Chelsea’s controversial goal against Arsenal in Sunday’s Premier League summit meeting was checked and cleared by VAR despite fans spotting what they claimed was clear infringement.

The Blues made light of their numerical disadvantage, a consequence of Moises Caicedo’s red card challenge, at the second half and took the lead in the 48th minute.

There appeared to be little controversial about Chalobah’s near post header which looped up and over a stranded David Raya and evaded Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapie who were stationed closer to the goalline.

Upon closer inspection, however, it appeared that Enzo Fernandez was standing in an offside position at the moment the Chelsea centre-half connected with Reece James’ perfectly flighted corner.

The presence of the Blues’ midfielder, it could have been argued, represented a distraction and prevented his opponents from making attempts to clear the ball from danger.

According to the BBC, however, the VAR did check the goal and deemed that Fernandez, despite following the trajectory of the ball and his close proximity to Mosquera, was not enough of a distraction to rule the goal out.

The nature of Chelsea’s goal was far from the only controversial moment of a heated London derby.

When can VAR deem a player to be offside?

Under the rules of IFAB (International Football Association Board), the game’s lawmakers, a player can be offside if they:

  • Prevent an opponent from being able to play the ball
  • Challenge an opponent for the ball
  • Make an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball.

Should Chelsea's goal have been ruled out?

  • Yes - clear offside Check
  • No - the VAR got it spot on Check

While few would argue with the decision to overturn Anthony Taylor’s initial award of a yellow card for Caicedo’s foul on Mikel Merino, Chelsea felt aggrieved that Hincapie wasn’t given his marching orders shortly afterwards.

Challenging with Chalobah in an aerial duel, the Ecuador international caught the Chelsea centre-half on the side of the cheek and he was left with a swollen cheek.

Enzo Maresca was asked to comment on post-match quotes by his captain Reece James, who suggested Hincapie should have been shown a red for the challenge.

Maresca replied: ‘I think Reece is right. But they (officials) decide. I just said there, he asked me about Moises’ red card. It’s a red card, but why was Bentancur’s against Reece not a red card when we were at Spurs away? So us, as a manager, we struggle to understand why they judge in a different way.

‘Moises’ is a red card, yes. Bentancur’s is a red card, yes. Why don’t they give him a red card? It’s just that we struggle to understand. The reality is that it’s a red card. But why do they judge it differently?

‘And the Trevoh one, I asked the referee, he said to me that it was not an elbow. So, this is what they said. (He had a) black eye, with ice at half-time. But they judge in different way.’

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher, however, maintained that a yellow card represented sufficient punishment and the damage done to Chalobah’s face should not have influenced the referee’s decision.

He said: ‘I think this is a yellow card. You have to be careful not to be seduced by looking at [Chalobah’s] cheek. You have to judge the challenge.

‘Hincapie has leapt and used his arm as leverage, he hasn’t swung his elbow or used it as a weapon.

‘It is a flailing arm and an unfortunate injury, but it is a reckless challenge, not a challenge where he has gone in to hurt him.’

^ ^ Why Arsenal will be hit with huge FA fine after Chelsea draw

Chelsea were down to 10 men but it is Arsenal that will receive a fine for their conduct after the 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The feisty London derby ended level after Trevoh Chalobah put the home side ahead and Mikel Merino equalised for the visitors.

Both goals came in the second half after a red card for Blues midfielder Moises Caicedo before the interval.

The Ecuadorian was initially booked for his late challenge on Merino, but after VAR intervened it was upgraded to red and he was dismissed.

Other than Caicedo’s red, Chelsea only received one other card in the match, with Marc Cucurella picking up a booking.

In contrast, six Arsenal players were shown yellow cards and that is set to hit the club in the pocket.

FA rules dictate that if a team receives six or more yellow cards in a single match, the club will be fined £25,000.

Martin Zubimendi, Riccardo Calafiori, Piero Hincapie and Cristhian Mosquera were all booked for the Gunners, as were substitutes Viktor Gyokeres and Myles Lewis-Skelly.

