Liverpool have submitted a formal request to the referees’ governing body PGMOL to hear the audio from the VAR team from Saturday’s controversial 2-1 defeat to Tottenham.

The Merseysiders were reduced to 10 men in the first half in north London when Curtis Jones’ challenge was upgraded to a red card, though they thought they had taken the lead moments later.

Mohamed Salah slipped in Luis Diaz who raced clear and fired an excellent effort into the far bottom corner, only for his celebrations to be cut short by the linesman’s flag.

After a very quick VAR check, play restarted with a free-kick to Spurs but it quickly became clear that a huge blunder had taken place with replays showing Diaz was clearly onside.

PGMOL released a statement shortly after full-time saying a ‘significant human error’ had taken place and it later transpired that VAR Darren England had mistakenly thought the goal had been given on the pitch, with his ‘check complete’ confirming that Diaz was onside.

But the on-field team, led by referee Simon Hooper, interpreted that comment to mean the on-field decision of offside was correct and they were unable to correct the decision once play had restarted.

Liverpool issued a strongly worded statement on Sunday evening saying they would ‘explore a range of options’ in order to ‘escalate and resolve’ the matter.

Now they have made a formal request to PGMOL to receive the audio between the officials from Saturday’s game in order to hear for themselves how the blunder occurred.

According to The Athletic, senior figures at Liverpool believe it is a ‘crucial step’ to establish how and why the goal was incorrectly disallowed and to ensure they receive the ‘full transparency’ they demanded in their statement.

The audio communication between the officials is actually broadcast live – though not on TV due to FIFA rules – and would have been heard by commentators working on the match, with none reporting any foul play.

PGMOL have released audio of incidents in the past, including embarrassing blunders such as the decision not to penalise Manchester United’s Andre Onana earlier this season, and there is an expectation that they will release the audio.

VAR Darren England as well as his assistant, Dan Cook, were both stood down from their respective refereeing duties following the error and Liverpool are also thought to want an explanation as to why they had officiated in the UAE just 48 hours before the match at Tottenham.

Liverpool have also appealed against Jones’ red card in the first half of Saturday’s match, which carries a three-match ban, though they are unlikely to be successful.

^ ^ Gary Neville hits out at Liverpool over ‘dangerous’ statement on VAR mistake

Gary Neville has criticised Liverpool’s decision to release a statement slamming the VAR mistake in Saturday’s defeat to Tottenham and believes the wording is ‘dangerous’.

The Merseysiders were reduced to 10 men in the first half of their visit to north London when Curtis Jones’ challenge was upgraded to a red card, though they thought they had taken the lead shortly afterwards despite their numerical disadvantage.

Luis Diaz raced clear and finished emphatically only for the linesman’s flag to be raised, though the Colombian appeared to be onside, and after a brief VAR check the game restarted with a free-kick to Spurs.

But it later transpired that the VAR team thought the on-field decision had been a goal and when they said ‘check complete’ it was to confirm there was no offside, though the on-field team interpreted the message as Diaz being offside.

When play restarted it was no longer possible for VAR to intervene and Tottenham took the lead shortly afterwards through Son Heung-min.

Cody Gakpo netted an equaliser just before the break and his replacement, Diogo Jota, was later sent off for two bookable offences before Joel Matip netted a last-gasp own goal to seal a 2-1 victory for the home side.

Jurgen Klopp was diplomatic about the incident afterwards having been informed that a ‘significant human error’ had occurred, but Liverpool released a damning statement on Sunday evening in which they called for ‘escalation and resolution’ and said they would be ‘exploring a range of options’.

Former Manchester United defender Neville feels Liverpool’s statement has crossed a line with it’s ‘vague and aggressive’ wording and believes the apology issued by PGMOL shortly after full-time should be sufficient.

Writing on social media platform X, Neville said: ‘Jurgen Klopp handled the situation well last night after the game. Most football fans will have had empathy with what happened and recognised it was wrong!

‘However, Liverpool’s statement tonight is a mistake! Talk of exploring all options (what does that mean!!!) and sporting integrity are dangerous phrases along with being vague and aggressive.

‘Sorry we f***ed up was enough!! I said this last night. Sorry should be respected and not undervalued.

