^ ^ Kieran McKenna raids Manchester United for new head of recruitment at Ipswich Town

Former Manchester United assistant manager Kieran McKenna has raided his old club to bolster his own backroom team at Ipswich Town.

McKenna was retained by Ralf Rangnick after the German was named interim boss at Old Trafford last year having previously worked with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his predecessor Jose Mourinho.

But the 35-year-old moved on after just three games, replacing Paul Cook as the new Ipswich manager.

McKenna has thrived in his first management job in senior football, winning 10 and losing just two of his 17 games at the helm so far.

He has continued to put his own stamp on the club by bringing in a new member of staff from United in Sam Williams.

Williams worked as a first-team recruitment analyst at United having also worked as an academy scout.

His move to Portman Road sees him take up a new role as head of recruitment.

Williams told the official Ipswich website: ‘Mark Ashton [Ipswich CEO] really sold the club and it’s a really exciting time to be joining.

‘It’s been a privilege to work for Manchester United and I’ve worked with fantastic people, but this was an opportunity I just couldn’t turn down.

‘There’s a lot of work to be done between now and the end of the transfer window. I’m looking forward to the challenge and working together closely with Kieran, Martyn [Pert] and Gary [Probert].

‘We’re going to implement a very thorough and methodical process which will help provide the best available players to help us achieve our aims and ambitions, which is getting the club back up the leagues.’

^ ^ Everton set to sell Arsenal target Dominic Calvert-Lewin or Man Utd-linked Richarlison this summer

Everton are planning to sell either Dominic Calvert-Lewin or Richarlison in the summer in an effort to get their dire finances into order.

Currently sitting 17th in the Premier League – just three points above the relegation zone – the Toffees have endured a poor season and appear to be in crisis under Frank Lampard.

To make matters worse, this week the Merseyside club posted losses of over £121m for last season. This is in addition to similar sized losses made in the two previous seasons.

Now, according to The Sun, the bosses at Goodison Park have decided they need to recoup some revenue by selling one of their key assets when the window opens, with Calvert-Lewin or Richarlison in the frame to leave.

Calvert-Lewin has been linked heavily with Arsenal in recent months as Mikel Arteta tries to replace Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who joined Barcelona in January, while Manchester United have reportedly expressed interest in signing Richarlison.

Wolverhampton Wanderers v Arsenal - Premier League
Arteta has been rumoured to hold an interest in Calvert-Lewin (Pictures: Getty)

Speaking to The Bobble, Calvert-Lewin’s agent recently denied that a deal was already in the pipeline for his client to move to the Emirates.

‘Dominic has not agreed any deal, with any club.’ he said. ‘He is currently working very hard in training and is fully focused on finishing the season strong with Everton.’

Calvert-Lewin has spent much of this season on the sidelines with injury problems, scoring only three goals in 11 appearances.

Former Arsenal striker Alan Smith believes the Gunners should divert their attention away from the Everton striker as he doesn’t fit within the team’s style of play.

‘I wouldn’t say Calvert-Lewin is an ideal fit for Arsenal. In many ways, he’s an old-fashioned centre-forward and he loves balls being swung into the box,’ Smith told Sky Sports.

‘That’s not particularly Arsenal’s game. It can be when they get the full-backs forward and you can imagine Kieran Tierney whipping in crosses from the left towards him. But he’s not immediately what I would think of as an Arsenal centre-forward at the moment.’

^*^ Revealed: migrant workers in Qatar forced to pay billions in recruitment fees

Guardian investigation finds labourers – including those on World Cup-related projects – were left with huge debts

Low-wage migrant workers have been forced to pay billions of dollars in recruitment fees to secure their jobs in World Cup host nation Qatar over the past decade, a Guardian investigation has found.

Bangladeshi men migrating to Qatar are likely to have paid about $1.5bn (£1.14bn) in fees, and possibly as high as $2bn, between 2011 and 2020. Nepali men are estimated to have paid around $320m, and possibly more than $400m, in the four years between mid-2015 to mid-2019.

Plans to allow teams to qualify for the Champions League based on historical performance have received the backing of Europe’s top clubs as the best way to ensure the competition remains “premium” and “inclusive”. The changes are all but certain to be implemented by Uefa for the 2024-25 season.