It was an unusual day for the Gunners on this front as they have been one of the most disciplined teams in the top flight so far this season.

The six yellow cards at Stamford Bridge took their tally for the campaign to 18, with only Newcastle (13) and Manchester United (16) receiving fewer bookings.

Bournemouth have picked up the most yellow cards with 35, ahead of Brighton on 33.

Caicedo’s red card is Chelsea’s fourth of the Premier League season, with no other team picking up more than two and Arsenal yet to have a player sent-off.

The Blues have also received a red card in the Champions League this, with Joao Pedro sent-off against Benfica, but Maresca said there would be no punishment for his ill-disciplined players.

Manchester United v Chelsea - Premier League

‘I’m not that kind of manager to punish players,’ he said in October. ‘I don’t think it’s the right way to do things. I prefer to help them to understand, and then do the right things. They are all different kinds of red cards, but if you concede four or five it’s something that we have to improve.

‘I have four kids and when they do something wrong, I don’t punish them. I try to teach them to do the right things. I try to treat the players in the same way.

‘I think the players have a system inside the changing room, so a fine is something that they manage.’

^ ^ Jamie Carragher sends warning to ‘daft’ Moises Caicedo after Arsenal red card

Moises Caicedo must improve his decision-making after his ‘daft’ tackle on Mikel Merino deservedly saw him shown a red card, believes Jamie Carragher.

The Chelsea midfielder was initially booked for his late, high challenge on the Arsenal man in Sunday’s London derby.

However, VAR intervened and the Ecuadorian was rightfully dismissed for the studs-up challenge which missed the ball and landed hard on the Spaniard’s ankle.

The game was goalless at the time and ended 1-1, with Trevoh Chalobah putting the home side ahead before an equaliser from Merino.

Carragher has partially defended Caicedo, saying it was understandable he was pumped up for the big derby and does not believe he is a ‘nasty’ player.

But the Liverpool legend has seen similar from the 24-year-old before and says this was another example of a challenge he did not need to make.

‘He was really pumped up, I think we saw that right from the start of the game. I think the whole talk this week of [Declan] Rice vs Caicedo maybe got to him, understandably so,’ Carragher told Sky Sports.

Chelsea v Arsenal - Premier League
Mikel Merino was on the wrong end of the extremely poor tackle (Picture: Getty Images)

‘It’s a huge game, and he ends up getting himself involved in a challenge. Yes, it’s a red card, but it’s just daft to get involved in a tackle like that. He doesn’t need to.

‘He’s a brilliant player. He wins the ball back fantastically well, but I think he does have a tendency where he can look clumsy with some of the angles he can come in with, and I’m quite surprised that this is only his first red card.’

Carragher recalls a poor Caicedo challenge on Liverpool’s Ryan Gravenberch in the 2024 Carabao Cup final, which ultimately went unpunished, but saw the Dutchman stretchered off.

Like Sunday’s red card, it was a tackle in the middle of the pitch and the Reds hero says Caicedo must learn on when it is worth risking diving in.

FBL-ENG-LCUP-CHELSEA-LIVERPOOL

‘I remember a challenge in the Carabao Cup final against Gravenberch a couple of years ago as well,’ Carragher continued. ‘It’s not because he’s a nasty player but that was a case in point really, where he ends up facing his own goal to win a challenge, where basically he’s got someone else coming behind him, and he just doesn’t need to get involved.

‘He’s just got to be careful with that. He’s a fantastic player, but he definitely needs to learn from that. I’m sure the manager will speak to him if he’s come out and said it was a definite red card, and that’s really good to hear.’

Blues boss Enzo Maresca did indeed agree that it was a challenge warranting a red card, but he questioned the consistency of the refereeing.

Chelsea won 1-0 at Tottenham on November 1 and Maresca recalls a similar challenge from Rodrigo Bentancur on Reece James which did not lead to a sending off.

