^ ^ Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich slammed by MP over Russia-Ukraine peace talks claim

Labour MP Chris Bryant has hit out at claims that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is trying to broker a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine.

Last week, Bryant called on the UK Government to seize the Russian-born billionaire’s assets, including Chelsea which he has owned since 2003, as part of its sanctions against Russia.

Over the weekend, Abramovich announced that he is giving up his ‘stewardship and care’ of Chelsea, although the day-to-day running of the club will remain unchanged.

It has now claimed that Abramovich is attempting to broker a peace deal following Russia’s invasion after Ukraine reached out to him via his Jewish contacts within the country.

‘I can confirm that Roman Abramovich was contacted by the Ukrainian side for support in achieving a peaceful resolution, and that he has been trying to help ever since,’ Abramovich’s spokesperson told the PA news agency.

‘Considering what is at stake, we would ask for your understanding as to why we have not commented on neither the situation as such nor his involvement.’

But Bryant has questioned how Abramovich could be of any influence in negotiations between the two nations if Chelsea’s owner is adamant that he is not closely connected to Vladimir Putin.

In response to the news, Bryant posted on Twitter: ‘This looks like another Russian lie in an attempt to avoid being sanctioned.

‘If he’s so close to Putin that he can wield such influence, if he’s visited Putin this last week, he should be sanctioned now.

‘Really? Doesn’t peace just mean Russia withdraws?’

Meanwhile, Ukrainian film producer Alexander Rodnyansky has revealed that Abramovich ‘has been trying to mobilise support’ for peace talks but says 55-year-old’s influence is ‘limited’.

‘I can confirm that the Ukrainian side have been trying to find someone in Russian willing to help them in finding a peaceful resolution,’ said Rodnyansky.

‘They are connected to Mr Abramovich through the Jewish community and reached out to him for help. Mr Abramovich has been trying to mobilise support for a peaceful resolution ever since.

‘Although Mr Abramovich’s influence is limited, he is the only one who responded and taken it upon himself to try.

‘If this will have an impact or not, I don’t know, but I am in contact with Zelensky’s staff myself, and know that they are grateful for his genuine efforts.’

^*^ Everton launch formal complaint following Manchester City VAR controversy

Everton have announced that they have launched a formal complaint against the FA following a VAR controversy that occurred in their 1-0 defeat to Everton.

Late in the second half, with the Toffees trailing by a goal, it seemed as though Rodri had handled the ball in his own box, leading to Everton demands for a penalty.

Frank Lampard was left speechless after the defeat, telling media outlets that ‘I’ve got a three-year-old daughter at home who could tell you that’s a penalty… It’s incompetence at best, if it’s not that, then someone needs to explain to me what it is.’

And as per Sky Sports:

‘The club are ‘absolutely incandescent’ at some of the refereeing decisions made in recent games and they are demanding at the very least an apology for manager Frank Lampard and his team.’

Too little, too late?

This news comes a fortnight after Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta revealed that he was planning on having a discussion with the Premier League board about some of the recent refereeing decisions against the Gunners.

More and more refereeing decisions are coming under scrutiny across the Premier League and English football more broadly, with discussions about potential right or wrong decisions even coming to the fore in the Carabao Cup final.

^*^ Revealed: Ralf Rangnick’s major reservations over Cristiano Ronaldo

An insight into Ralf Rangnick’s response to Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent troubles in front of goal has been provided.

The striker was brought back to Old Trafford during the summer. But at 36 (now 37), there were reservations over how smart a move that actually was on Manchester United’s part.

For many it was seen as more of a cheap publicity stunt and one that only happened so the Portuguese would not join United’s city rivals.

And, so far, the decision to bring Ronaldo back to Manchester United looks to have been a poor one.

The ageing forward has never been known for his work off the ball, but, if the goals are flowing, teams can make an exception for one top-quality star’s lack of pressing.

Ronaldo, though, is not working hard off the ball and is now also not scoring goals.

