^ ^ Manchester United hero warns Ruben Amorim over Benjamin Sesko problem

Manchester United v Wolverhampton Wanderers - Premier League

Manchester United are at risk of repeating the same mistake with Benjamin Sesko as they made with Rasmus Hojlund, warns Dwight Yorke.

The 22-year-old moved to Old Trafford from RB Leipzig over the summer in a deal which was worth just short of £74m.

The Slovenia international came with a glowing reputation and had also been linked with the likes of Arsenal, but it has been a slow start to life in England for him.

Sesko has scored just twice in his first 15 Premier League appearances and has not found the back of the net since October 4 in a win over Sunderland.

It was another frustrating night for the young forward on Tuesday as he missed a couple of good chances in the Red Devils’ tedious 1-1 draw with Wolves at Old Trafford.

Former Manchester United striker Yorke is not necessarily laying the blame at Sesko’s feet, saying the team is not creating enough chances for him or playing to his strengths.

The Trinidad and Tobago legend sees a similar situation emerging to that of Hojlund, who was extremely underwhelming with Manchester United but looks vastly improved since his summer move to Napoli.

‘At the end of the day, as a striker, you’re always going to be judged on goals,’ Yorke told FootItalia. ‘You can work as hard as possible, and people are seeing the work that Benjamin Sesko has put in. However, I still think United are adapting to playing with him too.

‘They’re still finding their feet and understanding the individual roles that they all have. I think that’s why it’s taking some time with Sesko.

‘Historically at United, creative balls are coming in, trying to get that number nine on the end of their crosses and creativity, and I think that’s an area United could improve in to help Sesko.

‘They haven’t really found a set way of playing to his strengths yet. You can see the manager is just thinking: “Just get results. It doesn’t matter how we get results right now, just get results.”

‘That has isolated Sesko. If United are not really getting him on the score sheet, it doesn’t really matter. But that can only carry on for so long because if you’re not getting that creativity and they’re not creating for you as a number nine, the frustration will kick in.

‘We’ve seen what happened to Rasmus Hojlund, and United will need to find a way of avoiding a similar situation, but creating more chances for Sesko.’

Amorim speaks out on Wolves disappointment

Speaking after the disappointing draw with the Premier League’s bottom club, Amorim suggested the disjointed performance was down to injuries and Africa Cup of Nations absences.

‘I think we are in one situation that you have a lot of players out in the same time,’ he told a post-match press conference.

‘Of course, when you play Casemiro and [Manuel] Ugarte, in the middle, you know that is different. When you have Kobbie Mainoo or Mason Mount or Bruno [Fernandes], that is normal.

‘So, we just need to recover our players, the players from AFCON to return, and then the fluidity is going to be different. But again, we won the last one.

‘Today, we could [have] won with the players that we have. We had lack of fluidity, and then lack of quality, and then lack of creation of chances. And then we suffer a goal with set-pieces with the team that, and [yet] we are tall in this moment. So, these details are important to win these games in difficult moments.’

Despite just eight wins in 19 games, the Red Devils are sixth in the Premier League table and are back in action at Leeds on Sunday.

Declan Rice sent a message to his teammates after missing Arsenal’s winover Aston Villa on Tuesday night through injury.

The England midfielder sat out of the impressive 4-1 victory over the Villains, which sent the Gunners five points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

The game was goalless at half-time, but efforts from Gabriel Magalhaes, Martin Zubimendi, Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Jesus gave Arsenal a rousing win.

Villa’s Ollie Watkins scored in the 94th minute in a consolation for Unai Emery’s men as their 11-match winning run came to a sudden stop.

It is very rare that Rice misses a big game for Arsenal, but Mikel Arteta will be encouraged by how his team performed without the influential midfielder.

The Gunners boss revealed before the game that Rice picked up a knee injury in the win over Brighton which kept him out of the clash at the Emirates.