The influential European Club Association has developed the system as part of a process of reforming Uefa’s competitions from 2024 and on Tuesday also gave its backing at its congress in Vienna to new rules regarding financial fair play (FFP).

^ ^ Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette scores hat-trick in Brentford friendly

Alexandre Lacazette bagged three goals for Arsenal today in a friendly match against Brentford B played at London Colney.

In what was an impressive display by the Frenchman, Lacazette scored his first halfway through the first-half with a deflected shot.

He then doubled Arsenal’s lead just after the break by reacting to a rebound before scoring his third with a shot from distance as the Gunners beat Brentford 4-1 in a behind closed doors friendly.

Lacazette rediscovering his shooting boots will be welcome news for manager Mikel Arteta who is short of goalscorers ever since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang moved to Barcelona in January.

Arsenal were interested in signing striker Dusan Vlahovic in the winter window but missed out on the Serbian, who joined Italian giants Juventus instead.

Despite his strong work ethic and pivotal role within the team’s play, Lacazette has scored just four goals in 23 Premier League appearances this season.

The 30-year-old is out of contract in the summer and is due to hold talks with the club at the end of the season.

‘We have discussed that at the end of the season, when we know where we are going, to make a decision together,’ Arteta said earlier this month.

‘We agreed the decision is to do it in the summer and that’s when we are going to do it.’

^*^ World Cup 2022: Every team that has qualified for Qatar so far

The World Cup in Qatar is fast approaching, with only eight months until the tournament kicks off in Doha.

Thirty-two teams will play a total of 64 games across 27 days in the battle to be named World Champions, with France the early favourites but plenty of strong sides willing to challenge the current holders.

But who are those sides? Below is a list of every team that has qualified for the tournament so far ahead of the draw, to be made on April 1st.

Who has qualified?

Qatar (hosts)

Qualified automatically thanks to being the hosts of this year’s tournament.

Argentina

This could be Lionel Messi’s final major tournament, and he and his side will be hoping to make it one to remember.

Brazil

Yet to lose any of their 16 qualifying games, Brazil will be confident of improving on their quarter-final finish in 2018.

England

Semi-finalists four years ago and Euro 2020 finalists, England will be among the favourites for the tournament when it commences.

Germany

Hansi Flick’s side came through a relatively straightforward group with ease, but conceded just four goals across qualifying and will be there or thereabouts.

France

The current World and Nations League champions, Les Blues are the team to beat as they look to retain their trophy.

Korea Republic

Korea, famous for their efforts in World Cup 2002 where they made the semifinals, made it through their group without losing a game.

Japan

Having not missed a World Cup since 1994, Japan will be looking to go further than their round of 16 loss to Paraguay in 2018.

Netherlands

After shockingly missing out on the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the Netherlands will be looking to bounce back with a strong performance in Qatar this November.

Switzerland

The Swiss knocked France out of Euro2020, and Granit Xhaka and co. will be looking to provide more shocks at this year’s tournament.

Iran

Iran topped their qualifying group but will need to continue their strong form if they want to make it out of the group stages at the seventh time of asking in the tournament proper.

Serbia

Having failed to qualify in either of the last two World Cups since they have become an independent nation, Serbia’s footballing talent continues to grow and they could make it third-time lucky in Qatar.

Spain

Perhaps coming into a new golden generation, with youthful stars aplenty, this tournament could come too soon for Spain but they will certainly be one to watch.

Belgium

A side coming to the end of their generation, Belgium will be hoping that their national team finally live up to the hype that they have promised for the last decade.

Denmark

Finishing 4th at Euro2020 amid adversity with Christian Eriksen, the Danes are dark horses for this competition once more, having finished above Scotland and Austria in their group to make it through.

Croatia

Finalists last time out in 2018, Croatia’s ship to win a major tournament may well have sailed, failing to make it past the round of 16 at Euro 2020.

Saudi Arabia

Heading to the World Cup for the second time in a row after missing out in 2010 and 2014, Saudi Arabia will be looking to improve on their record of not having made it out of the group stages since their first tournament appearance in 1994.

