Chelsea have reportedly blamed a technology glitch for Hakim Ziyech’s failed January move to Paris Saint-Germain on deadline day.
The 29-year-old agreed personal terms with PSG over a loan move to the French capital but the deal broke down in dramatic fashion.
Chelsea and PSG were expected to finalise an agreement but the documentation to complete the transfer was not submitted in time.
Reports in France have claimed Chelsea sent the incorrect documentation three times.
‘Last night was an absolute shambles,’ an unnamed source in Paris reportedly said.
‘Chelsea will not darken PSG’s doorstep ever again. This is not how you do business or treat a player.’
Ziyech was in Paris on deadline day preparing to be unveiled as a PSG player, but reluctantly returned to London and will finish the season at Chelsea.
Chelsea are now claiming that a ‘technology glitch’ was responsible for the failed move, according to The Telegraph.
Ziyech was left ‘upset’ after the late drama – with the Morocco winger having been keen to leave Stamford Bridge during the January transfer window – after only starting four Premier League games this season.
He was was held in high regard when he completed a £33m move from Ajax in 2020 but has flattered to deceive in west London and wanted to revive his career elsewhere.
Ziyech was linked with a number of clubs in January, with Everton, Newcastle United and Roma considering moves for the Chelsea outcast.
Blues boss Graham Potter now faces the task of reintegrating Ziyech into his first-team squad, with Chelsea returning to action on Friday against London rivals Fulham.
Chelsea, meanwhile, have been incredibly busy in January, bringing in eight new players and spending over £300m.
The Blues smashed the British transfer record to bring in Argentina’s World Cup winning midfielder Enzo Fernandez to Stamford Bridge from Portuguese club Benfica in a deal worth a whopping £106.8m, which Chelsea confirmed on Wednesday.
American owner Todd Boehly, who took over from Roman Abramovich in the summer, has also splashed the cash on seven other signings in January as Ukraine international Mykhailo Mudryk arrived from Shakhtar Donetsk for £88.5m.
Benoit Badiashile, Noni Madueke and Malo Gusto were brought in for a combined total of £90.3m from Monaco, PSV and Lyon while David Datro Fofana and Andrey Santos were signed for undisclosed fees and Joao Felix came in on loan from Atletico Madrid, with Chelsea paying £10m for his services for six months.