‘This is a snap reaction that can always be wrong but I feel strongly about it.’

Neville also retweeted several posts criticising both Liverpool’s statement as well as the very application of VAR since it was introduced, while he dismissed a suggestion from a Liverpool fan that there needed to be repercussions, saying: ‘What would that look like mate? It’s a f*** up. We’ve all done it.’

Cody Gakpo is set to be sidelined until after the international break after picking up an injury against Tottenham on Saturday, with Liverpool facing a potential selection crisis against Brighton.

The Merseysiders were beaten 2-1 by Spurs in north London but were reduced to nine men in the contest, with the match overshadowed by a huge VAR error which saw Luis Duiz’s first-half strike incorrectly ruled out.

In addition to both Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota seeing red, Gakpo – who netted just before the half-time break – was forced off at half-time with an injury.

The Dutchman appeared to pull up after striking the ball for Liverpool’s equaliser, though the injury was the result of an earlier challenge from Destiny Udogie when his foot got caught beneath the sliding Spurs defender and he appeared to roll his ankle.

According to reports in the Dutch media, Gakpo’s injury is not a serious one but he will still be sidelined for several weeks.

He will be unavailable for the Netherlands’ upcoming European Championship qualification matches against France and Greece – played on October 13 and October 16 respectively – but should be back in action later this month.

Unfortunately for Liverpool, that means Gakpo will miss Thursday’s Europa League match against Union Saint-Gilloise as well as the away trip to face Brighton on Sunday.

To compound Jurgen Klopp’s selection issues, the Merseysiders will also be without Jones and Jota who will both be serving suspensions – the former could even face a three-game ban for serious foul play.

Asked about Gakpo following Saturday’s match, Klopp said: ‘The biggest problem of the game, to be honest… before Cody Gakpo scored, we got a free-kick and he got injured and he is now with a brace limping down the corridor.

‘That’s my biggest problem, to be honest, in this moment. We lost two [to red cards] and maybe a third player – really bad, really bad. So, yes, that’s something we have to deal with obviously.’

Asked if the injury for Gakpo was a bad one, Klopp added: ‘Possibly, I don’t know.

‘He wore a brace. He scored a goal but afterwards, but after that shot he felt it even more. It was from the foul before.’

Jota was a half-time replacement for Gakpo meaning Darwin Nunez is likely to come into the starting XI for the trip to Brighton next weekend, though Klopp will be left with precious few attacking, game-changing options on his bench.

The Merseysiders say sporting integrity was ‘undermined’ on Saturday (Picture: Getty)

Liverpool have released a statement slamming the VAR error that resulted in Luis Diaz having a goal incorrectly ruled out for offside against Tottenham and say they will now ‘explore a range of options’.

The Merseysiders were reduced to 10 men in north London on Saturday when Curtis Jones saw his challenge upgraded to a red card by referee Simon Hooper after an intervention from VAR.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Liverpool thought they had taken the lead when Mohamed Salah slipped in Diaz and the Colombian rifled into the far corner.

Unfortunately the linesman’s flag was raised for offside and after a brief check by VAR the game restarted with a free-kick to Tottenham.

However, it quickly became clear that an error had been made with Diaz clearly onside and refereeing body PGMOL released a statement after the match confirming that a ‘significant human error’ had occurred.

Spurs went on to win the match 2-1 thanks to a stoppage-time own goal from Joel Matip, with Diogo Jota also sent off in the second half after two yellow cards as the visitors were reduced to nine men.

It later transpired that VAR official Darren England mistakenly thought the on-field decision had been a goal so, after confirming that Diaz was onside, said ‘check complete’ to the on-field team – which they interpreted as meaning the goal had been offside.

While Liverpool appreciate PGMOL coming clean about the embarrassing mix-up, they have hit out at the usage of VAR and lack of intervention following the restart and say they will now explore options to ‘escalate and resolve’ the matter.

A statement on Sunday evening read: ‘Liverpool Football Club acknowledges PGMOL’s admission of their failures last night.

‘It is clear that the correct application of the laws of the game did not occur, resulting in sporting integrity being undermined.

