I take him with my ankle, it’s a clear foul but never a red card, that’s my feeling,’ Fernandes told Sky Sports.

‘Even Maddison when he gets up, he said it’s a foul but never a red card, that’s what he said.

Manchester United FC v Tottenham Hotspur FC - Premier League

‘In the eyes of everyone you can see it’s never a red card, because if this is a red card I think we have to look at many other incidents, many incidents when I get kicked and I’ve never seen something so quick coming as a red card.

‘I just think it’s never a red card. If he wants to give a yellow because it’s a counter-attack, I agree, then I don’t understand why VAR doesn’t call the referee to the screen. For me it’s just not a really good decision, that’s all.’

Tottenham dominated the game before and after the red card, but Fernandes hailed his teammates for their workrate after he left the field.

‘I want to say I left my teammates one man down, I appreciate everything they did on the pitch. We didn’t start the game well with 11 players and then they did very well,’ he said.

‘It was difficult to cover all of the spaces, there are many good things we can take away from this. I am proud of the team.’

Brennan Johnson, Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke scored the goals for Spurs as they rose to eighth and United sunk to 12th in the Premier League table.

^ ^ Jamie Redknapp and Ashley Young in agreement over Bruno Fernandes red card in Manchester United vs Tottenham clash

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes sent off

Jamie Redknapp and Ashley Young felt referee Chris Kavanagh made a mistake sending Bruno Fernandes off in Manchester United’s woeful 3-0 defeat at the hands of Tottenham.

Brennan Johnson sent Spurs’ away support into raptures after just three minutes at Old Trafford, making no mistake from close range after an incredible 70-yard run from Micky van de Ven through United’s defence.

The visitors squandered a number of opportunities to double their advantage as the first half wore on, perhaps missing their captain Son Heung-min in the final third.

But United’s woes deepened in the 42nd minute as Fernandes was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Spurs attacking midfielder James Maddison.

The video assistant referee checked and confirmed referee Kavanagh’s initial call and the decision was universally panned in the Sky Sports studio during the half-time break.

It was the first time in Fernandes’ 242 appearances for United that the Portugal international had been given his marching orders.

The situation soon went from bad to worse for the Red Devils as goals from Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke put the away team out of sight in the second half.

Asked whether he thought Fernandes’ red card was justified on first viewing, ex-Tottenham midfielder Redknapp replied: ‘No, he slips.

Bruno Fernandes

‘He goes in to try and win the challenge and you can see his feet go under him.

‘It’s petty, it’s a bit petulant. You can see he sticks out his right leg and that angle is quite damning.

‘But when you actually see it in slow motion, his feet go under him and he just sticks out his right leg. I think it’s a yellow card.’

Brennan Johnson

Former United winger Young agreed with Redknapp that Kavanagh had ‘got it wrong’ as it was not a ‘reckless’ challenge from Fernandes.

‘I don’t think it’s serious foul play or it’s reckless,’ Young explained.

‘Okay, he’s out of control but he slips and you can clearly see that he slips.

‘I don’t think he even goes to take out James Maddison either. He hits him with the back of his heel as well.

‘I think the referee has got it wrong there.’

Gary Neville, meanwhile, on co-commentary duty for Sky Sports, said Fernandes’ sending off ‘summed up’ United’s dismal showing in the opening 45 minutes, with Erik ten Hag’s men booed off at the halfway stage.

‘It just sums up Manchester United in this first half and, to be fair, they’ve veen an absolute disgrace,’ an irate Neville said.

‘It’s one of the worst performances I’ve seen in Erik ten Hag’s time at United and that’s saying something.

‘It’s really bad and he will not be able to believe what he’s watching in that first half.

‘I’m not talking about patterns of play here, I’m talking about application towards a football match.’