Uruguay

Two time World Cup champions, Uruguay have not hit the highs of their 4th place finish in 2010 since. In Luis Suarez’s twilight years, it may be the end of a generation in South America.

Ecuador

Did not appear in Russia in 2018, but will be back for Qatar. Will need to seriously over-achieve to make it out of the group stages, though.

Canada

Going to the World Cup for the first time since 1986, their qualification was met by jubilation across the country by players and fans alike. In Jonathan David and Alphonso Davies, they have mercurial talents, and will be hoping for a favourable draw.

Ghana

A goal from Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey was enough to see Ghana through to the World Cup finals, to make it four appearances in six tournaments since the turn of the century.

Senegal

Knocked out Egypt and Mo Salah on penalties to secure qualification. The Lions of Teranga will be heading to the World Cup for the third time in their history, having failed to make it out of the group stage in 2018. Will be hoping to do better in Qatar.

Portugal

Survived the play-offs to take their place in Qatar thanks to a 2-0 win over North Macedonia. Will be hoping that their current crop is enough to take them to their first World Cup final in the nation’s history.

Poland

Another side that didn’t make it out of the group stage in Russia, a Robert Lewandoski spearheaded Poland side will be expected to offer a better account of themselves come the 2022 tournament.

Tunisia

Returning for their second consecutive World Cup, the Eagles of Carthage have never made it out of the group stage in their history. They will be hoping that changes in Qatar.

Morocco

Stuggled at the recent Africa Cup of Nations but have made it to Qatar in November, having failed to make it out of the group stage in Russia.

Cameroon

Have not won a World Cup game since 2002 in 6 attempts, but a last minute winner against Algeria ensured that they will have a chance to change that record when the next tournament comes around.

^*^ ECA helps clubs flex their muscles and increase their influence

The European Club Association has worked with Uefa on a set of competition reforms that would see more matches, more security and – everyone hopes – more money

Something of the ridiculousness of modern elite football could be found on the streets of central Vienna on Monday night as hundreds of the game’s power-brokers were escorted across the city to make sure they didn’t miss their dinner. Oliver Kahn was hugger-mugger with Michael Ballack, Uefa president Alexander Ceferin was being pursued by the Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani, and Ajax’s Edwin van der Sar was trying to find out whether Roman Abramovich had been poisoned. They were all part of a cohort that resembled a bunch of exchange students as they followed a big sign saying “ECA” to a grand restaurant where the food was later described as “disappointing”.

The European Club Association is, depending on who you listen to, the secretive power broker at the heart of the continental game or a collaborative collective that seeks to make clubs’ voices heard amid the grinding bureaucracies of football’s governing bodies, Uefa in particular. This week they were holding their general congress in Sigmund Freud’s home town, a year on from apparently embracing their own death drive.

^ ^ Jamie Carragher explains why Harry Maguire will find it hard to kick-start his Manchester United career

Manchester United v Atletico Madrid - UEFA Champions League
Harry Maguire’s performances for Manchester United this season have been continually criticised (Photo: David S. Bustamante/Soccrates/Getty Images)

Jamie Carragher has explained why Harry Maguire will find it harder to bounce back from his current loss in form than past Manchester United and England players.

Maguire has received much criticism for his performances for United this season from fans and pundits alike, but that hit new highs on Tuesday night when the centre-back was routinely booed by home supporters during England’s 3-0 win over the Ivory Coast at Wembley.

While Gareth Southgate and his England players have condemned this action, it is unlikely to change supporters’ views on Maguire, who prior to this season was widely viewed as an excellent defender and a cult-hero after helping the Three Lions reach the World Cup semi-final in 2018 and the Euro’s final last summer.

Writing in his column for The Telegraph, the former Liverpool defender believes that the next few months are pivotal for the 29-year-old’s career, and unlike some former United and England heroes, he is facing a battle on all fronts.

He wrote: ‘England players have often taken abuse from their own crowd – including some of the greatest the country has ever produced. John Barnes, David Beckham and Wayne Rooney are among those who suffered for different reasons.