The 26-year-old may have missed the action, but he still celebrated the win, posting on Instagram: ‘This team!!! We keep going ❤️❤️❤️.’

(Picture: Instagram)

Explaining Rice’s fitness issues before the Villa match, Arteta said: ‘Declan got a big kick in his knee during the match [against Brighton], at the start of the match actually, and by the time he finished the match he had a massive swell up. The game [against Villa] was too early for him to be able to consider.

On whether he believes it is a short-term issue, the Spaniard said: ‘I think so. I hope that when the swelling comes out he can function, he will be fine. We miss Riccy [Calafiori] as well today.’

Arsenal are back in action at Bournemouth on Saturday and Arteta could not be sure whether the former West Ham man would be available.

‘Depends,’ said the manager. ‘That swelling has to come right down for him to have the chance to function. He wasn’t available to do that today yet. He’s improving but let’s see what it is in the next couple of days.’

Arsenal’s injury problems have cleared up a bit, with both Jesus and Kai Havertz starting on the bench against Villa, fit again after long-term injuries.

Gabriel Magalhaes is back in central defence alongside William Saliba, with Ben White on the bench and Jurrien Timber at right-back.

Riccardo Calafiori and Cristhian Mosquera are expected to return soon, as is Rice, with just Max Dowman out for a longer spell.

A delighted Arteta said after the rousing win over Villa: ‘It’s belief, it’s energy as well because they put in so much.

‘We’re playing every two-and-a-half days, the schedule is very, very demanding, we have some very tough matches and injuries but the players are still winning, so winning helps all that.

‘All the sacrifices and commitment that you put in gets reflected in results and great performances and that’s so satisfying, but we know there’s still so much to play for.

‘It’s a great way to end the year, that’s for sure, and tomorrow we’ll have a good night with our families, but then the next day we are in and we have to go to Bournemouth, and we know what that means.’

He added: ‘I’m so happy. We play every three days, we played an opponent today that comes from 11 wins in a row, a superb team, very difficult to play against and we knew that we were going to have periods throughout the game.

‘We talked about how demanding it was going to be emotionally and we struggled in the first 10 minutes, arriving a bit late. They were playing through us and creating some open space situations that they are very dangerous at.

‘Then we adjusted, got a bit more control, two big chances by Viktor [Gyokeres] and one scrappy situation inside the box, but we didn’t manage to score. In the second half, we clicked.

‘Everything went much better, timings were better and the individual duels were fulfilled in an extraordinary way, so efficient in everything that we did.

‘Unlike the last few games where we had so many big situations, today we were very prolific and accurate to make the difference.’

^ ^ Emiliano Martinez embroiled in furious bust-up with Arsenal fans after Aston Villa defeat

Emiliano Martinez had to be held back as he clashed with a group of Arsenal fans following Aston Villa’s crushing 4-1 defeat at the Emirates.

It proved an immensely disappointing night for Martinez on his return to Arsenal, where he spent ten years, as Mikel Arteta’s men swept their visitors aside to lay down a marker in this year’s title race.

Tuesday’s high-stakes Premier League contest came to life after a goalless opening 45 minutes and it was the Gunners who drew first blood as Gabriel Magalhaes beat Martinez in the air to break the deadlock.

The hosts had a second within just seven minutes of the break as Martin Zubimendi was put through by Martin Odegaard before cooly poking the ball beyond Martinez to take the roof off the stadium.

After a lengthy VAR check for offside, Leandro Trossard was awarded a third to increase the deficit, before Gabriel Jesus came on and scored with his first meaningful contribution to put the league leaders out of sight.

Ollie Watkins’ stoppage-time effort was nothing more than a consolation for third-place Villa, who now sit six points adrift of Arsenal in the table.

Both Arteta and Unai Emery will be watching on with interest when Manchester City, who sit second, travel to the Stadium of Light on New Year’s Day, no doubt hoping Sunderland cause an upset against Pep Guardiola’s rampant side.