^ ^ ‘Rubbish’ – Manchester United legend Gary Neville blasts Marcus Rashford after Tottenham stunner

Brennan Johnson scores against Manchester United

Gary Neville took aim at Marcus Rashford after Tottenham’s early opener against Manchester United, blasting the forward’s ‘rubbish’ play prior to the goal.

The Red Devils – looking to get back to winning ways after a disappointing goalless draw at Crystal Palace last time out – went behind just three minutes into this afternoon’s contest and were booed off the field at half-time.

Brennan Johnson got his name on the scoresheet but the goal was all about Micky van de Ven’s scything run in the build-up, with the Dutch centre-back robbing Rashford of possession before bursting through United’s defence with an incredible turn of pace.

After beating fellow countryman Matthijs de Ligt, Van de Ven put the ball on a plate for an unmarked Johnson at the back post and the Welshman made no mistake from close range to break the deadlock.

‘Absolutely brilliant from Van de Ven. One of the best runs I’ve ever seen from a centre-back,’ Neville said on Sky Sports’ commentary of the Premier League clash.

‘Van de Ven just steps in and this is absolutely incredible.

‘He drives through four Manchester United players and the cross, well it’s just wonderful.’

Marcus Rashford

The former United and England right-back blasted Rashford for clumsily giving away possession before criticising De Ligt for his lacklustre defending to allow Van de Ven to get a cross away.

‘I mean Rashford there… he just carries on running, rubbish from him,’ Neville added.

‘There’s enough players back to be able to stop him but he’s unstoppable. De Ligt starts off running too late and he completely misreads the pace of the Spurs centre-back.

‘It’s amazing. Absolutely brilliant and devastating from Van de Ven and Spurs. He [Johnson] is smiling before he puts it in the net.’

United’s afternoon went from bad to worse as club captain Bruno Fernandes was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge on James Maddison in the 42nd minute.

‘It just sums up Manchester United in this first half and, to be fair, they’ve veen an absolute disgrace,’ Neville added.

^ ^ Chelsea co-owner branded a ‘billionaire rascal’ for goal celebration vs Brighton

Behdad Eghbali is pictured putting his finger to his lips after Chelsea scored against Brighton

Chelsea co-owner Behdad Eghbali has gone viral on social media for how he celebrated one of Cole Palmer’s four goals in Saturday’s win over Brighton.

The Iranian–American businessman was seen putting his finger to his lips from the director’s box at Stamford Bridge.

There has been some speculation that Eghbali was shushing the Brighton fans in the away section – but that is very much unconfirmed – and likely to be untrue.

It is much more likely that Eghbali, the face of Clearlake Capital, was simply replicating the way Palmer himself sometimes celebrates his goals.

Nonetheless, Chelsea fans have been loving Eghbali’s celebration, with one Blues supporter, @omoonifade1, affectionally labelling him a ‘billionaire rascal’.

@declanFrancis8 added that it was ‘beautiful to see’ while @pharischege78 said that Eghbali looked ‘like a mafia boss’.

‘I love the owners, have always backed them since day one,’ @richy_robson posted.

‘You can’t doubt the determination with the amount they’ve spent in the market. They’re trying to make us the best team, we should support them.’

Chelsea have enjoyed a strong start to the season under their new head coach Enzo Maresca.

The west Londoners continued that trend on Saturday with their 4-2 win over Brighton on Saturday, a result which puts them fourth in the table on 13 points.

Chelsea are currently just two points behind league leaders Liverpool, although it is still very early in the season with just six games played.

The Blues are next in action on Thursday when they face Belgian side Gent in the Conference League.

Their next top-flight fixture comes on October 6 when they host Nottingham Forest.

^ ^ Leicester City boss says it’s ‘beyond belief’ Arsenal star wasn’t sent off

Leicester City boss Steve Cooper shouts instructions to his team against Arsenal
Steve Cooper was left furious at the referee after Arsenal’s victory (Picture: Getty)

Leicester City manager Steve Cooper says it is ‘beyond belief’ that Arsenal star Riccardo Calafiori wasn’t sent off during their clash on Saturday.