The former Real Madrid man has scored just one goal in his last 10 outings across all competitions and matched an unwanted personal record recently:

Ralf Rangnick’s Cristiano Ronaldo reservations

Now, as per the Manchester Evening News, it appears Ralf Rangnick does not believe Ronaldo is up to the job of leading the United line next term.

The MEN report that Rangnick has major reservations about the prospect of Cristiano Ronaldo spearheading Manchester United’s attack next season.

It is added that Rangnick’s patience is wearing thin with Ronaldo. But Rangnick has not entertained the possibility of dropping Ronaldo due to United’s dearth of reliable goalscorers at present.

All of this seems to point towards Manchester United needing a new no.9 in the summer. But given they probably needed one before Ronald signed, have they not just wasted a year on a club legend instead of going out and trying to sign a new forward like Harry Kane? It certainly seems that way.

^*^ Chelsea Shot-stopper implodes as Tottenham man impresses once more in Gameweek 27: Hot or not

Liverpool ended the weekend on a high, lifting the Carabao Cup for the 9th time in their history, just 24 hours before a late Phil Foden goal against rivals Everton prevented the title race from being blown wide open.

But who starred across the weekend, and who had a game to forget?

Hot: Harry Kane

For the second successive week, it is impossible not to include Harry Kane, who has now produced two stellar performances either side of a loss to Burnley where the forward was anonymous.

Against Leeds United, like against Manchester City six days previously, he was far from it.

Once more, the Englishman put on a clinic for a Tottenham side that desperately needs him, combining the roles of no.9 and no.10 and grabbing a goal and an assist in the process.

Beyond his goal contributions however, was his brilliant link-up play, sending long passes raking across the pitch countless times, some of which should have been capitalised on by his teammates.

Should Kane be able to stay fit and firing for the remainder of the season, then Tottenham can never be ruled out of the race for Champions League football next season.

Hot: Newcastle United

More of a pay to win than a plucky underdog story, Newcastle’s latest victory nonetheless made it four wins from five games, and left them unbeaten in the Premier League across their last five fixtures.

This has lifted the Magpies four points clear of the relegation zone, and drawn the likes of Everton and Brentford right back into the dogfight as they look to ensure that they are once again playing Premier League football next season.

Joelinton’s upturn has been perhaps the most impressive single component of Eddie Howe’s new system, with the Brazilian having taken to a new central midfield role instantly, and increasing his goal output as a result.

However, it has been a good few weeks for the entire club, and they are beginning to build some much needed momentum at St James Park.

Hot: West Ham

West Ham went into their clash with Wolves knowing that a loss would probably end their chances of making the top 4, and even harm their Europa League qualification hopes had they lost to Wolves, who sit just below them.

However, a 1-0 win over Bruno Lage’s side, their second defeat in 4 days to a top 4 rival, means that West Ham have increased their lead over the midlands side to five points, albeit having played a game more.

Moyes’ massive Irons march on.

Not: Kepa Arrizabalaga

The Kepa Arrizabalaga League Cup narrative came to a head in the most unfortunate fashion for the Spaniard. After refusing to be substituted in the same game in 2019, he was subbed on for the penalty shoot-out against Liverpool, following a brilliant performance from no.1 goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

However, Kepa failed to save any of the penalties from the Liverpool 11, before the Spaniard blazed his penalty over the bar to seal a record 9th Carabao Cup win for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Could this be the end of his Chelsea career?

Not: Marcelo Bielsa

It was another awful result for Leeds United, shipping 4 goals against Tottenham to take their tally for the week to 10, following their 6-0 drubbing at the hands of Liverpool. And it proved the end of the road for Marcelo Bielsa, who was sacked by the Yorkshire club on Sunday morning, leaving Leeds just above the relegation zone in the process.

It is a move that has split the fanbase, many of whom believed that Bielsa deserved more time at the helm to right the ship, and means that incoming boss Jesse Marsch will face an uphill battle at Elland Road.

Not: Manchester United

Every time that Manchester United look like they are back in the race for the top 4, they go and blow their chances all over again.

This time, it came at home to Watford, where they missed a host of chances to share a point with the Hornets, meaning that they still haven’t beaten them this season.