Jamie Carragher on Sky Sports
Jamie Carragher claims Maguire has it tougher than the likes of David Beckham and Wayne Rooney

‘The difference with them is the more criticism they took playing for their country, the more their club supporters loved them. They found sanctuary at their club and made the critics look foolish with world-class performances. There is no such comfort for Maguire.

‘It will hurt that the Old Trafford criticism has spread to Wembley.’

With the World Cup later this year, it seems unlikely that Three Lions regular Maguire will fail to make the plane to Qatar, but his place at United is less clear, with a new manager set to take over in the summer and as Carragher points out, his role as the Red Devils’ skipper is also under threat.

‘Maguire’s difficulty in turning it around at Old Trafford is his lack of authority in the United dressing room,’ he added. ‘Since last summer, Maguire has been looking over his shoulder amid a debate as to whether he or Cristiano Ronaldo should be captain.

‘Rather than reassert his leadership, he has fallen short. That has affected his performances.’

Nevertheless, Carragher, citing from personal experience, believes Maguire can turnaround his current predicament, writing: ‘There are always two options; accept defeat and go somewhere where you might feel more appreciated, or fight on to get the supporters back on side.

‘Only a strong character can recover from this, but such challenges are common during the course of a career.’

^ ^ ‘They’re not going to compete’ – Gary Neville explains why Mikel Arteta could leave Arsenal this summer

Gary Neville says Mikel Arteta may be forced to leave Arsenal
Gary Neville says Mikel Arteta may be forced to leave Arsenal (Pictures: Sky Sports/Getty)

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has explained why Mikel Arteta could decide to leave Arsenal this summer despite the recent progress at the Emirates.

Arsenal are the favourites to secure the final top-four spot in the Premier League, sitting three points above north London rivals Tottenham with ten games remaining.

A top-four finish would represent a remarkable turnaround in north London given Arteta’s side sat bottom of the Premier League after losing their first three matches of the season without scoring a goal.

But Neville believes this could be ‘as good as it gets’ for Arsenal and says Arteta may decide to leave the club this summer even if they finish fourth as the Gunners are ‘not going to compete’ with the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea.

‘I really like Mikel Arteta, I think he’s a brilliant coach. I think the team is fantastic in terms of the young players they’ve got,’ Neville said at a Sky Sports fan debate.

‘But it’s interesting when you’re in a cycle of a club and you depress the ambition and have a significant period of failure because you then get really happy about finishing fourth.

‘I found myself saying that about Manchester United. But it’s because of a depressed ambition.

Arsenal won the FA Cup under Arteta in 2020

‘I think Mikel Arteta is a good operator. My concern is if Arsenal finish fourth this season – which to be fair, I think is 50/50, I still think there’s a long way to in that race – but if they finish fourth, that’s in some ways as good as it gets.

‘You’ve got Pep [Guardiola], [Jurgen] Klopp, Man United, Chelsea, where can Arsenal go? They’re not going to compete.

‘Mikel Arteta is a brilliant coach, I love that we’re seeing a team that he’s getting the maximum out of, I can see exactly how he wants to play, we all can.

‘But he gets to fourth [and] if he was really hard about it, he’d probably say “right, that’s the best I can do there, I’m going now and getting my next job”.’

Arsenal finished just eighth in Arteta’s first season at the Emirates but he only arrived halfway through the campaign following Unai Emery’s sacking and also led the Gunners to the FA Cup trophy.

Arteta was seemingly fighting to save his job after another frustrating campaign last year but the team are now thriving, winning six of their last seven matches.

^ ^ Bayer Leverkusen rule out move for Arsenal, Tottenham and West Ham target Patrik Schick

Bayer 04 Leverkusen v SpVgg Greuther Fürth - Bundesliga
Patrik Schick has been in stunning form for Bayer Leverkusen this season (Picture: Getty Images)

Patrik Schick has attracted attention from a string of Premier League clubs, but Bayer Leverkusen chiefs have issued a strict hands-off warning to interested parties.

The 26-year-old is enjoying by far the best season of his career so far, netting 20 goals in just 20 Bundesliga games.

The Czech striker caught the eye at Euro 2020 last summer, netting five times for his country and boasts an impressive international record of 17 goals in 33 caps.