At various points throughout the match, chants of, ‘You’re just a s*** David Raya’, could be heard in the crowd, directed at former Arsenal ‘keeper Martinez in the Villa goal.

Martinez has proven to be a magnificent piece of business for Villa in his six years at the club. But it was a frustrating night for the World Cup-winning Argentine and he let emotions got the better of him as he made his way down the tunnel shortly after the final whistle.

‘You’re rattled! F*** off, f*** off, f*** off! He’s so rattled. Wakey wakey!’ an Arsenal fan could be heard barking at Martinez.

A visibly irate Martinez was seen turning around and giving it back to the group of supporters in question and had to be shepherded away before the altercation was able to escalate.

WARNING: STRONG LANGUAGE

Martinez and the rest of Emery’s squad will be desperate to get back to winning ways when they return to action away to Nottingham Forest in three days’ time.

Facing the media after his side’s setback, Emery denied claims that he had snubbed Arteta at the full-time whistle.

Asked about the apparent snub, the Spaniard told reporters: ‘Yes, but it’s simple. You can watch. After [finishing] the match, always my routine is quick, shake hands and go with my coaches, with my players, or go to the dressing room.

‘And I was waiting, I was waiting. Of course, he was happy and he was with his coaches and I decided to go inside. But for me, no problem.’

Despite the result, the Villa boss said he was ‘so proud’ of his players for their application and togetherness across the season.

‘So, so proud of everything we are doing,’ he added.

‘So, so proud with the players, how we achieved, until now, 39 points, and how we are being ambitious and as well realistic.

‘We are realising every match we are playing, how we can exploit our potential and how we can get and set our target each match.

‘Today we lost. We did fantastic in the first half. The second half, we conceded one goal, we got injured with Amadou Onana and of course in the middle we had not the structure we needed to keep strongly in the middle.

‘But we competed fantastic, and we conceded the second goal and then it was more difficult. We didn’t give up.’

Arteta insisted the lack of a handshake with his fellow countryman was ‘not an issue’.

‘No, that’s okay,’ the Arsenal head coach said.

‘That’s part of the game, not an issue at all.’

^ ^ Chelsea vs Bournemouth: Predicted lineup today and confirmed team news

Newcastle United v Chelsea - Premier League
Marc Cucurella is a doubt for Tuesday’s game (Picture: Getty)

Enzo Maresca could well be forced into changes when Chelsea host Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League tonight.

The Blues fell to a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday after a second-half brace from Ollie Watkins.

Chelsea have now won just one of their past six league games, but have little time to lick their wounds as they gear up for the visit of Bournemouth just three days later.

And Maresca may have to make changes against Andoni Iraola’s side, who themselves have endured a miserable recent run, with their last victory coming in late October against Nottingham Forest.

Marc Cucurella has been virtually ever-present at left-back for Chelsea this season, but the Spaniard was forced off midway through the second half against Villa after picking up an injury.

‘He was complaining about hamstring, so we don’t know if it’s an injury now or not. So he asked for the change,’ Maresca said post-match when asked about Cucurella’s condition.

Given the quick turnaround, the Chelsea boss may not want to take a risk, meaning Malo Gusto could start at left-back in place of Cucurella.

Reece James played a full 90 minutes at the weekend but could start again this evening, while Wesley Fofana could come back into the starting lineup.

The Frenchman was rested against Aston Villa to manage his fitness as Benoit Badiashille started in his place. That could be reversed tonight.

Jorrel Hato could have been in line to start in Cucurella’s place tonight, but the Dutchman picked up an injury during a recent warm-up and will not be available for selection against Bournemouth.

Elswhere, Romeo Lavia, Levi Colwill and Dario Essugo remain long-term absentees for the Blues.

Chelsea XI to face Bournelouth – Metro prediction

Marresca will be minded to continue with the partnership of Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez in the middle of the park, but could rotate further up the pitch.