The Foxes thought they had earned a valuable point at the Emirates after levelling it up from 2-0 down only for Arsenal to score twice in injury time to win 4-2.

Cooper was left angry after the match that Calafiori avoided a second yellow card for a foul on his player Facundo Buonanotte.

‘I don’t want to make the headlines around referees, because I’m trying to take responsibility for a team trying to do better in the Premier League, but it’s a clear foul on Jamie Vardy for the first goal and the left-back has to get sent off for a second yellow,’ Cooper said.

‘There’s so much more we could say. The whole game knows, but I’m not going down that road today.

‘We were very disappointed with a foul not being given on Vards for the first goal.

‘And although we don’t come into games trying to get players sent off, why he hasn’t sent off Calafiori is a little bit beyond belief.

‘Because of the spell we’re in and the spell that I’m in personally, I’m trying to not let referees’ decisions be the headline, as I’m trying to take responsibility for a team that needs to get better results. But we feel those were two poor decisions.’

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was quizzed about the incident after the match too and admits he was ‘really worried’ Calafiori was going to get sent off.

‘I haven’t seen the action but I got really worried when that happened because he gave the foul, but I haven’t seen the replay,’ Arteta said.

Meanwhile, the Arsenal boss was also asked about title rivals Manchester City dropping points to Newcastle United in a 1-1 draw earlier in the day.

‘It’s the sixth game in the Premier League,’ Arteta added. We are in September, so we want to win every game and do our best to do that, and that’s it.

‘Let’s go game by game and try to improve every week.’

^ ^ Bookies install new favourites for Premier League title after Man City drop points again

Arsenal are the new favourites to land the 2024-25 Premier League title after Manchester City dropped points at Newcastle United, according to Betfair.

Pep Guardiola’s side, who have narrowly beaten the Gunners to the last two top-flight trophies, were unable to defeat Newcastle on Saturday as they drew 1-1.

Later in the day, Arsenal recorded a 3-2 victory over Leicester City at the Emirates, and the two sets of results mean the Gunners are the new English title favourites.

That’s according to UK bookmakers Betfair, who are now offering 11/8 odds for Arsenal to clinch the Premier League trophy for the first time in 21 years.

‘Arsenal are the new, and clear, favourites to win the Premier League title after a dramatic victory at home to Leicester, just hours after Manchester City dropped points at Newcastle,’ Betfair posted on their website.

‘[Man City’s] game was played 24 hours after Pep Guardiola had confirmed that star midfielder Rodri would be sidelined for the rest of the season after he had undergone surgery in Spain to fix an ACL injury.

‘Today’s results mean that both Arsenal and Manchester City are locked together at the top of the table (before Liverpool and Aston Villa’s games) on 14 points, so the fact that the Gunners are now clear favourites to win the title means that Betfair punters clearly believe that Rodri’s long-term absence will hinder the defending champions.’

Betfair added that ‘prices quoted in copy are correct at time of publication but liable to change’.

Betfair’s article was posted before Liverpool recorded a 2-1 victory at Wolves to move to the top of the Premier League table on 15 points.

City and Arsenal sit second and third respectively on 14 points, with Pep Guardiola’s side ahead due to their superior goal difference.

Chelsea are currently fourth on 13 points while Aston Villa, who have a game in hand, are fifth on 12 points.

City have dominated the top-flight in recent seasons, winning six of the last seven Premier League titles.

Liverpool are the only side to have stopped them, clinching the 2019-20 trophy under former boss Jurgen Klopp.

^ ^ Enzo Maresca reveals what he told Cole Palmer after four-goal Chelsea haul

Cole Palmer and Enzo Maresca

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca told Cole Palmer he should have scored another couple of goals despite his record-breaking haul against Brighton.