Understandably there has been plenty of attention from the Premier League in the tall, speedy and prolific striker, with the Sun crediting Arsenal, Tottenham, West Ham and even Manchester City with an interest in him.

Those clubs could test Leverkusen’s resolve with a huge bid, but the German club insists that their star striker is not for sale and the matter is not up for discussion.

Leverksuen CEO Fernando Carro said: ‘No, we’re not going to sell Patrik Schick, so there is no need to talk at all.

‘He feels very comfortable with us. We count on him in planning for the next few years.’

The Bundesliga side are in a good position, with Schick under contract until 2025 and as they are sitting third in the table, they have a good chance of offering him Champions League football next season.

The Czech’s future will depend on what offers come in, though, with Arsenal and Manchester City looking certain to bring in strikers over the summer and able to make big bids with huge wages.

Schick has already played in the Czech League, Serie A and Bundesliga and may want to add the Premier League to his CV.

^ ^ Mesut Ozil was ‘never the same’ after Santi Cazorla left Arsenal, reveals agent

Arsenal FC v Leicester City - Premier League
Ozil left Arsenal in 2021 (Picture: Getty)

Mesut Ozil was ‘never the same’ at Arsenal after Santi Cazorla left the club, according to the German’s agent.

Ozil won three FA Cup, scored 44 goals and provided 77 assists during his eight-year spell with the Gunners, joining the club from Real Madrid in 2013.

But the playmaker fell woefully out of favour during his final years at the club, frozen out by Mikel Arteta despite being the club’s biggest earner and going nine months without a single appearance before eventually leaving in January 2021 to join Fenerbahce.

Some of Ozil’s best spells at Arsenal came playing alongside Cazorla, who starred in the Gunners’ midfield following his arrival from Malaga.

The Spaniard however suffered an achilles injury in 2017 that would require eight surgeries and would at one point leave his career in severe doubt. Cazorla left north London in 2018, with Ozil’s agent Erkut Sogut revealing the departure took a major toll on his client.

Arsenal v Stoke City - Premier League
Ozil’s game suffered without the Spaniard in the team, says his agent (Picture: Getty)

‘He had Santi for a while and he loved him,’ Sogut told AFTV.

‘I think probably one of his most favourite players. Mesut is a smart, intelligent player, he reads the game and he is always looking. He loves to play with intelligent players.

‘If you’re a No.10 the one in front of you and the one behind you, a good striker and good No.6 who cleans it up and sees you and plays you the ball so you can give the final pass.

‘Santi is very smart, very intelligent and has great technique and that suited Mesut a lot to have him behind him.

‘When Santi left you could see it wasn’t the same any more, right away it changed.’

Cazorla was able to return to the game after his devastating injuries and spent two seasons back at Villarreal before joining Al Sadd in 2020.

Erik ten Hag is a ‘great’ manager and would be a superb appointment for Manchester United should the Red Devils opt to go for the Dutchman.

That’s according to Liverpool hero Dirk Kuyt, who says there’s no doubt about the ten Hag’s ability to compete at the very top.

United have interviewed ten Hag over the manager’s position and he’s believed to have impressed the board with his vision for the club.

One criticism over ten Hag is his supposed lack of English but Kuyt says he would be a ‘great’ appointment for United.

Dutch Eredivisie

Ten Hag is a great, experienced coach. He’s done his apprenticeship, if you like, with Bayern Munich’s second team, then Utrecht and now at Ajax,’ Kuyt told Goal.

‘He is a great manager who has improved himself so much, on and off the pitch.

‘I know some people were doubting his level of speaking English, his performance in front of the camera, but you see him growing every week as a manager, and I think he can do a great job at any top side in Europe.

‘His tactics, his way of thinking about football, is very interesting, and it would be great if he was to get an opportunity at a top side.’

Mauricio Pohettino is ten Hag’s main competitor for the job at Old Trafford and reports earlier this week say the Argentine has now spoken to United.

United want to conduct a thorough process, and plan on speaking to both Julen Lopetegui and Luis Enrique in the coming weeks.

