The Champions League returned this week with European heavyweights Bayern Munich taking on Scottish champions Celtic.

Bayern, spearheaded by England captain Harry Kane, travel to Glasgow on Wednesday night for the first leg of their play-off tie.

As one of the competition’s favourites, there has been much attention on Bayern this season and fans have noticed something strange about the German giants.

During the Champions League league phase, Bayern had four home games at the Allianz Arena but did not play in their iconic red home kit for any of them.

Instead the likes of Michael Olise and Jamal Musiala have only worn the black away kit or beige third colours throughout the competition.

It was not clear why this bizarre decision was made, however German publication BILD now claim that European football’s governing body UEFA had taken issue with Bayern’s 2024/25 home kit and banned it.

Why have UEFA banned Bayern Munich’s home kit?

According to BILD, the problem is to do with the dark numbering and lettering on Bayern Munich’s red kit.

UEFA believe it does not offer enough contrast for viewers, therefore violating their visibility regulations.

It is said, Bayern have been made aware of the issue and are expected to make modifications to their kit, with the black numbers and letters to be re-printed in white.

This changes will not be made in time for the trip to Celtic Park so Bayern will wear their away kit, despite there being no colour clash between the Bavarian’s red shirts and Celtic’s famous green and white hoops.

It remains to be seen whether Vincent Kompany’s side will finally get to don their home kit for the second leg in Munich next Tuesday.

Bayern are eight points clear at the top of the Bundesliga and are largely expected to sweep aside Celtic in the play-offs after just missing out on automatic qualification for the last-16.

Should they indeed win, they will face a tough last-16 clash against either German champions Bayer Leverkusen or Spanish giants Atletico Madrid.