The result leaves them in 4th place on 47 points, but just two points ahead of Arsenal, who have played three games fewer. Tottenham, meanwhile, could also leapfrog the Red Devils should they win their games in hand, compounding the misery for Ralf Rangnick’s men.

^*^ Chris Wilder sees Antonio Conte parallels as Boro meet Spurs in FA Cup

  • Boro manager joked about tactical similarities at awards night
  • Wilder says beating Spurs would be ‘incredible achievement’

When Chris Wilder got chatting to Antonio Conte at a recent awards night, Middlesbrough’s manager jokingly accused the Italian of copying his tactical blueprint.

At his former club, Sheffield United, and, albeit to a lesser extent, on Teesside today, Wilder has built teams around attack-minded wing-backs and a trio of sometimes overlapping centre-halves. It is not a million miles removed from the system Conte swiftly installed at Tottenham, favoured utilising at previous clubs and, like his FA Cup fifth-round opponents on Tuesday night, seems philosophically attuned to.

Chelsea’s players took part in a show of support for the people of Ukraine prior to kick-off

Chelsea’s players joined with their Liverpool counterparts in showing support for Ukraine ahead of Sunday’s Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

The Champions League holders’ preparations prior to the first showpiece occasion of the season had been deiminated by the uncertainty surrounding Roman Abramovich’s future as the club’s owner.

The Russian ogliarch released a statement saying he is ‘giving trustees of Chelsea’s charitable foundation the stewardship and care’ of the club.

Bruce Buck and Marina Granovskai, Chelsea’s Russian director, were in attendance at Wembley

Abramovich, who will remain the club’s owner, made the decision amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

‘I have always taken decisions with the club’s best interest at heart,’ he said in a rare statement.

‘I remain committed to these values. That is why I am today giving trustees of Chelsea’s charitable Foundation the stewardship and care of Chelsea FC.

‘I believe that currently they are in the best position to look after the interests of the club, players, staff, and fans.’

Chelsea subsequently released a statement on Sunday morning which read: ‘The situation in Ukraine is horrific and devastating.

Chelsea FC’s thoughts are with everyone in Ukraine. Everyone at the club is praying for peace.’

Chelsea’s ties with Russia and Abramovich’s wealth, which has funded the most successful period in the club’s history, had led some to question whether they would actively show support for Ukraine ahead of Sunday’s match.

But as the teams lined up on the field ahead of the national anthem, both sets of players applauded as the 90,000 fans packed inside the stadium were encouraged to show their support by those affected by the ongoing war.

Speaking ahead of the game, Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel was asked to clarify whether Abramovich, given his links to Russia and the Putin-led regime, wanted to see peace in Ukraine.

He said: Absolutely, absolutely it includes him and it reflects my opinion like everybody else’s opinion and the club.

‘No, no we have not (been in touch) which is absolutely not unusual because I have a daily conversation with Petr Cech and a very regular conversation with Marina – they’re both in charge, both in charge of football and from my understanding they will stay in charge so that will not change a lot for me actually.

‘I did also not say it was difficult, it was just a distraction of course because we are aware, we’re watching news and people are concerned and, like we said, we are like also shocked of the situation in Ukraine.

‘So, this was more or less it but at the end approaching this final, big final, we allowed ourselves also to be sportsmen, to be football players and we allowed ourselves to focus on this match of football and to a certain degree enjoy it.

‘We know they are like much, much more important things out there than football and still we are here to play a match of football and this is what the players also deserve and spectators as well.’

^ ^ Liverpool star Thiago in tears after suffering injury in warm-up to face Chelsea

Thiago

Liverpool midfielder Thiago was left in tears on the touchline as he was forced to miss the Carabao Cup final after suffering an injury in the warm-up.

Thiago had been named in the starting XI to face Chelsea at Wembley but Jurgen Klopp was forced into a late change.

Naby Keita has now come into the side to face Chelsea while Harvey Elliott has been promoted to the bench.

As the two teams got underway, cameras cut to the 30-year-old in the dugout as he was consoled by team-mate Alisson.