‘We fully accept the pressures that match officials work under but these pressures are supposed to be alleviated, not exacerbated, by the existence and implementation of VAR.

‘It is therefore unsatisfactory that sufficient time was not afforded to allow the correct decision to be made and that there was no subsequent intervention.

‘That such failings have already been categorised as “significant human error” is also unacceptable. Any and all outcomes should be established only by the review and with full transparency.

‘This is vital for the reliability of future decision-making as it applies to all clubs with learnings being used to make improvements to processes in order to ensure this kind of situation cannot occur again.

‘In the meantime, we will explore the range of options available, given the clear need for escalation and resolution.’

Both the VAR and assistant VAR from Saturday’s game, Darren England and Dan Cook respectively, have been stood down by PGMOL following their blunder; the former was removed as fourth official for Sunday’s clash between Nottingham Forest and Brentford while the latter was removed as assistant referee for Fulham vs Chelsea on Monday night.

^ ^ Man Utd star Lisandro Martinez set for second round of surgery on his injury

Manchester United star Lisandro Martinez is set for a second operation on his broken metatarsal on Monday, according to reports.

The Red Devils confirmed on Friday that centre-back Martinez is set for an ‘extended period’ on the sidelines in the latest injury blow to Erik ten Hag, which could reportedly last for up to three months.

The Dutchman is already without several defenders with Sergio Reguilon, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia all currently injured.

According to the Daily Mail, United are trying to get Martinez back fit as soon as possible and after undergoing an operation on his broken metatarsal, he is set for a second round of surgery in a bid to cure the problem.

Martinez first picked up the injury back in April – which ruled him out for 11 weeks – and it has flared up again, with United determined to stop another repeat after he got through games against Brighton and Bayern Munich by taking painkillers.

United lost 1-0 at home to Crystal Palace on Saturday with a makeshift back four that saw midfielder Sofyan Amrabat deployed as a left-back.

Ten Hag, meanwhile, has hit out at the amount of fixtures his side are being forced to play after various players in his squad picked up injury problems.

Speaking specially about Martinez’s injury on Friday, Ten Hag said: ‘We did a proper diagnosis, in Argentina as well, but now it came out that there was a problem.

‘That’s very sad, for him and the team, because he was not 100 per cent fit. I think it was a big difference the Licha Martinez in the last games and the Licha Martinez we have seen in the first season here.

‘He will add to the team, a really strong contributor to our levels and if already one player drops a level, the team performance will be lower.’

^ ^ Victor Osimhen breaks his silence over Napoli TikTok videos mocking him

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen has at last broken his silence on the controversial videos posted on the club’s official TikTok account in which he was mocked in two offensive clips.

The Nigeria international is reportedly furious with the Italian club over the videos – which have since been deleted – with his agent even threatening legal action.

One of the clips posted on the social media app mocked Osimhen for missing a penalty late last month while another labelled him a ‘coconut’, which has been viewed as a racial slur.

Napoli finally issued a statement on Thursday in which they described the striker as a ‘treasure of the club’ but stopped short of offering a formal apology.

Osimhen is believed to be upset with the way Napoli have handled the matter but, as he addressed the furore for the first time on Sunday, distanced fans from the videos and thanked them for their support.

In a statement posted on social media, he wrote: ‘Coming to the city of Naples in 2020 was a wonderful decision for me.

‘The people of Napoli have shown me so much love and kindness, and I will not allow anyone to come between us.

‘The passion of the people of Naples fuels my fire to always play with my heart and soul, and the love for the badge is unwavering as I wear it with pride.

‘The accusations against people of Naples are untrue. I have a lot of friends that are Napolitans and have become part of my family and everyday life.

‘I appreciate Nigerians and everyone for leading their voices to support and reach out to me.

‘I’m forever grateful. Let’s support unity, respect and understanding. FORZA NAPOLI SEMPRE.’

Osimhen is believed to have received a private apology from Napoli’s board of directors while the club’s social media executive has now stepped down from his role.

The forward refused to celebrate after scoring against Udinese and Lecce in recent matches and also snubbed the opportunity to take a penalty against the latter. He will next be in action on Tuesday night when Napoli take on Real Madrid in the Champions League.