Palmer produced a breathtaking first-half display at Stamford Bridge to become the first player in Premier League history to score four goals before half-time in a single game.

Opening his account in the 21st minute, the Englishman then scored from the spot before bending a superb free-kick into the top corner to bring up his hat-trick.

A fourth, assisted by Jadon Sancho, came just before the break, as the Blues saw out the second half to make it three league wins in a row to move inside the top four.

While lauding his mentality, however, Maresca insisted he will always demand more from his prodigious attacking talent.

‘I just said to Cole, he scored four but he could have scored two or three more,’ the Chelsea boss said of Palmer who also hit the post and had two goals ruled out in a chaotic first half. ‘It is important he continues to be hungry and ambitious.

‘I know Cole from many years ago. I had him for one entire season at City and then the first team. The best thing he has is the way he is today as a boy, he was exactly that way two or three years ago.’

Chelsea's Cole Palmer celebrates scoring a goal.

Maresca continued: ‘Today in football, young players change very quickly. They score one goal and they think they are already.

‘Cole has scored many goals, and many assists, he is a top player but he has never changed. This is the most important thing.’

Reflecting after the game, Palmer was in agreement with his boss that he could have walked away with a few more goals under his belt.

‘I should have had five or six!’ he told Match of the Day

‘When I missed the first chance I was upset but with the way they played and their high line I felt we’d get more chances.

“The manager set up a good game plan, we knew how to attack them with first-time passes in behind. I try and play every game the best I can.’

^ ^ Enzo Maresca hails Chelsea summer signing who is already ‘dressing room leader’

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca
Enzo Maresca is very pleased with the leadership qualities of one Chelsea signing (Picture: Getty)

Enzo Maresca admitted he has been impressed with the leadership qualities exhibited by Tosin Adarabioyo since his summer move to Chelsea.

Adarabioyo made the switch across west London to Stamford Bridge in June following the expiration of his contract at Fulham.

Despite fighting off competition from Manchester United and Newcastle to secure his signature, the defender only made his maiden Premier League start for the Blues last weekend against West Ham.

Regardless, Adarabioyo has clearly left a noticeable impression in the opening weeks of the season, with Maresca pinpointing him as one of the instrumental figures within Chelsea’s new-look dressing room.

‘Very impressed. I have known Tosin since City. Very impressed with him, the way he has behaved on and off the pitch,’ Maresca said when asked about the 27-year-old on Friday.

‘He is one of the leaders in the dressing room. We are very delighted and very happy with him.’

Adarabioyo’s presence in the starting XI has coincided with an uptick in defensive rigidity, but Maresca insisted there is plenty more to be done in that department.

Tosin Adarabioyo and Cole Palmer of Chelsea during a training session

‘I think defensively we also need to improve many, many things but we are in the right direction,’ he added.

‘That doesn’t mean every game we are not going to concede, that’s not real, we are going to concede goals but it’s important that we improve the concept between all the team.

‘When we talk about the defensive line, you used to think we are just talking about the defensive players but it’s not.

‘I said after the West Ham game that the best players defending were Cole [Palmer] and Nicolas [Jackson], the way they started the high pressing to give us a chance to manage the situation better. It’s about all the team.’

Chelsea will look to make it four successive wins in all competitions when they host Brighton on Saturday.

Maresca’s side are still without captain Reece James but will have Romeo Lavia available for selection for the first time since the opening Premier League weekend.

^ ^ Arsenal’s £42m summer signing of Riccardo Calafiori brandished ‘sad’ by Champions League rivals

The Arsenal badge and Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta

Juventus sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli has admitted that Arsenal’s summer signing of Riccardo Calafiori saddened him.

The 22-year-old arrived in north London from Bologna this summer in a deal worth £42m after an impressive spell in Serie A.

Calafiori made his first start for the Gunners in their 2-2 draw with Manchester City last weekend and notched up his first goal for the club with a superb first-half strike.