‘It’s a red card. But why Bentancur against Reece was not red card when we played Spurs away?’ Maresca questioned.

‘So as managers, we struggle to understand why they judge in a different way.

‘Moi is a red card, yes. Bentancur is red card, yes. Why don’t they give them [both] red cards? It’s just that we struggle to understand.

‘The reality is that it’s red card. But why they judge in different way?’

From Stamford Bridge, Metro’s Ben Fleming breaks down the winners and losers from Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal.

Caicedo sees Red

The big midfield match-up between Rice and Caicedo fizzled out before half-time when the latter was sent off for a poor challenge on Merino. The Ecuadorian was solid up until that point, but his red card stunted what had been an impressive first half from the hosts.

Estevao shows his age

Estevao lit up Stamford Bridge in midweek against Barcelona but spurned one golden opportunity and was otherwise kept quiet by Calafiori before making way at the break. Perhaps a sign from Chelsea fans to not expect the world from this mercurial teenager just yet.

James delivers a captain’s performance

A true captain’s display from James in front of his home fans. Ran the show in midfield, even before Caicedo’s departure, and continued in that vein after the break, providing the assist for Chalobah’s goal with a superb set-piece delivery.

Chelsea match ratings: Sanchez 7, Gusto 7, Fofana 5, Chalobah 7, Cucurella 7, James 9, Caicedo 3, Estevao 5, Enzo 6, Neto 7, Joao Pedro 6. Subs: Garnacho 6, Delap 6.

Merino the makeshift no more

Chelsea v Arsenal - Premier League
Mikel Merino levelled for Arsenal (Picture: Getty)

Viktor Gyokeres was a welcome return to the Arsenal bench, but might he have to wait for his opportunity? Mikel Merino continues to exceed expectations leading the line, and showed true striker’s instinct to ghost behind Fofana and head Arsenal level.

Hincapie up for the fight

Starting his second successive league game, it’s clear to see what Arsenal saw in Hincapie. The left-footed centre-back is rough around the edges, but a bundle of aggression in both boxes, and virtually licked his lips with enjoyment after dispossessing Neto inside his own box.

Arsenal match ratings: Raya 6, Timber 7, Mosquera 6, Hincapie 7, Calafiori 7, Rice 7, Zubimendi 6, Eze 6, Saka 7, Martinelli 6, Merino 8. Subs: Lewis-Skelly 7, Madueke 6, Odegaard 6, Gyokeres 6.

Caicedo’s red card was his first in 130 Premier League appearances, while he has picked up 36 yellow cards in that time.

He will now be suspended for three games, meaning he will miss Premier League clashes with Leeds, Bournemouth and Everton.

However, he will be able to play against Atalanta in the Champions League on December 9 as the ban does not extend to European competition.

^ ^ What Arsenal must learn as Chelsea draw shows how Premier League title race will be decided

Chelsea v Arsenal - Premier League
Arsenal were forced to settle for a point against ten-man Chelsea (Picture: Getty)

After the physically and emotionally testing games against Tottenham and Bayern Munich, perhaps Arsenal would have been happy to settle for a point against title-rivals Chelsea.

And yet, as Mikel Arteta reflected on Arsenal’s 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge, it is clear that he thought his side left something out there in Sunday’s feisty London derby.

‘I think overall it’s been a really positive week because the difficulty was immense,’ the Spaniard began in his post-match press conference.

‘But I have this flavour that today we should have and we could have won the game and we haven’t. That’s a learning point from it.’

That, in part, will be down to the nearly 60 minutes that the Gunners played against ten men after Moises Caicedo was shown a straight red for a reckless challenge on Mikel Merino.

In a game largely devoid of clear-cut chances, it was Chelsea who had the better of the proceedings in the early stages, with Estevao blazing over with an opportunity from 12 yards out inside the first 20 minutes.

But even after Caicedo’s dismissal, Maresca’s side did not go into their shell as they had done in previous matches when going down to ten men. Sure, they ceded possession to the visitors, but they also showed bravery, breaking with a regular threat and even taking the lead through Trevoh Chalobah before Mikel Merino’s equaliser 11 minutes later.