Alejandro Garnacho has been short of goal contributions in recent weeks, and Jamie Gittens could replace the Argentine on the left wing tonight.

Estevao has also returned to fitness, coming off the bench to replace Palmer against Villa, and will be pushing for a start.

The aforementioned Palmer cut a frustrated figure when he was brought off at the weekend, and will be hopeful of playing the full 90 minutes tonight for the first time since returning from his long injury lay-off.

^ ^ Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool make phone calls to discuss £84m transfer target

Kenan Yildiz of Juventus FC reacts during the Serie A

Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool have all made enquiries to sign Kenan Yildiz in recent weeks, with the forward dallying over a new contract at Juventus.

Yildiz further established himself as one of the most exciting young talents in Italy last term, after which he was named in the Serie A Team of the Season.

Playing in a more central role this season, the 20-year-old has picked up where he left off, racking up six goals and four assists in his opening 16 appearances of Juve’s top-flight campaign.

But while Yildiz’s magnificent performances have lit up Italian football, the youngster’s off-the-field situation has been the subject of intense speculation, with top clubs around Europe beginning to circle.

Juventus have been aware of growing interest from the Premier League’s elite for some time and there have been fears in Turin that Yildiz’s head could be turned should an exciting opportunity arise elsewhere.

It has meant that, until now, there has been next to no progress with regards to Yildiz’s contract negotiations. However, Juve have been panicked by the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool and Tuttosport report that ‘a yes is closer than ever’.

It’s claimed there have been ‘numerous phone calls’ arriving from major European clubs on a weekly basis and Yildiz’s outstanding form has only intensified the interest of Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Real Madrid.

All three Premier League sides are said to have ‘monitored Yildiz repeatedly’ in recent months. Madrid boss Xabi Alonso, meanwhile, has recommended the player to club president Florentino Perez as an ideal addition for his squad.

Juventus have responded by making Yildiz a ‘huge offer’ and it’s thought the ‘top-notch’ salary increase – to €6million-a-season (£5.2m-a-season) – could convince the Turkey international to finally sign an extension.

Such an agreement would immediately make the £84m-rated Yildiz the joint-highest paid player in Juventus’ star-studded first-team squad, alongside centre-forward Jonathan David.

Pushed to try to find a resolution as quickly as possible as a result of Yildiz’s recent displays, Juve have pencilled in a new meeting with the player and his father, Engin, for January.

Yildiz’s current deal is due to expire in three-and-a-half years time and Juve’s hierarchy are hoping he will commit his future to 2031.

Juve head coach Luciano Spalletti has a good relationship with Yildiz and this could prove a decisive factor in convincing the attacker to extend his stay.

In a recent with Tuttosport, Yildiz suggested Juventus was the perfect environment for a young player like himself to cut their teeth.

Juventus FC v AS Roma - Serie A
Yildiz’s current contract runs through to June 2029 (Picture: Getty)

‘Juventus, a paradise for youngsters? I think the Next Gen [Juve’s reserve team] is very important as it allows the youngest players to show their value and not suffer too much from the leap to the first team,’ he explained.

‘And it’s fantastic that the club has no qualms about focusing on guys like me or [Nicolo] Savona, [Samuel] Mbangula, [Vasilije] Adzic, [Jonas Jakob] Rouhi.

‘Then it’s up to us to make sure that the club is satisfied with a choice like this: here we have everything we need to succeed, it’s up to us to give our all and repay Juve for their trust.

‘We are a very united group and I get along very well with everyone. I wouldn’t say that I get along better with anyone in particular, but obviously being one of the youngest, I spend most of my time with team-mates my age.’

Back in October, Zinedine Zidane, widely considered to be among the greatest footballers of all time, picked out Yildiz as a player to keep an close eye on for the future.

‘I like him, he is a good player,’ the legendary ex-France, Juve and Real Madrid midfielder told Turkish outlet Fanatik.

‘He scores goals. He has quality. He still needs to improve and prove himself.’