While settling in nicely at the Emirates, it could have been very different for the versatile defender with several European clubs linked with a summer move for Calafiori.

One such team was Serie A giants Juventus and the club’s sporting director has now admitted his concern with the growing trend of talented young Italian players leaving the country to join other elite clubs abroad.

‘It’s sad not being able to keep Riccardo Calafiori in Serie A,’ Giuntoli told Corriere della Sera when asked about Calafiori’s move to Arsenal.

‘It’s a regret for all of Italian football, not just for Juventus.

‘We need to question ourselves about not having had the strength to keep a player of his calibre in Italy. The big teams have all taken a defender, not him.’

Mikel Arteta, meanwhile, was full of praise for Calafiori and how quickly he has adapted to the rigours of Premier League football.

‘He came back, had a little glimpse, then went on international duty and got injured, so we had to manage him again,’ Arteta said on Friday.

‘Then we threw him against Man City away for the first Premier League start and I think he was superb.

‘He’s really good. He’s adapted really well to the group, his understanding is exceptional and you see he’s a player with an enormous courage and personality to play, so he’s going to give us a lot.’

Asked about the decision to play him against City, Arteta added: ‘With another player, probably I wouldn’t do it.

‘But because I know how he copes and when I speak to him he really wants it, I decided to do it and he showed that he’s prepared to do it.’

Tottenham aimed a not-so-subtle dig at north London rivals Arsenal following their 3-0 win over Qarabag in the Europe League on Thursday.

Despite going down to ten men following Radu Dragusin’s first-half sending-off, Ange Postecoglou’s side did not waver from their customary attacking style.

Four minutes after the dismissal, Brennan Johnson gave Spurs the lead before second-half strikes from Pape Matar Sarr and Dominic Solanke saw them ease to a comfortable win on their return to European football.

The tactics starkly contrasted with Premier League rivals Arsenal who adopted a very conservative approach when put in a similar position after Leandro Trossard was sent off in last weekend’s top-of-the-table clash with Manchester City.

Holding a 2-1 lead at the break, the Gunners spent much of the second half with ten men behind the ball before ultimately succumbing to John Stones’ late equaliser.

Following the draw, Mikel Arteta’s set-up came under the microscope, with pundit Roy Keane, in particular, slamming the Spaniard’s ‘dinosaur’ tactics.

And Tottenham were clearly keen to poke the bear one more time, posting a graphic of the match stats from their Europa League win with the caption: ’10 men and we never stopped playing our football.’

While Arteta’s tactics were criticised by some, the Spaniard was keen to defend his decision-making, citing a 5-0 defeat against City two years ago as a factor that motivated Arsenal’s safety first gameplan.

‘We had to play the game that we had to play,’ he said earlier in the week. ‘In the first 10 or 15 minutes we couldn’t. 11 against 11, then we got much better and obviously were thrown into a very different context. Every team does.

‘They played 30 seconds with 10 men. Look at what they did, it’s normal what they did for 30 seconds. We had to do it in a different way.

‘We learned from the past as well because unfortunately, we’ve been in that situation three times.

‘One was with Granit [Xhaka] after 37, 38 minutes and we conceded how many?’ We lost 5-0. We’d better learn. If not I would be very thick.’

Arsenal will look to get back to winning ways in the league on Saturday at home against Leicester, while Tottenham face a trip to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United on Sunday.

^ ^ Chelsea made ‘more than one enquiry’ to sign €80,000,000 AC Milan goalkeeper

Chelsea made ‘more than one enquiry’ to sign €80,000,000 AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan, according to reports in Italy.

The Blues signed Swedish-Danish ‘keeper Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal this summer for £20.7m, with the 22-year-old signing a seven-year contract.

Jorgensen has made three appearances to date, which came in the 5-0 Carabao Cup over Barrow AFC and the two Conference League qualifiers against Servette.

He has not yet played in the Premier League, with Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca opting for Robert Sanchez as his No.1 in the top-flight thus far.

