Michael Carrick has been urged to sell Erik ten Hag’s £36.5m Manchester United signing Joshua Zirzkee before the January transfer window closes.

United still have time to complete some last-minute January deals should they wish to do so, with the winter window slamming shut at 7pm on Monday night.

The Red Devils want to sign a new central midfielder but are expected to wait until the summer to sanction a big-money deal in that area of the pitch.

Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba are all being tracked ahead of the summer transfer window.

Two of those three Premier League stars could even be signed with United set to be short in that area after Casemiro announced he was leaving the club at the end of the season.

Carrick is wary of losing any key members of his squad as he eyes a productive end to the season and looks to boost his chances of getting the Manchester United job on a permanent basis.

The former United midfielder has already reintegrated Kobbie Mainoo into the first-team, dismissing any notion the 20-year-old could be offloaded before the January window closes.

Zirkzee has also been linked with a winter move after largely struggling following his £36.5m move from Bologna in 2024.

The Netherlands international only scored three Premier League goals during his first season at Old Trafford and has started just four games so far this term.

Clubs in Italy have expressed interest in signing Zirkzee and ex-Manchester United striker Louis Saha believes his former club should be looking to cash in.

Asked whether United made a mistake signing Zirkzee and should not sell Ten Hag’s signing, Saha told Gambling.com: ‘I think yes.

‘I will have less concern about him leaving because he’s not playing regularly, he’s not the first choice. If we need a main striker, it’s almost not his type.

‘He could maybe drift on sides, maybe down the middle because he’s very technical. He can adapt, but where’s the player we saw in Italy?

‘I doubt that he’s the same type of player that we’re looking for in the future. So I think maybe in some ways, he will have to think about his own future.

‘At this moment, everyone has to contribute, not to think about their future, not thinking about anything else and try to gel with Carrick, do their best and then whatever the contract is for, agent talks, maybe media.

‘I’m still thinking as a player, and he has to just think about working hard, improve the communication with other players, especially with the midfield and see how he goes.

‘If at the end of the season he scores 10 goals, he will have the move that he wants.’

Zirkzee was said to be open to a January move earlier in the month in order to boost his fading hopes of going to this summer’s World Cup.

But it was reported last week that Zirzkee was now determined to stay at United and fight for a place in the team.

Asked about Zirkzee’s future at Old Trafford on Friday, Carrick said: ‘I think Josh has just been trying to work to get fit and get back around the group and it’s been great to have him back training yesterday with a group for the first time.

‘That’s literally as far as it goes for me and for Josh. I’m looking forward to working with him. That’s it. Nothing else needs to be said.’

Gary Neville has warned Arsenal that Chelsea will go into their Carabao Cup semi-final second leg ‘so confident’ after comeback wins over West Ham and Napoli.

Liam Rosenior’s side trailed Antonio Conte’s Napoli in the Champions League on Wednesday night before staging a second-half comeback.

The 3-2 comeback win sent Serie A champions Napoli crashing out of the competition and Chelsea straight into the knockout stages, avoiding a dreaded play-off.

Chelsea looked to be heading to a shock defeat to relegation-battlers West Ham on Saturday, trailing the Hammers 2-0 thanks to first-half goals from Jarrod Bowen and Crysencio Summerville.

But the Blues showed their battling spirit once more, coming from two goals down to win with Joao Pedro, Marc Cucurella and Enzo Fernandez all scoring to leave West Ham devastated.

It was the first time in Premier League history that Chelsea have won a match in which they have trailed by two goals or more at the half-time interval.

Chelsea will need to mount another comeback to reach the Carabao Cup final after losing the first leg to Premier League leader Arsenal 3-2.

Neville says ‘confidence’ will not be an issue for Chelsea given their recent comeback wins, though he suggested the team’s inconsistency could be their undoing.

‘What a great comeback for Chelsea, creating their own history having never done it before – coming back from two goals down,’ Neville said on Sky Sports.

‘Devastation for West Ham, they contributed enormously to the game. But Chelsea, you can watch them in the same game and think two completely different things.

‘They looked like kids and babies for large parts of the game and then all off a sudden they come to life and they are a real force.

‘They go into the top four and they’ll into that game against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup semi-final on Tuesday so confident having come back in the last two games against Napoli and West Ham.

‘West Ham, keep your heads up. If you play like that, you’ve got a great chance of staying up.’

While confidence in the Chelsea camp should be high ahead of their trip to north London, the same can be said for an Arsenal side following wins in the Premier League and Champions League.

Mikel Arteta’s side beat Kairat during the week to complete a flawless Champions League group campaign before thumping Leeds United 4-0 on Saturday.

Arsenal were heavy favourites ahead of their trip to Elland Road but would have been wary of more dropped points following three successive league games without a win.

Gunners star Noni Madueke said: ‘It’s massive. Obviously, our last couple of performances in the Premier League haven’t been the greatest in terms of results, but today was a real statement.

‘We’re going to watch what [City and Villa] do and focus on our game as well on Tuesday. That’s most important for us.

‘Adding confidence after a performance like this, not only just the win, but a really dominant performance.

‘We’re going into that game on Tuesday knowing what’s at stake and knowing what we need to do.’

Arsenal or Chelsea will face either Manchester City or holders Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final on March 22.

^ ^ Man Utd vs Fulham: Predicted lineup today and confirmed team news

Arsenal v Manchester United - Premier League
Cunha has starred off the bench in Carrick’s two games in charge (Picture: Getty)

Manchester United are looking to make it three wins on the bounce under new boss Michael Carrick against Fulham this afternoon.

After a derby victory over Manchester City, United stunned Premier League leaders Arsenal at the Emirates last weekend with Patrick Dorgu and Matheus Cunha both on target with sensational efforts.

Dorgu was however forced off later in the second-half with a hamstring injury.

While United are still assessing the extent of the issue, it is believed to be a grade 2 hamstring tear which could sideline the Denmark international for eight to 10 weeks.

Dorgu has been sensational in a more advanced role under Carrick, starring on the left with his absence leaving the United boss with his first problem to solve.

While not a natural winger, Cunha has excelled off the bench against City and Arsenal and will surely come into the side today.

Benjamin Sesko scored three goals in two appearances under Darren Fletcher but is still to start under Carrick. Bryan Mbeumo has excelled in his role through the middle and bringing in Sesko would require a reshuffle that could see Amad dropped to the bench.

The temptation will be to stick with what worked so well against City and Arsenal.

United remain without Matthijs de Ligt who has still not returned to training due to a back problem that has sidelined him since the start of November.

Noussair Mazraoui is available after his AFCON campaign and could be an option to come into the side should Carrick feel the need to rest Diogo Dalot or Luke Shaw.

But with United looking as good as they have all season, major changes are unlikely.

Were it not for Dorgu’s injury, Carrick may have very well opted for the same winning formula today.

Cunha will likely come in for the injured Dane.
