Mikel Arteta flew to Denver, Colorado on Tuesday to hold emergency talks with Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke over the club’s transfer business.
The Gunners have spent much of the window targeting Fiorentina striker Dusan Vlahovic and Arteta had been given significant funds to make a move for the Serbian.
However, the 21-year-old is on the cusp of joining Juventus in a deal worth £67m and Real Sociedad ace Alexander Isak – who has been identified as an alternative target – would rather stay in Spain.
That leaves the club in a difficult position with such little time left in the transfer market, particularly as the Gunners are yet to offload Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Arteta was therefore in the States to discuss both issues, with Kroenke inviting the Spaniard to watch an NFL match between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Colorado Avalanche.
Aubameyang has an offer on the table from Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr and the Gunners were keen on him to take up the offer but the Gabon international wants to stay in Europe.
However, the European clubs that are interested in Aubameyang – such as AC Milan, Juventus and Marseille – all favour a loan deal and would require Arsenal to foot a significant portion of his £250,000-a-week wages.
Arteta therefore wanted to establish what his budget is, given Aubameyang’s situation will have a direct influence on how much he can spend.