It’s not known as of yet exactly what injury he picked up or how serious it could be.

‘Thiago Alcantara has been ruled out after sustaining an knock during the warm-up. Naby Keita replaces him,’ Liverpool confirmed ahead of kick-off.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher highlighted the significance of Thiago’s absence, insisting it was a huge blow to his former side’s chances.

‘With Thiago out, this is a 50-50 game,’ he said.

Klopp could now look to take advantage of the five substitutes rule being in place for the EFL Cup and has plenty of attacking options at his disposal.

Liverpool XI : Kelleher; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson, Fabinho, Keita; Salah, Mane, Diaz.

Subs: Alisson, Konate, Milner, Elliott, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Minamino, Jota, Tsimikas, Origi.

^ ^ Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel explains why Romelu Lukaku starts on the bench for Carabao Cup final

FBL-ENG-LCUP-CHELSEA-LIVERPOOL

Thomas Tuchel says he decided against starting Romelu Lukaku for Chelsea’s Carabao Cup final clash as he feels his side will need to ‘run behind the lines’ versus Liverpool.

Lukaku played the full 90 minutes of Chelsea’s 1-0 win away to Crystal Palace in the Premier League last weekend, but was an unused substitute on Tuesday night as the Champions League holders beat Lille at Stamford Bridge.

The Belgium centre-forward – Chelsea’s club-record signing – must settle for a place on the bench at Wembley, with Kai Havertz supported by Mason Mount and Christian Pulisic in attack.

Meanwhile, Tuchel has opted to start with first-choice goalkeeper Edouard Mendy between the sticks, despite Kepa Arrizabalaga starting every game for the Blues en route to the final.

On his decision to leave out Lukaku, Tuchel replied: ‘There is always a chance. If you look at the history he starts a lot of matches.

‘But today, for us, it is a bit more about running and running behind the lines.

‘Kai, Christian and Mason from a tactical point of view, and their characteristics and their style are a bit of a better fit.’

The Chelsea manager added: ‘It’s very nice to have Romelu from the bench to influence the game, hopefully in a decisive manner.’

Thiago Alcantara was named in Liverpool’s initial starting XI but had to be replaced after suffering an injury during warm-up.

The Spain international was later pictured in floods of tears as he watched on from Liverpool’s bench, with Jurgen Klopp starting Naby Keita in his place under the Wembley arch.

^ ^ Gary Neville slams ‘cowardly’ Roman Abramovich over Chelsea stewardship statement

Gary Neville has called Roman Abramovich ‘cowardly’ over his decision to pass on his ‘stewardship’ of Chelsea.

On Saturday, Abramovich delivered a surprise statement in which he announced that his ‘stewardship’ of the club to the trustees of the Chelsea’s charitable foundation.

Abramovich has constantly denied any link with Russia’s president Vladimir Putin but his statement comes just days after the UK Government announced a list of sanctions against Russian banks, oligarchs and companies.

The day-to-day running of Chelsea is expected to be unaffected by the change as Marina Granovskaia will remain in charge of the club’s football operations.

For the latest updates on the Russia-Ukraine war, visit our live blog: Russia-Ukraine live

And Neville has accused Abramovich of trying to ‘con’ people by suggesting that he is handing over control of Chelsea.

‘Maybe myself and most others who saw that statement thought, ‘oh, this is a noble gesture, it’s the right thing to do’… when you look at who the trustees are, Emma Hayes the Chelsea women’s manager, Piara Powar who set-up Kick It Out, John Devine [sports lawyer], it’s quite clear they’re not going to be running Chelsea Football Club,’ Neville told Sky Sports.

Roman Abramovich celebrated with Chelsea's Club World Cup trophy earlier this month

‘One of the smartest things I think that Roman Abramovich has done over the last 20 years is not speak, not make statements because the statement that he made last night left more questions than answers.

‘In fact, if anything, it was cowardly approach to throw a hospital pass to good people on the foundation board when it’s quite clear he runs the football club with Marina [Granovskaia] and Petr Cech.

‘These owners from the top-six clubs are insulated from reality. They think they can put a smart PR team around them and con us with fancy words but unfortunately it doesn’t work.

