Erling Haaland might be the best centre-forward on the planet but even he has nightmare moments in front of goal, as his miss proved in the Manchester derby on Sunday.
Manchester City found themselves 1-0 down to their local rivals thanks to a stunning Marcus Rashford strike from distance just eight minutes into the contest at the Etihad.
The Premier League champions unsurprisingly responded well and were really turning the screw on their visitors late in the first half.
Typically impressive build-up play saw the ball clipped to Phil Foden who nodded it back across goal to find Haaland bursting into the six-yard box with an open goal in front of him.
The Norwegian jumped and tried to side foot it into the net but somehow managed to scoop the ball over the bar, despite being completely unchallenged and with goalkeeper Andre Onana helpless.
‘Oh my gosh! What has he just done?!’ Gary Neville questioned on Sky Sports commentary.
‘They’ve been working it and working it and working it, Manchester City, and finally they get perfection apart from that.
‘I cannot believe that Erling Haaland has put that over the bar.
‘He missed his chances against Chelsea a couple of weeks ago. He can’t believe it, Pep Guardiola.
‘Does Haaland try and put it into the top of the net? Is he trying to be clever? It’s a startling thing that we’ve just seen.’
Roy Keane was equally confused by the glaring error from the prolific striker, saying: ‘This is unbelievable. What a world-class striker he is. I really can’t explain it.
‘He just has to head it in or just a softer touch. He’s probably thinking, “I’ve already scored.” Unbelievable.’