But Chelsea’s goalkeeping options could’ve been very different, it has emerged, with Corriere dello Sport reporting the Blues made several enquiries for Maignan.

A move never materialised, though, perhaps due to the hefty €80m (£66.7m) price tag AC Milan placed on him amid interest from both Chelsea and Bayern Munich.

Maignan is thought to be very happy at AC Milan – and has no desire to leave – with his representatives currently in talks with the Italian giants over a new deal.

News of Chelsea’s attempts to land Maignan comes after Paul Scholes expressed concerns over the west Londoners’ current goalkeepers.

Speaking on The Overlap, brought to you by Sky Bet, Scholes said: ‘We were saying Maresca is going to be the first one gone.

‘These results have almost calmed things down. You look at the squad there is a lot of talent.

‘[But] I’m a little bit worried about the centre-forward to be honest. [And] I’m worried about the keeper a little bit.’

Chelsea have been in fine form in recent weeks, winning their last three matches in all competitions without conceding a goal.

The Blues are back in action on Saturday when they host Brighton at Stamford Bridge.

Manchester United’s £40,000,000 flop Donny van de Beek is ‘struggling to adapt’ to his new club Girona, according to reports.

The Red Devils splashed out a huge fee to sign the Dutch midfielder from Ajax in 2020 but he massively struggled before United sold him in a permanent transfer.

Van de Beek made a total of 62 appearances for United, producing just two goals and two assists in what was a hugely underwhelming spell in England.

United offloaded him to Spanish side Girona in July, but even after stepping down to a smaller club, Van de Beek is still having a hard time getting back to his best.

That’s according to Spanish outlet Sport, who report that Van de Beek arrived ‘blighted by physical problems’ due to his lack of game time at Old Trafford.

Van de Beek’s issues are not just physical, though, with the player also ‘having problems adapting’ to the tactics of his new manager Michel.

The 27-year-old has made four appearances across all competitions for Girona to date, three of which saw him come on as a substitute in La Liga.

Van de Beek was also handed a start in the Champions League against Paris-Saint Germain, playing for 58 minutes before he was taken off.

Meanwhile, speaking earlier this month, Marco van Basten criticised Van de Beek’s agent for allowing the midfielder to join United in 2020.

‘His manager was a bad advisor in that. That step was much too big,’ Van Basten said of Van de Beek’s move to United.

‘As an agent, you have to be able to decide – I’m sending him to that club, because that’s where he’s going to play. He went to two clubs and didn’t play a match.’

Frank de Boer added: ‘It’s actually crazy, idiotic and strange that such a player has barely played football for two years. Sometimes you have to join a club that suits you.

‘At Manchester United I saw him pick up balls on the left wing. I say… ‘you shouldn’t be doing that, you have to go for that goal’.’

^ ^ Arsenal fans claim former star has ‘disappeared’ after being exiled by Premier League club

Fans remain baffled as to why former Arsenal star Rob Holding has been exiled from Crystal Palace’s first team.

Roy Hodgson signed Holding on summer deadline day in 2023 for just £1million, with the defender looking to make a fresh start in south London.

But he has made just one appearance for Palace to date in the 3-0 Carabao Cup loss at Manchester United a year ago to the day.

Injuries ruled the defender out for much of last season but after featuring in pre-season under new manager Oliver Glasner, it was expected he would play a more active role for the Eagles.

But since being an unused sub in the loss to West Ham in August, Holding has not featured in a single matchday squad, with Glasner later revealing that he was training away from the first-team.

The player himself then fuelled speculation that his Palace career was over by deleting all references of the Premier League club from his social media accounts.

And on Thursday there was the final nail in the coffin: Palace posted their official 2024/25 squad photo, featuring both the men’s and women’s teams, with Holding nowhere to be found.