‘There’s no way that the charitable foundation of Chelsea are running the club, and I’m not quite sure why Roman Abramovich made that statement.

‘If he wanted to make a statement of any note it would’ve been whether he supports the war in Ukraine or he doesn’t support the war in Ukraine.’

^*^ Video: Alisson consoles tearful Thiago Alcantara after League Cup final blow

Footage of Liverpool shot-stopper Alisson Becker consoling teammate Thiago Alcantara on the sideline has gone viral on Sunday evening.

The clip in question comes on the back of the latest in a lengthy string of injury setbacks on the part of Liverpool’s maestro in the middle of the park.

Jurgen Klopp’s troops have of course returned to action this evening, eyeing up a first piece of silverware of the campaign in a Carabao Cup finale showdown with European champions Chelsea.

Thiago, meanwhile, was initially, as expected, included in the Reds’ starting XI.

Just minutes before kick-off in the English capital, however, word was forthcoming that the Spaniard had in fact been pulled from his starting role, owing to an injury picked up whilst warming up:

And, evidently, his latest fitness blow hit Thiago hard, with footage to have since made its way online showcasing the former Bayern Munich man in tears on the touchline, as teammate Alisson does his best to console the midfielder:

Pulisic goes close

Turning attentions towards the action at Wembley itself, early in the first-half, the scoreline remains locked at 0-0.

Both sides, though, have already carved out clear-cut opportunities, with Christian Pulisic having seen what looked a certain opener from close range superbly kept out by Caoimhin Kelleher, before Sadio Mane failed to capitalise on a trademark Trent Alexander-Arnold delivery at the other end.

Liverpool were forced into a late change to their starting line-up for this afternoon's Carabao Cup final, with Thiago Alcantara injured in the warm-up. The Spaniard has been replaced by Naby Keita.

^ ^ ‘I admire Jurgen Klopp’ – Harry Redknapp praises bold Liverpool starting XI decision for Chelsea clash

Harry Redknapp says he admires Jurgen Klopp showing faith in No.2 Caoimhin Kelleher by starting him in the Carabao Cup final.

No.1 Alisson is on the bench for Liverpool for today’s showpiece event at Wembley against Chelsea, having played just once in the EFL Cup this season.

It’s a bold call from Klopp to leave his No.1 out of the starting line-up with a trophy on the line but former Premier League manager Redknapp can relate to the German’s predicament.

‘I do admire Jurgen for having such faith in Caoimhin Kelleher, the young goalkeeper he says he’ll stick with for the final,’ he told The Sun.

‘I did the same with my No 2 keeper at Tottenham, Carlo Cudicini, in the 2012 FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea.

‘I left first-choice Brad Friedel on the bench, as I had done all the way through.

Kelleher

‘But you are leaving yourself open if the result goes against you, like it did for Spurs when we got well beaten. None of them were Carlo’s fault, but that didn’t stop me from getting loads of criticism, so that’s the risk.

‘It doesn’t mean Klopp isn’t taking it seriously either, because I know how much he wants to win this — in fact these are two managers who want to win everything they’re in.

‘I get fed up of seeing teams halfway up the table putting out reserve sides in the cup competitions, so fair play to this pair.’

As for Chelsea, Thomas Tuchel has opted to go with his No.1 Edouard Mendy over Kepa Arrizabalaga.

In the build up to today’s match, Tuchel admitted the Spaniard deserved to start but has since gone with Mendy.

‘This is very easy to say – Kepa absolutely deserves to play and I also cannot get sentimental about it,’ he said. ‘I have to do what in the end is, in my opinion, the very best solution for the team.

‘I know that this position is a very sensitive position. If Kepa was a player in the other 10 positions we would not have these discussions, we would just be full of praise and he would feel that praise in minutes on the pitch.’

Phillipe Coutinho left Liverpool to join Barcelona in 2018

Philippe Coutinho insists he doesn’t regret leaving Liverpool in 2018 despite flopping at Barcelona.

