Paul Merson believes Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire should be left out of the Manchester United side for their derby clash against Manchester City on Sunday.

Although Ronaldo is United’s top scorer across all competitions this season with 15 goals, the Portugal international has endured a recent goal drought.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has found the back of the net just once in his last 10 games and was dropped to the bench for the recent draw with Burnley.

Meanwhile, Maguire was left out of the starting XI for the goalless draw against Wolves, and recent reports have claimed some United players are privately questioning his place in the side.

Reacting to that speculation, Merson told Sky Sports: ‘That’s not nice, I don’t like that because Maguire comes across as a top bloke and as a good professional who looks after the players, he’s not really worried about himself, he’s a team player.’

However, Arsenal hero Merson thinks Maguire and Ronaldo should both be omitted for the meeting with City at the Etihad.

‘For me, I don’t think he [Maguire] plays in this game.

‘I would play [Marcus] Rashford and [Anthony] Elanga in this game in my opinion.

‘If they’ve got any chance of winning Man United they have to play on the counter-attack with plenty of pace, skill and energy.

‘I would leave Ronaldo out of this game.’
