^ ^ Man Utd stars in agreement over perfect manager for full-time position

Manchester United’s senior players have been won over by Michael Carrick and ‘the majority’ of the squad would reportedly be keen for the interim head coach to be offered a long-term contract.

The Red Devils found themselves in a state of disarray when Carrick took over the reins on a temporary basis last month, with Ruben Amorim picking up just three wins from his final 11 matches at the helm.

Darren Fletcher struggled to steady the ship while in charge as caretaker manager, overseeing a 2-2 draw away to lowly Burnley before suffering defeat to Brighton in the third round of the FA Cup.

But since picking up the pieces from Fletcher, Carrick has led the side to five wins from a possible six in the English top flight and, in the process, brought a sense of optimism back to the fanbase which has been so badly lacking in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

The 44-year-old – who won five Premier League titles during his playing days at Old Trafford – will hope to continue his unbeaten run when his side return to action at home to Crystal Palace this afternoon.

A host of high-profile managers were linked with the United job in the wake of Amorim’s dismissal, including the likes of Thomas Tuchel, Roberto De Zerbi, Carlo Ancelotti, Gareth Southgate, Mauricio Pochettino and Oliver Glasner.

But Tuchel, who at one stage was viewed as the outstanding candidate, went on to effectively rule himself out of the running by extending his deal with England until Euro 2028.

According to The Sun, though, Carrick’s impressive start has been such that senior members of the dressing room now want the ex-United, Tottenham and England midfielder to be appointed on a full-time basis.

It’s claimed the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw have all been blown away by Carrick’s tactical approach and his ‘knowledge of the world game’.

Carrick’s current contract at the Theatre of Dreams runs through to the end of the 2025/26 campaign and the club are yet to provide any assurances over his future beyond the summer.

United’s decision could ultimately come down to whether or not Carrick succeeds in steering the club to Champions League qualification, with the side positioned currently positioned strongly in fourth place.

Up Next

‘Michael has come in and done great because he has been a breath of fresh air,’ an Old Trafford source is reported to have told The Sun.

‘Some of the players expected that, because playing for Amorim was like playing chess.

‘You had to follow his rules to the tee, whereas Michael has told them to express themselves.

‘What they are really impressed with is his knowledge of the game.’

The source added: ‘He knows about players in other leagues and clearly spends an awful lot of time thinking about football and following it.

‘The players know it’s not their decision, but the majority would be happy if he got the job permanently.’

Former United players and club legends have been split when it comes to the manager’s position, with both Gary Neville and Roy Keane voicing their doubts above Carrick’s long-term credentials.

However, Juan Mata, who shared a dressing room with Carrick for five seasons, believes his former team-mate has proven he is ‘capable’ in his audition for the permanent job.

On suggestions that Carrick should be given a full-time deal, the ex-United and Spain midfielder told talkSPORT: ‘Well, Michael is very capable.

‘He’s a very intelligent guy. First of all, as a person, I love him.

‘He was a fantastic team-mate, always there for you, he never wanted to take the spotlight but he let his football talk.

‘He was very important for the team always, looking for these passes, especially for players like me in between the lines.’

According to Mata, Carrick is simply replicating what he did so brillianty during his playing days in quietly setting an ‘example’ for those around him to follow.

‘In the dressing room, he was an example for all of us: his character and his professionalism,’ the Spaniard added.

‘And again, I said it, he’s a very intelligent guy that loves the game and I’m very happy that he’s getting the results that the club need.

‘He knows how to get to the players, of course, and I’m enjoying watching the games at the moment.’

Arsenal hope to have an almost fully-fit squad available for their Premier League clash with Chelsea today.

Following the thumping derby victory over Tottenham, Mikel Arteta and his squad had a rare week off from games to rest and recover ahead of the visit of the Blues.

Bukayo Saka started on Sunday but was forced off in injury time after a tangle with Xavi Simons. The England international required some treatment before gingerly leaving the pitch.

Arteta did not mention any specific injury for Saka after the game, nor did he mention the winger when asked for an injury update in his pre-match press conference on Friday, suggesting he is available.

Martin Odegaard also made his return from a latest knock off the bench in north London and will be hoping to regain his place in the side.

Kai Havertz’s latest injury setback was not thought to be serious but it did rule him out of the squad last weekend. The Germany international is in contention to return to the squad for the visit of Liam Rosenior’s side.

That is also the case for Ben White, another who missed the derby after picking up a ‘niggle’ in training.

Mikel Merino meanwhile could have no further role to play this season after undergoing foot surgery earlier this month.

Chelsea will have their captain Reece James available for the trip across the capital.

The right-back came off late on against Burnley, the first time he has started a league match since the win over Crystal Palace on 25 January, but Rosenior eased any fresh injury fears over his skipper later that afternoon.

Marc Cucurella has missed the last two games with a hamstring injury and will miss out again today. Both Jorrel Hato and Malo Gusto have filled in during his absence with both in contention to fill the void at left-back again at the Emirates.

Estevao Willan was another who missed out last week and will miss out again today.

Wesley Fofana meanwhile will sit the game out after he became the latest Chelsea player to see red against Burnley.

Jamie Gittens, Dario Essugo and Levi Colwill remain absent.

Arsenal XI to face Chelsea – Metro prediction

Arteta’s biggest dilemma will be to stick with Eze or restore Odegaard to his midfield.

The battle in the middle of the park against Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez and Andrey Santos may suit the skipper more, but can the manager drop Eze after two goals against Spurs?

With Cucurella out and Fofana suspended, Rosenior will be without half his regular back four. Tosin Adarabioyo is in line to replace the Frenchman at centre-half while Gusto’s experience may see him given the nod at left-back.

Everton v Manchester United - Premier League

Manchester United are set to be without Lisandro Martinez once again when they take on Crystal Palace today.

The Argentina international has formed a formidable partnership with Harry Maguire once again at the heart of Michael Carrick defence, playing every minute of the new manager’s first five games in charge.

Martinez missed the 1-0 win over Everton after picking up a minor calf injury in the days leading up to that game on Merseyside. Carrick is hopeful it is not another long-term issue with the centre-half to be further assessed over the coming days.

It remains to be seen whether he will be fit for the trip to Newcastle United on Wednesday but the former Ajax star will have no role to play today.

Leny Yoro deputised in his place on Monday night having also turned in a fine performance off the bench against West Ham. The young Frenchman is expected to keep his place in the side.

United remain without Mason Mount and Matthijs de Ligt with still no real timeline on when either player will be available again.

De Ligt has not played since the end of November having previously played every minute of the season before his back issue struck.

Patrick Dorgu also remains sidelined with the hamstring injury he picked up in the win over Arsenal and is expected to be sidelined until April.

Carrick remains with the same squad that secured that narrow win at Everton last time out – but has a big decision to make up front.

Man Utd XI to face Crystal Palace – Metro prediction

Just as he did against Fulham and West Ham, Benjamin Sesko again came off the bench to score a vital goal for United on Monday having now netted six in his last seven appearances.

Carrick has resisted the urge to throw him into the starting XI, throwing real value behind his role as  a ‘finisher’ off the bench.

But against West Ham and Everton, United laboured somewhat in attack until he came on, lacking an option to stretch the opposition in the absence of Dorgu.

Sesko offers that, albeit in a different role up top, and his presence could be vital in breaking down Palace.

Amad Diallo’s contribution has waned in recent games with the Ivorian perhaps in need of a rest after his exploits at the Africa Cup of Nations. He could be the man to drop out.