Coutinho quickly established himself as a firm fans’ favourite at Anfield, scoring 54 goals and making 43 assists in 201 appearances in all competitions.

But the Brazilian decided to leave Liverpool four years ago and complete a dream move to Barcelona in a deal worth more than £100m.

Much was expected of Coutinho when he arrived at the Nou Camp but the 29-year-old struggled in Spain, scoring just 26 goals in 106 matches.

Barcelona offloaded Coutinho last month, with the Brazil international joining his former Liverpool team-mate Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa.

Reflecting on his decision to leave Liverpool, Coutinho told ESPN: ‘At certain times we have to make decisions and one of my big dreams was to play for Barcelona.

‘At that moment I decided to make that decision, but always with great affection, respect and gratitude for Liverpool and for the friendships over the years I’ve been in the club.

Coutinho developed into one of the best players in the world at Anfield

‘But at that moment I had a decision to make and I don’t regret it.’

Coutinho has made a bright start to his spell at Villa Park, scoring two goals and making two assists in five Premier League games.

On working with former England midfielder Gerrard, Coutinho said: ‘I always admired him a lot. For me, it was an honour to have played with him.

‘Now having him as a coach, with the experience he has, training has been strong and demanding.

‘He has big ambitions, I’m happy to be here and I hope to respond to what he expects by helping our team to achieve our goals.

‘For me, it was an honour to be part of his career as a player, and now, as a coach, I feel even more honoured.’

^*^ Why Dominic Calvert-Lewin is absent for Everton vs Man City

An explanation for the absence of Dominic Calvert-Lewin from the Everton squad to take on Manchester City this evening has been provided.

And, in a blow for all associated with the Toffees, it has been confirmed that DCL has picked up a fresh injury problem.

Speaking ahead of the action getting underway on Merseyside in short order, Frank Lampard was inevitably drawn on the whereabouts of his star striker, amid a season to forget to date.

And the Everton boss went on to reveal that Calvert-Lewin has suffered an ‘adductor injury’, which is expected to keep him sidelined for the coming week, and potentially beyond:

Key clash at both ends

News of the latest blow to their personnel ranks of course couldn’t come at a worse time for Everton.

This comes with the Blues, in the midst of a tense battle against relegation from the Premier League, set to face off against the might of champions Manchester City on Saturday.

Pep Guardiola’s Citizens, currently sitting pretty atop the English top-flight, will too be eyeing a bounce-back result at Goodison Park, after slipping to just a 3rd league defeat of the term at the hands of Tottenham last time out.

Everton, on the other hand, are no doubt aware that a loss of their own on Saturday would leave them perilously close to the drop, just a point clear of 18th-placed Burnley.

^*^ Video: Emotional scenes at Brentford as Christian Eriksen marks return to the pitch

A heartwarming scene played out during the Premier League meeting between Brentford and Newcastle United this afternoon, as Christian Eriksen marked his long-awaited return to the pitch.

Danish international Eriksen was of course afforded a 2nd chance at the top level of football last month, when Thomas Frank’s Brentford opted to bring the midfield conductor in as a free agent.

This comes after Eriksen, owing to Serie A’s rules surrounding players being fitted with cardioverter-defibrillators, was released by Inter Milan on the back of his frightening cardiac arrest at last summer’s European Championships.

The 29-year-old had since spent time building up match fitness in friendly outings with Brentford over the course of the last week, impressing to the tune of a trio of assists across two outings.

In turn, he was afforded a spot on the Bees’ bench for their Premier League meeting with Newcastle United this afternoon.

And, as alluded to above, a short time ago, the moment fans across the globe had been waiting for was finally forthcoming.

This came as Eriksen, early in the 2nd-half of action at the Brentford Community Stadium, was introduced to the fray in place of Mathias Jensen, sparking a deserved standing ovation on the part of fans, staff and players alike:

Many others, meanwhile, have since taken to social media, to reveal their delight for the former Tottenham standout:

Bees set for drop?

Eriksen’s return aside, though, it has proven an otherwise miserable afternoon for Brentford on Saturday thus far.

