Virgil van Dijk struggled for words as he reacted to Jurgen Klopp’s final match in charge of Liverpool, but said that the outgoing manager ‘deserves every bit of love that he’s getting.’

Klopp’s last game in charge of the Reds saw them beat Wolves 2-0 at Anfield thanks to goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Jarell Quansah.

It was an routine win but far from a normal afternoon at Anfield, with emotions running high as the German brought to an end his nine-year stay at the club.

There was a mosaic unveiled by the fans in the stands before the game and an especially rousing rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone.

After the match Klopp did his best to hug everyone he possibly could, including Van Dijk, with the pair enjoying a special and very successful relationship during their time in the city.

The centre-back was clearly moved as he spoke at the end of the contest, saying Klopp is fully deserving of the emotional outpouring at Anfield.

‘I’ve got no words, it’s a very emotional day,’ Van Dijk told Sky Sports. ‘Liverpool is Liverpool, it’s special.

‘It was always going to be a tough afternoon for everyone, we wanted to win the game, that we do our job and now we can be very emotional after the game and we will be.

‘It’s been very difficult, but we did it and I’m proud of it. You can’t prepare for these kind of situations, moments, but overall it’s been a good day and he deserves every bit of love that he’s getting.