^ ^ Chelsea duo Reece James and Callum Hudson-Odoi return to first-team training ahead of Brentford clash

James and Hudson-Odoi have recovered from knocks (Picture: Getty)

Chelsea have received a welcomed injury boost over the international break with Reece James and Callum Hudson-Odoi back in first-team training.

James suffered a hamstring injury at the end of 2021 that ruled him out him for the first three months of the year.

While he returned to the side with a goal against Burnley on 5 March, a fresh setback sidelined him once again, forcing him out of the England squad for friendly internationals against Switzerland and Ivory Coast.

Hudson-Odoi meanwhile has missed Chelsea’s last five games with an Achilles problem.

Both players were back in full training on Tuesday morning however, joined by the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Hakim Ziyech, Malang Sarr and fellow academy graduate Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

James and Hudson-Odoi are both likely to be in contention to feature in Chelsea’s first game back after the international break at home to Brentford on Saturday.

The Blues are in action seven times in April with their Champions League quarter-final games against Real Madrid falling either side of the Premier League trip to Southampton.

The Blues then head across town to Wembley for their FA Cup semi-final clash with Crystal Palace.

Chelsea have fallen off the pace in the race for the Premier League title and are now 10 points behind second place Liverpool.

Thomas Tuchel’s side hold a five-point lead over rivals Arsenal, who occupy fourth place.

^*^ Barcelona star Pedri opens up on partnership with Gavi

Barcelona starlet Pedri has been discussing his partnership with teammate Gavi.

After years of largely poor recruitment, losing Lionel Messi and ending up in a financial mess, Barcelona have been forced to look to youth to help revive their squad.

La Blaugrana have a number of promising young talents on their books at present, with the crown jewel most certainly Pedri.

The 19-year-old joined Barcelona in 2019 and, after spending a season back on loan with Las Palmas, has taken the Camp Nou by storm.

Pedri had a superb 2020/21 that ended with him being named as Euro 2020’s Young Player of the Tournament.

The teenager’s 2021/22 was then derailed by injury, but he has returned to action and is once again shining with Barca.

Barcelona midfielder Pedri on Gavi

Along with Pedri, Barcelona have another very promising young midfielder on their books.

That player is 17-year-old Gavi who has, despite his tender years, already featured of 36 occasions for La Blaugrana this term.

And Gavi, along with Pedri, is expected to form two third of Barca’s midfield for many years to come.

Now, the latter of that duo has been discussing his relationship with Gavi and his hopes for recreating the infamous Barcelona midfield pairing of Andreas Iniesta and Xavi Hernandez:

“Let’s hope we can be a duo like Xavi and Iniesta but it will tough to repeat what they did,” said Pedri before describing his relationship with his fellow teenage midfielder. “I have a special relationship with him and I really appreciate him, he has great potential,” he concluded.

^*^ Rio Ferdinand sends message to Manchester United over manager hunt

Rio Ferdinand has offered Manchester United some advice regarding their manager hunt.

This, of course, comes with the Red Devils still yet to appoint a permanent coach following the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The likes of Erik ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino have been the main names linked.

However, Rio Ferdinand has urged the Manchester outfit to seek out Thomas Tuchel amid Chelsea’s ongoing ownership issues:

“I’m taking Tuchel man, I don’t care,” admitted Ferdinand, speaking on the Vibe with Five Youtube channel. “If the roles were reversed and Man United were there and had Tuchel as a sitting duck at our football club, we are presuming he’s a sitting duck from the reports we are hearing.

“If that was the case and the roles were reversed, trust me, Roman and the empire would knock down the door. They wouldn’t even knock down the door, they’d run round the side and take him.

“Tuchel would be the one. He’s got the pedigree. He’s shown already that he can come into this league, he’s adapted straight away, he’s won the Champions League, he can galvanise a squad, he can get them playing. He can create a culture, create a togetherness. He’s got discipline.”

What has Tuchel said about taking the Manchester United job?

Tuchel was asked about links to the Manchester United job earlier this month, but the former Borussia Dortmund manager seemed quick to dismiss them:

“Do you feel me less committed or involved with this club,” Tuchel asked. “Absolutely not. I love to work for Chelsea and this club has everything it needs to make me happy.”