Thomas Frank’s men, amid an alarming dip in form of late, currently trail fellow relegation candidates Newcastle by two goals to nil, owing to strikes on the part of Joelinton and Joe Willock.

Should the scoreline remain the same through the final whistle in west London, the day’s hosts, in turn, will slip below Newcastle in the Premier League table, just three points clear of the drop zone.

^*^ Harry Kane & Heung-min Son broke a long-standing PL record held by two Chelsea legends vs Leeds

Tottenham duo Harry Kane and Heung-min Son became the new owners of a Premier League record on Saturday, owing to their exploits in the club’s meeting with Leeds United.

Antonio Conte’s troops of course returned to action a short time ago.

On the back of an alarming stretch of four league defeats from five, the Lilywhites made the trip to Elland Road, hoping to get things back on track courtesy of a 3-point haul versus Marcelo Bielsa’s faltering Leeds

And, when all was said and done in west Yorkshire, to their credit, return to winning ways is precisely what Spurs managed, in style.

A dominant display ultimately culminated in the north Londoners emerging on the right side of a 4-0 scoreline, to climb back within four points of the Premier League’s top-4.

Matt Doherty was the man to open the afternoon’s scoring at Elland Road, before all of Dejan Kulusevski, Harry Kane and Heung-min Son too got in on the act, to round out a fine day’s work for Conte’s troops:

Chelsea legends surpassed

As alluded to above, though, one of the four goals racked up by Spurs on Saturday proved of particular significance when it comes to the Premier League’s history books.

This came in the form of the visitors’ 4th, as Harry Kane laid on attacking partner in crime Heung-min Son:

In the process, Tottenham’s long-time star pair secured for themselves sole ownership of the record for most goals ever combined for in the Premier League, breaking their tie with another pair of London-based icons, in the form of Chelsea pair Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba:

^*^ Everton v Manchester City: Premier League – live!

A heartwarming, if extremely bittersweet, moment during the warm-up, as the Ukrainian pair Vitalii Mykolenko of Everton and City’s Oleksandr Zinchenko embrace each other with great feeling. Some things on their mind bigger than football. Everton normally sound an air-raid klaxon before playing the Z-Cars theme during the build-up at Goodison, but they’re expected to silence that this evening as a measure of respect. Here’s to peace and love.

On this subject, here’s the latest edition of our ongoing series Pre-Match Optimism: The Everton Way. “They say that any Premier League team has a chance to win against everyone,” begins Mary Waltz. “As an Everton fan I would love to believe that. The reality is: Everton v City = Cow v Abattoir.”

The Swedish Football Association have joined Poland in boycotting a potential World Cup qualification play-off match against Russia next month following the invasion of Ukraine.

Poland were due to travel to Moscow on March 24 for their play-off semi-final, while the winner of that contest would then host either Sweden or the Czech Republic a few days later.

But the three teams who were facing the possibility of playing in Moscow all wrote to FIFA in a joint letter asking for the match to be moved to a neutral venue, though received no response.

On Saturday morning, Poland took matters into their own hands and said they would not play against Russia irrespective of the where the match took place.

The Polish FA also called on Sweden and Czech Republic to follow suit, and the former – after consulting their players – have now joined the boycott.

Swedish FA chairman Karl-Erik Nilsson said on Saturday afternoon: ‘The illegal and deeply unjust invasion of Ukraine currently makes all football exchanges with Russia impossible.

‘We therefore urge FIFA to decide that the playoff matches in March in which Russia participates will be cancelled. But regardless of what FIFA chooses to do, we will not play against Russia in March.’

Nilsson added: ‘We have a hard time believing that FIFA will not follow our call. Russia cannot join in as long as this madness continues.’

Earlier in the day, Cezary Kulesza, the head of the Polish FA, tweeted: ‘No more words, time to act!

‘Due to the escalation of the aggression of the Russian Federation towards Ukraine, the Polish national team does not intend to play the play-off match against Russia.

‘This is the only right decision. We are in talks with the federations of Sweden and the Czech Republic to bring forward a common position to FIFA.’