This lead to fans on Twitter beginning their own search party to uncover just where the 29-year-old had vanished to, with @pelova21 tweeting: ‘They’re not letting Rob Holding out the basement.’

‘Netflix documentary idea: Finding Rob: The search for Rob Holding,’ Parag Patel posted, while @Luke_Seychell added: ‘Rob Holding not in the photo – honestly just terminate his contract mutually, best for all parties.’

‘Rob Holding nowhere to be seen. Fellas disappeared quicker than this hairline,’ @RyArsenal quipped.

@NorrisSZN__ pondered: ‘Did Rob Holding go to one too many Zach Bryan shows because why has he missed out on the squad photo?’

Why have Crystal Palace exiled Rob Holding?

In August, Glasner said: ‘Rob is training individually at the moment. We had a talk together and he knows the reason but it’s something that stays between Rob and me.

Asked whether he had a future at Palace, the manager added: ‘This is his and the club’s decision, but it’s not possible before, so the next opportunity for him is January.’

The Athletic have reported that Holding and Glasner fell out following the aforementioned loss to West Ham.

It is said the centre-back questioned the Austrian over doing a post-match running session as he was concerned about an injury he was nursing.

He eventually took part in the session but afterward Glasner told him to train alone with the under-21s.

But for those concerned about his whereabouts fear not, as Holding did make a rare appearance on Tuesday night in Palace U21s 3-1 win over Gillingham in the EFL Trophy.

^ ^ Spanish football president criticises own player for speaking out against racist abuse

A Spanish football president has appeared to criticise his own player who came forward to speak about his experiences with racist abuse in La Liga.

Chrisantus Uche, who signed for Getafe this summer, spoke openly about the unfair treatment he received from referees after just seven games in the top-flight division.

‘First two matches or three matches, I saw it with my eyes the referees are are so bad, they are so bad,’ he told ESPN earlier this week. ‘They will kick me, the referee will just say I should stand up. No, it’s a foul, you have to blow it.

‘But if they kick another person the referee will just blow it. And it’s so painful, you cannot do anything, you don’t have any power because the referee has power to do anything he wants to do.

‘No, he has to stop it. Me I will fall down, they will kick me and I will fall down in front of the referee and the referee will not do anything. No it’s not good.’

Uche also claimed he was on the receiving end of racist abuse from fans, saying: ‘Both the fans, some of the fans, they will be hailing you “f*****g Black,’ you are a ‘Black this this, that that.” No it’s not good. It’s not good.’

However, those suggestions have been dismissed by Getafe’s president Angel Torres, who labelled Uche’s comments a ‘complete mistake’.

‘The fact that it is not the right question to ask a young man who has just arrived does not justify him speaking badly of the referees or anyone else,’ Torres told El Chiringuito TV.

Torres went on to criticise journalists for their part in the interview and even suggested that Uche didn’t understand Spanish well enough to conduct the interview or know exactly what fans yelled at him.

This comes even though the midfielder has played football in Spain for two years now and conducted the interview in English.

‘I will talk to him as I haven’t seen the full interview. I don’t want to justify it, but someone who doesn’t speak Spanish, who has a microphone placed in front of him, it seems to me that the journalist is more at fault,’ Torres said.

‘The people in charge of my press office who were not there but have listened to it, and the journalists who asked that question to a lad who just arrived a month and a half ago, are just as guilty. That doesn’t justify him having to speak badly of anyone.’

Asked about Uche’s claims of fans racially abusing him, Torres responded: ‘But if he doesn’t understand, how is he going to say that? He can’t say that. When he’s been here for one or two years and understands Spanish, he can say what he wants.’

Getafe’s assistant head coach Patri Moreno echoed his president’s sentiments and insisted that Uche’s comments were likely a mistake.

‘Uche does not master the language well. Either he has not interpreted the question correctly or it must have been a mistake in answering,’ he said.

The troubling comments come just months after three Valencia fans were handed prison sentences for racially abusing Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior.