Chelsea v Arsenal - Premier League

After Caicedo’s red in the 38th minute, Chelsea had as many shots (eight) as Arsenal in the remaining two-thirds of the game, and ended the match as only the second team to record more than ten shots on Arsenal’s goal in the league this season.

The Gunners, meanwhile, struggled to impose their usual control on the game, perhaps not helped by the metronomic Martin Zubimendi making way on a yellow card before the hour mark.

‘Two teams very willing to win, and not much football,’ Arteta conceded post-match. He was right.

But that lack of football created a bit of unwanted history for Arteta’s side as they failed to win a league game in which their opponents received a first half red card for the first time since August 2010.

‘We managed to get some good spells without having too much momentum and we score a great goal, and after that, we had two or three big chances but lacked certain detail, especially in the manner we attacked, and especially in certain positions,’ he added.

A hallmark of Arteta’s tenure in north London has been his side’s remarkable record against the ‘big six’. And barring an otherworldly free-kick from Dominic Szobozslai at Anfield, Arsenal would still be unbeaten against those sides this campaign.

Chelsea v Arsenal - Premier League
Enzo Maresca’s side stuck to their task against Arsenal despite Moises Caicedo’s sending off (Picture: Getty)

But a draw against ten-man Chelsea on Sunday, combined with the below-par performances against both Manchester clubs and the defeat to Liverpool earlier in the season, points to an Arsenal side that are yet to produce their best in the league when the stakes are at their highest.

Perhaps next weekend’s trip to the Midlands to take on the in-form and fourth-place Aston Villa offers the perfect opportunity to silence those doubts.

The Champions League mauling of Bayern Munich certainly shows a team that is capable, but Arteta’s side must soon find that statement performance in the league to ensure the chasing pack doesn’t gain any more encouragement behind them.

Title race could prove a survival of the fittest

Both Arteta and Maresca may want a day or two to recharge and reflect, but no such rest is afforded at this hectic time of the season.

Arsenal and Chelsea now face another run of three games within seven days, pushing their squads to the limit in what has already been a gruelling start to the season.

Arsenal were able to welcome back Viktor Gyokeres and Gabriel Jesus to their bench, but an injury to William Saliba in training meant the Gunners named a starting lineup without the Frenchman or the also-injured Gabriel Magalhaes for just the second time since August 2021.

Piero Hincapie and Cristhian Mosquerad deputised admirably on Sunday, perhaps a vindication of Arsenal’s front-footed squad building over the summer after seeing last season’s title charge derailled by injuries.

Chelsea v Arsenal - Premier League
Reece James was superb on Sunday but might not be able to start in midweek (Picture: Getty)

‘Our depth has been tested since pre-season, because we lost six or seven players constantly out of the squad, Arteta said. ‘But I have no doubts with the squad we have and the mentality every player has.’

A three-match ban for Caicedo will test Chelsea’s squad depth, too. Romeo Lavia and Dario Essugo remain injured, while James’s chequered injury past means he might not be risked in midweek against Leeds after playing the full 90 on Sunday.

Sunday’s match was evidence yet again that this is going to prove an intense and physically demanding league season. Long balls, long throws and winning duels are back in vogue, and teams will have to push themselves to the limit to keep up.

One thing that cannot be doubted is Chelsea’s credentials to be in that race. Even after his side’s draw with the league leaders, Maresca was keen to kick any title talk into the long grass. But another impressive performance against a big side showed a young team that has already grown and learned from its past mistakes.

‘Arsenal tonight, Barcelona the other day, Liverpool, PSG, these kind of games, for sure, they give to the players, you know, the confidence to grow and to believe,’ Maresca admitted post-match.

This year might not serve up the body-beautiful football that title races between Manchester City and Liverpool produced in years gone by, but the survival-of-the-fittest slugfest that has replaced it could be just as intriguing.