Poland’s players also shared a joint message on social media which read: ‘We, the players of the Polish national team, together with the Polish FA, decided that as a result of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, we do not intend to play in the play-off match against Russia.

‘It is not an easy decision, but there are more important things in life than football. Our thoughts are with the Ukrainian nation and our friend from the national team, Tomasz Kedziora, who is still in Kyiv with his family.’

FIFA have yet to provide feedback to the three clubs following their letter, with the governing body’s president Gianni Infantino saying on Thursday: ‘We continue to monitor the situation. We will update on the World Cup qualifiers soon. We can take decisions immediately as soon as it’s needed.’

^*^ The latest odds on the Premier League’s top-4 race after Arsenal’s win over Wolves

Updates odds on the race for Champions League football in the Premier League have come to the fore on Friday, and spell altogether encouraging news for Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.

The latest development in the English top-flight’s top-4 race was of course forthcoming on Thursday night.

On the back of successive downings of Wolves and Brentford, Arsenal welcomed the former back to north London, aware that a three-point haul would see them close to within a point of 4th-placed Manchester United.

And, when all was said and done at the Emirates, emerge triumphant is precisely what the Gunners managed, owing to late strikes on the part of Nicolas Pepe and, deep into injury time, Alexandre Lacazette:

In turn, as alluded to above, Arsenal have clinched sole possession of 5th in the Premier League, clear of all of West Ham United, Wolves and, crucially, north London rivals Tottenham.

And, if the latest odds to have come to the fore across the United Kingdom’s bookmakers on Friday are anything to go by, then their latest victory means that the Gunners should now be viewed as outright favourites to clinch the final of England’s top-4 spots come the season’s end.

This comes with Arteta’s troops boasting not one, but two games in hand on Manchester United.

Not only that, but should they emerge victorious from the club’s solitary game in hand over Chelsea, Arsenal will move to within just two points of their capital rivals in 3rd.

As a result, the north London giants sit at evens to finish in the top-4, ahead of Manchester United, Tottenham, West Ham and Wolves, in that order:

^*^ Frank Lampard confirms double Everton injury boost before Man City

Everton boss Frank Lampard has, on Friday afternoon, provided an injury update on his squad, ahead of the club’s meeting with Manchester City.

First on the agenda was the latest on defender Ben Godfrey, forced onto the treatment table on Merseyside earlier this month owing to a hamstring injury.

Lampard, however, confirmed that Godfrey remains some way off a return to the pitch, in explaining:

”Ben Godfrey won’t be back; he’s still a couple of weeks away. He’s progressing well but it was always going to be a five-week injury.”

From here, attentions turned towards fellow absentees of late, Demarai Gray and Abdoulaye Doucoure.

And, in a boost for all associated with the club, the news regarding the two key Toffees stars proved of an altogether more positive nature, with both set to be involved in Lampard’s matchday squad in some capacity.

”Doucoure and Gray they’re both training with us and in the squad”, the Everton boss confirmed. ”Whether they start is an issue for me.”

Relegation concerns mount

Everton, of course, will be desperate to carve out a positive result for themselves on Saturday, amid the club’s ongoing efforts to stave off what would be a shock relegation to the Championship.

As things stand, the Blues sit just two points clear of 18th-placed Burnley, and could therefore slip into the drop zone depending on results elsewhere over the course of the weekend.

To say that actually securing a three-point haul up against the might of Manchester City will be easier said than done, though, is putting it lightly, with Pep Guardiola’s champions eyeing a bounce-back result after slipping to just a 3rd defeat of the campaign at the hands of Tottenham last time out.

^*^ Everton v Manchester City: match preview

Two teams meet in urgent need of maximum points but for entirely different reasons. With their 15-game unbeaten run in the Premier League halted last weekend and Liverpool reducing a 12-point gap to three, while establishing a superior goal difference in the process, Manchester City suddenly find themselves under pressure at the top. Another winning streak may be required to keep the challengers at bay. Frank Lampard has enjoyed two stirring home wins out of two so far but two anaemic away defeats, plus the improved form of Newcastle and Burnley, have kept Everton firmly in the relegation mire.
