Ralf Rangnick believes the atmosphere around Manchester United has improved since the departure of some ‘unhappy’ players during the January transfer window.

There were loan moves for Anthony Martial, Donny van de Beek and Amad Diallo last month, with all three strugling to get into Rangnick’s first team plans.

Although he did not name names, the German admits that those who departed were unhappy with life at Old Trafford and were bringing down the atmosphere in the squad.

The interim manager believes the departures have seen an immediate improvement to the vibe at the club and hopes those that are still at Old Trafford can progress together.

‘There were players unhappy, the squad was too big, players realised they wouldn’t get game time and the atmosphere is better than it used to be a couple of weeks ago,’ Rangnick told a press conference on Friday.

‘Now, for us it’s about performing well, showing togetherness on the pitch, winning games and those are the things we can influence.’

It seems that the players who were unhappy at Old Trafford have perked up at their new temporary homes as well.

Martial scored his first goal for Sevilla in his third game for the club on Thursday night in the Europa League, while Diallo scored on his debut for Rangers, but has not netted in three appearances since.

Van de Beek has made the switch to Everton and is loving a fresh start after a frustrating 18 months with the Red Devils.

‘It’s like a new start,’ the Dutchman told Sky Sports. ‘This gives me a lot of energy and, you know, if you see the way the club is on the table, they want to go up.

‘Me also as a player, I want to go again to show what I can do. I think this combination is good.’

The 24-year-old has made two appearances under Frank Lampard so far, starting in the 3-0 win over Leeds last time out.