Of course, a lot could change in the next few months but, given the state Manchester United as a club find themselves in, it is hard to see why any properly top manager would wish to go there at present.

^*^ Aaron Ramsdale makes Arsenal captaincy claim

Arsenal no.1 Aaron Ramsdale has thrown his hat into the ring to become the Gunners’ new captain.

Arsenal, for many years now, have had little luck with their captains. The last two have been Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Granit Xhaka.

Xhaka would be booed off the field vs Crystal Palace whilst captain and appeared to snap back at the fans at the time.

Aubameyang then took the armband before being frozen out over disciplinary issues in December and then leaving for free in January.

Alexandre Lacazette is the current Arsenal captain but his contract is up in the summer and Mikel Arteta will likely need to pick a new skipper.

Ramsdale eyeing Arsenal captaincy

One man who believes he could do a good job is Aaron Ramsdale. When speaking about becoming Arsenal captain recently, Ramsdale had this to say:

“Listen, I’d take the responsibility but that’s down to the manager,” Ramsdale said.

“We’ve got a lot of strong characters, though, and a lot of people who I think would be good captains.

“Just to be told ‘you’re in a leadership role’ – I’d relish whatever. You never turn down a captaincy and I think I’d excel if I was given the armband, but that’s down to the boss.”

Elsewhere though, there has been some talk that Martin Odegaard could become captain.

When asked about this last month Mikel Arteta said: “He certainly has all the qualities to do that [to be captain], absolutely.

“Talking to his national team coach and how highly they speak of him. He walks through the corridor and everybody loves him.

“He is such a nice, humble guy and he leads with the way he is. It is very natural for him and that will come.”

^*^ ‘Different to other clubs’: how Barcelona Women left rivals behind

Before the European and Spanish champions play Real Madrid at a sold-out Camp Nou, we hear what lies behind their success

For a little while it looked as if the impossible might happen. It was half-time in the Champions League quarter-final at Valdebebas and Barcelona were losing. Not just the first leg, but for the first time: defeat would be their first against Real Madrid, the team built to be their rivals, and the first against anyone all season. It was March and they hadn’t even drawn yet – played 34, won 34 – but Olga Carmona’s early goal had them trailing.

Struggling too. This wasn’t the way it was supposed to be, Madrid more dynamic and deserving of the lead. “We weren’t happy,” Fridolina Rolfö says, “so we changed things.” Fourty-five minutes later, two from Alexia Putellas and one from Clàudia Pina completed a comeback. Barcelona had won but that wasn’t the news; the news was that they nearly hadn’t. “It was good for us to get that game,” Rolfö adds. “Hopefully we learned a lesson.”

^ ^ Barcelona president Joan Laporta hints at ‘completed’ deal for Chelsea ace Andreas Christensen

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has dropped a heavy hint that the club are set to sign Andreas Christensen on a free transfer after admitting the Catalans have already ‘completed’ a deal for a centre-back for next season.

The Dane is out of contract at Stamford Bridge in July and he’s yet to agree to an extension, despite repeated attempts from the Blues to better his salary.

The sanctions imposed on Roman Abramovich by the UK government earlier this month means Chelsea are unable to offer new contracts to players until a sale of the club goes through.

Christensen had already been minded to leave the club and he’s been free to sign pre-contract agreements with foreign clubs since January 1st.

Barcelona, with their financial constraints, have been keen to sweep up players coming to the end of their contracts and they’ve signed the likes of Eric Garcia, Sergio Aguero, Memphis Depay and Dani Alves for free in the last 18 months.

The Catalans have held extensive talks with Christensen’s representatives and Barcelona president Laporta has now confirmed that the club have agreed a deal to sign an unnamed centre-back, which is believed to be the Danish international.

‘We’ve completed two signings for the next season,’ said Laporta.

‘One is a midfielder, the other one is a centre-back.

‘But I’m not allowed to mention their names.’

Chelsea hope to find a new buyer for the club in the next month.

Abramovich wants around £2.5bn to sell the Blues, while all bids must show a plan to progress forward with plans to either modernise Stamford Bridge or to build a new stadium.
